When You Finally Hear The Lyrics

newtboy says...

So much more than a little creepy…he looks closer to 40 than 14! Born in 46, song was in 1980! The video is clear how inappropriate it is!

How in the hell was this not just OK but a hit song in 1980!?!

Makes perfect sense if written by a 13 or 14 yr old boy.

Otherwise, it's a little creepy.

I guess you didn’t read…when he finally put out a personal statement, it was mostly about how upset he was at the right co-opting his song because wrote it about them.

The audience however heard every dog whistle, and when they found out he wasn’t racist and was singing about right wing politicians not Biden they dropped him like a hot potato. I’m afraid you are wrong again, the right definitely heard those dog whistles and are pissed he didn’t intend them.

Easy…when he said he thinks diversity is a strength of America, nearly half his right wing audience said “I’m out” and “try saying that in a small town” and no longer call themselves fans…because they’re racist and thought he was too. You can find thousands in the comments sections where his videos were posted before he spoke out. Here’s 8-10…Just read some…
https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/technology/viral-sensation-oliver-anthony-called-a-sellout-for-relatively-benign-“diversity”-comment-he-mad

I’m afraid it’s just know nothing people who latched onto what they heard as a racist anti welfare, conservative song who suddenly ran for the hills when they realized it and he were in fact anti conservative that suddenly hate this song. I admit I listened to it through “conservative ears” (since it was billed as the new conservative anthem) and I also heard every dog whistle they did, meaning it’s a really poorly worded song since so many got its message completely wrong. Even the Republican debate used it, which he found hilarious since the candidates were exactly who he wrote it about…but they were clueless about the irony.

He should have taken the $8 million, he’s going to fade into obscurity without the political backing he was getting.

So let me ask, now knowing he was talking about conservative politicians not liberals, and knowing he believes in diversity not tribalism…are you still a fan? (I know, you don’t/can’t answer questions). I’m not, despite learning all we now know about his intended message…but I retract my accusation that he MEANT it to be racist or hyper conservative.
Yes, I was w-w-w-wrong about HIM, but not his audience or the message they heard. Not the first or last time, but I can admit it when I’m wrong.

You ever think that you are totally wrong on this .

Not racist, Not Anti American, Not MEGA.

Perhaps you are hearing another "dog whistle". Odd thing is that only democrats hear these dog whistles.

People are tired of being screwed and not listen to by their government.

If racist as you say fined a non media reaction to this that indicates so. Find 3

Perhaps its know it all people like you who want to divide people, who want to keep poor people down just for their vote.

Derp….because they created them. Most I found are professional “conservative blacks” (like Diamond and Silk) hyping the video with fake “reaction videos”. You can find plenty of videos of the same people trashing BLM and defending conservatives and Jan 6….some are people who put out (seemingly nothing but) positive reaction videos.

This is being astroturfed to the extreme, much like “Sound of Freedom” was (it was playing to sold out theaters with absolutely no one watching it)… promoted by conservative influencers and politicians, overhyped to the extreme. It’s what the right does, you create this fake popularism then point to it and say nonsense like “Americans and 100% behind this song” to make yourself feel less alone in your views. How’s that been working for you?

Try to find negative reaction videos to any song, it’s hard no matter how bad the song is, positive reaction videos get views, negative reaction videos get discarded. I looked through all the videos made by those you posted, not one song any of them disliked. I’ve actually never seen a reaction video where the listener didn’t LOVE the song they’re pretending to hear for the first time, and I’ve seen plenty.

Best reaction yet….
“Boss gets a dollar
While I get a dime
Please cut his taxes
And deregulate mines”. Says it all for me.

I’ve not heard a thing about this on media before you posted it, I had to look it up myself…as usual. I don’t get my information from “the media”, I get it from researching multiple conflicting sources, and using my brain.

Really, you think Americans are 100% behind ANYTHING?!? Just more proof how delusional you are. You think Americans are 100% behind Trump too. 😂

Elites. Lol. No, son. Lots of people, including many conservatives dislike the message of this song, they are replying “if you don’t get paid enough, get a better job, there’s plenty of opportunity…stop drinking and whining.”.
Liberals dislike the fat shaming and tax blaming while letting the 1% off the hook for screwing the workers hard and deep.

1%ers….you have no clue what you say, do you? Let’s see…who are the 1%ers bob? Am I one? Are 45% of the country 1%ers? 😂

As a stand alone song, it’s nothing special, not great not terrible, probably would have gotten 5-10000 views in a year and never gone anywhere…but as the new conservative anthem hyped by all conservatives ad nauseam, it’s gawd awful.

You being feed lies and BS from the media you watch. Americans and 100% behind this song.

Only the left elites are against it. You know the 1%ers

Oops…did I trigger someone with my opinion? I didn’t know my opinion means so much to you. 😂
god forbid someone doesn’t love your new anti tax anti assistance “where’s my assistance?” fat people fat shaming fat people MAGA anthem.

I just looked up who he is, a drunkard and high school drop out now complaining he’s not very successful, and looked at the crowd, 99.99% white MAGgots, and read the lyrics, which are easy to read/hear as racist, pro-incel, and anti government, blaming politicians for his low wages not his boss…blaming taxes for his lack of cash, not the $7 a hour minimum wage.

If he’s so popular among minorities as you claim, why were they not present at his concert? Are just his fans racist? Possible. The line “people like me and people like you” sung to pure white crowds has a definitive racist feel, and your denials are meaningless…you said the Charlottesville rioters weren’t racists. It’s less about what he thought when he wrote it (if he in fact did, there’s accusations it was written by conservative operatives, but no evidence of that) and it’s more about what his audience hears…and I’m pretty sure what the conservative lily white crowd he’s playing to hears.

You found a few “blacks for Trump” who like it. Ok. You think that makes it less a racist anthem? 😂 that’s fine, it convinces you. You’ve never seen racism you believed existed…except racism against whites, you’ve complained that that’s a major problem. 😂 Do you honestly believe that all black people are going to love this conservative country song? You probably do, you are that delusional.

“ It's a damn shame