As Sure As The Sun (Blog Entry by youdiejoe)

kronosposeidon says...

Very nice. A number of years ago I read an article in the New Yorker (ironically) about the specific set of atmospheric conditions present in southern California that gives the evening sky there its unique, beautiful coloring. I tried looking for the article at newyorker.com, but unfortunately I was unable to locate it. Nonetheless I believe the article was spot on, because I still remember being mesmerized by it during my one and only visit to L.A. in 1983. I've been all over the US, and yet the SoCal sunset is still the most beautiful I've seen. Too bad about the goddamn smog though. I remember that too.

2 British police officers get pwned by cameraman

poolcleaner says...

Want to trade Southern California accent for British. Am willing to itemize, for instance I will trade my "dude" for your "mate".

I've seen far worse in the States. Bored Huntington Beach officers or the Irvine hired hoodlums driving around in "Collision Investigation" vans, snatching up the homeless then dropping them off in Santa Ana, where all the other "scum" belong. Fuck's sake, I don't know that there's ever been a time when the police in any country didn't make up the rules as they go and get away with their bullshit coupled with amoral city codes.

sure it can - you just have to break it first.

#65 A one-day weather forecast requires about 10 billion math calculations

Wrong. I live in southern california, and it requires only one. What day is it? Today? I predict sunshine.

#78 Alaska is the most eastern and western state in the US

so is every other state.

#89 The average American walks 18,000 steps a day

Somebody is walking a ridiculous amount to make up for me.

#94 Lizards communicate by doing push-ups

This is also the funniest known form of communication.

#95 Squids can have eyeballs the size of volleyballs

except, of course, those squid which are smaller than volleyballs.

#102 A one-minute kiss burns 26 calories

That's some weak kissing.

#118 Honeybees are the only insects that create a form of food for humans

Wrong - cows create beef. And, of course, pigs create pork, lambs create veal, deer create venison, etc.

hey - I was watching lavoll's post and it reminded me of a ridiculously bright object I saw in the sky about 2 or 3 weeks ago. It only just occurred to me to ask our resident astronomer if there were any planets particularly close to Earth around then. It was in the westsouthwest (as viewed from southern california) and was at it's brightest around 7pm(?) PST. I'm an occasional sky watcher, but don't know nearly enough about schedules and whatnot to know what it was. I would have thought that Venus would be the only object that could be nearly that bright, but the color didn't seem right, and even so it was way bigger/brighter than I've ever seen Venus.

Any info? Should I start building a bunker?

Good Bye Indie 103.1 (Blog Entry by gourmetemu)

rottenseed says...

We do have a major problem with radio here in Southern California. All the good stuff isn't trendy enough to stick around. Only the corporate giants have enough presence to be able to shove what's "good" down your throat. On top of that, they have to sneak dance music in at the wee hours. I've given up all hope for some entertainment over the radio. I'm sorry to hear about your loss. Whenever you start getting homesick for Chicago, remember it's like fucking -30 degrees there right now.

Sadly, this isn't the first time 103.1 and closure have been in the same sentence. This has the be the most contested/flopped station on the dial, having been flopped a good number of times in the last 15 years. Going from memory:

MARS FM (Dance/Techno, never knew it existed until Groove was on the air and mentioned it)

CD 103.1 (Adult Contemporary)

Groove Radio (Dance/Techno, possibly the first time I really loved a station format. But it wasn't until KDL that I was into dance/electronic music)

Super Estrella (Spanish Music. Entravision owned KDLE and KDLD at the time)

KDL 103.1 (LOVED the station. Dance/Techno. Rico Banana has yet to be topped in morning radio IMHO. Used both KDLE KDLD sticks/call signs)

Independent Radio (ClearChannel <read: assholes> bought KDL, fired staff, set up station to specifically compete with KROQ. They had to ditch/sell when the FCC complained they had too much of a monopoly in Southern California)

Indie 103.1 (What became of the above after ClearChannel left. Listened in a few times, but admittedly never was a fan because of the bad taste ClearChannel left me at the killing of KDL)

And now, like before, 103.1 is a Spanish station. To shorten the drama, I pray to ever god that has ever been worshiped that it stays like that. Miss dance stations, but can't for the life of me want to go through more pain/drama.

[Edit] Something to add to the story at this point: I remember the actual shutoff of KDL and the starting of Independent because I actually held a vigil, staying up until midnight and having a shot of Cuervo in memory of the fine station. Really left me bitter about ClearChannel.

Tomorrow's weather forcast is sunny and 76 degrees!
So, I will volunteer to arrive at the Lion a bit early and get a huge table upstairs in the biergarten/patio for the lot of us, and warn the staff about the impending monkey invasion.

Ok, you do that and I will bring this as a place setting. I've been meaning to take a picture and post this. I was found by me while moving my parents last June. I took it (it would have been thrown away otherwise) for this very purpose (a meet-up)

Hmmm...list me as doubtful to questionable. Ironically I have a date in the vicinity but something tells me that "Hey wanna meet my internet friends?" would not go over as well as I would hope.

If your date doesn't appreciate the Sift, it's not worth pursuing.

( Unless s/he's hot)

Lol...hot enough. But we will see. Plus who says I cant get toasty before?
