FOX News Host Not Happy With GI Joe Movie's Internationalism

thepinky says...

>> ^campionidelmondo:
I think Transformers was about space robots defeating other space robots.

Yes. Robots aided by Americans. I also seem to recall our FBI or CIA or something being involved, as well as our military. Some scenes took place on Air Force One...

As for the other movies, they're all pre-Bush. The international perception of american patriotism has taken a turn for the worse thanks to Dubya.

Ah, people can still handle American patriotism. The hatred isn't as intense or as widespread as some people seem to think. Of course it's there, but not to the point where G.I. Joe would be largely unwelcome. I don't know for sure, of course, but because I'm an ESL tutor at my university, I know many international students (South Korean, Mexican, Canadian, British, German, Vietnamese, Haitian, Bulgarian, South African, Romanian, and more). I've also had a Mexican roommate and a Canadian roommate. I've talked to several of these close friends about the international opinion of the U.S. (not just their own opinions), and it doesn't seem all THAT bleak. I'm not basing my opinion solely on this, but it helps.

Also, while some movies might seem very american to you, they sell well abroad because they have an easily relateable theme. Matrix told the story of man vs. machine, Independence Day man vs. aliens, Armageddon man vs. giant rock etc...

Don't be silly. Almost ALL movies have an easily relatable theme. My point is that all of these movies happen to feature American Man vs. Global Threat. What is more annoyingly ethnocentric and American than that?

25% of South African men are rapists

gorillaman says...

>> ^Jaace:
What's the percentage of rapists in America, I wonder?

≥25%

What the video illustrates is that at least 25% of all men and women IN THE WORLD are perfectly happy to go around raping people under the right circumstances. Just think about this the next time you vote.

lesbians subjected to corrective rape

steampunks says...

as a south african, this is a horrible to admit but this is _NOT_ a misrepresentation of african culture. sure it may not be an universal opinion but considering our high rape rate here (1 in 4 women can expect to be raped) I actually find it quite insulting that you guys are comparing this to 'prison rape' or say this claim is racist.

let me fill you in, you have several 'traditional' cultures for whom it's a 'right' to sleep with a women. they are 'supposed' to be raped if they refuse, irrespective of their being lesbian or not. t

his isn't a south african thing tho. it's a 'african' traditionalist culture thing. not a result of 'white' vs 'black' this is just how it's been and what is done , since the time of shaka zulu. (read up on traditional zulu culture , you'll wanna throw up at points and at other's you'll be dreaming of the the nobal savage)

there is a culture "war" that is going on at the moment here.. 'modern' 'westernised' african culture vs. 'traditionalist' culture.

traditionalism is winning just look at who president zuma is , what is attiude is to aids and women. hell, he literally said in court in _HIS_ rape "case" that 'when a women is wares a skirt' she's asking for it. she has no right to deny a man.
and this man is an apartheit war hero , viva le revolution..

i bet i can do someting very few of you can do .. name 6 women in my imidiate every day enviroment that have been raped/gang raped for the sake of raping , no 'justice' no legal recourse ... nothing .. because the cops are way too closely tied to the communities and because they are just as tradtitionalist as the government pretends not to be. no evidence, it goes missing, no treatment because the community clinics think you 'deserved' it. hell, you ever wonder why aids is so high here???

the 2010 viva world cup is going to be truely interesting , i wonder how many of your women are going to be raped and what excuses will be used to explain it away. (american / eurpeans)

Asmo, I reject your racist characterization of black South Africans. You sound just like the fools on the video talking about lesbians.

The problem I have with this video is the same I have with any that goes out and cherry picks responses. Four or five guys living in the most ignorant and destitute parts of South Africa are supposed to represent all the men.

Give me a break.

I have to say that I could go out to a pristine suburb of America, wait around after church services, and find 5 well-dressed white men who would tender the same sentiments about lesbians.

Has rape been eradicated in the West? If so, I must not have gotten the news. There is even a prevalent rape problem with the US military and contractors in Iraq; in fact, it is not rare to hear cases of our some of our male troops raping their female counterparts. Does this condemn the whole army or all male troops? Of course not. Does the high incidence of date rape condemn all american male college students. Again, of course not.

I condemn what happened to these women; I am wary of replacing one hate for another.

Uncut Interview with Ian McEwan - Root of All Evil?

griefer_queafer says...

Ummm... well, again we have Europeans/south Africans presuming to know what its like in America, and of course, again, they are wrong. I have lived all around this country, and I don't agree that to be an atheist is somehow an eccentricity. Maybe within the general context of the "culture wars" and its invasive maneuverings amongst the political sphere, this is true, but not so in the private-to-public EVERYDAY life of most Americans. My father was a baptist minister in the deep south for ten years, and I remember, as his son, being quite openly uninterested in the goings-on of the parish. Everyone assumed I was an atheist, though I never said so outright. They never gave me or my family any trouble about it. That's an extreme example, of course, but it is also true, at least for me, on a more general level.

I actually think a lot of this misconception about how America really is a fundamentally religious country comes from the foreign media (and ours) projecting that image around the world. Its really easy, and makes America a fun and simple target. Too bad people so seldom want to lend complicated issues such as this one their due thought.

Female Circumcision from the POV of women...

Bidouleroux says...

>> ^peggedbea:
the turning point came when i had to do a bladder study on 2 boys 2 weeks in a row, both were under 7, both had not been circumsized and both had chronic bladder and kidney infections. when i went to cath both of them their foreskins were filthy and crusted on, i dont think their parents have EVER pulled that stuff back and cleaned it properly.

WTF, are you an idiot? This only shows the mental damage American society (or whatever society you're in) has had from years of unwarranted circumcision : bad genital hygiene. The Chinese/Japanese/Indian/Latino-American/European are for the majority uncircumcised and lo, they wash their foreskin and don't get any more infections than the circumcised. And why would what other parents can't do influence your choice? Because they're so dumb they can't wash their child's foreskin you're going to lower yourself to their level and not wash your child's foreskin too? What if they jumped off a bridge, would you jump off too?

The generalized correct reasoning here is this: don't wash foreskin = infection. Wash foreskin = no infection. Everything else is pure bullshit (because as we all know bovine feces is sterile).

i interviewed all my male friends both circumsized and uncircumsized, and one friend that had not been circumsized as a baby, but chose to be later on in life, everyone says circumsicion. so we did it.

And so you're a hypocrite and a sheeple. Not surprising coming from an idiot. Ask a Sunni if Shiites are bad, of course he'll say yes. Ask an evangelical church-goer if atheists are bad, of course he'll say yes. It still doesn't mean their opinion has any value outside of their little micro-society.

he was 6 hours old, they numbed him and gave him a chocolate sucker to suck on. nowadays they circumsize babies by putting this plastic bell over their penis, it cuts off circulation to the foreskin and it falls off in about a week. we had no problems and he doesnt seem to miss it and i dont feel bad about it now.

Glad the experience didn't give you PTSD.

foreskins have been shown to carry disease and a contributing factor the aids epidemic in africa, but still as nature intended.

False, false, false, and you're an idiot. The "study" that "proved" a "link" between foreskin and AIDS was a "study" that looked at the prevalence of AIDS vs the prevalence of circumcision, and ONLY in some regions of South Africa. More that 30% of South Africans have HIV. Correlation is NOT causation, not even link. Do some statistics: you'll be scared by how easy it is to find correlations between non random normally distributed sets, which includes nearly everything that has to do with human life.

its also interesting since ive grown up in a culture of male circumsicion, im intimidated by foreskins and prefer that stuff cut off if im gonna have sex with it, all my female friends feel the same way.

Yes it's interesting, but not the way you think it is. It's interesting in the same way the neurotic women Freud psychoanalyzed were interesting : they were mentally ill.

how do the men feel about their foreskins, or lack there of?

Coming from a now mostly circumcision free society, we do not feel much of anything about our foreskins unless they give us trouble, like any other part of our body.

also, to this day the smell of chocolate dumdums reminds me of the day my son was born.

Proof of your neurosis? You tell me.

Finally, I think the Ancient Greeks had it right : a man is not naked until his foreskin is fully retracted. Maybe circumcision is why so many Americans are still so prudish regarding nudity?

Everything about this video was pretty hilarious and dead on. You could tell he was having a hard time finding things to bicker about, but really, that's because anyone who's played either GoW knows what to expect of the sequel. Yahtzee said it perfectly- the developers played it safe because of the crowd that the game attracts are fine with that. Anything experimental would've blown up in their face, and with something so mainstream, you really don't want to take the gamble.

On the comedy side, it was pretty funny. I agree with the previous comments, "It was supposed to be a South African accent, ok?" was the funniest part. I guess we weren't the only ones confused by two accents at the same time.

I liked the mods vs rockers reference. Yeah his accent was a bad attempt at the South African accent that is all over the game. It's fine for Brits like me but I guess if you're not used to fluent Brit, trying to understand someone with a British accent butchering a South African accent is just too many weird sounds going on at once, especially as he drops in and out of the South African accent all over the place. Anyway, I'm off to watch Blood Diamond on Blu-ray - I'm sure it's pretty much like Far Cry 2, right? )

I guess that was the idea - crazy-ass inconsistent accent-game => same in review.

Especially since he's an Australian living in England trying to do a South African accent.

Wait! I thought he was an English dude living in Australia?

You know what he meant!
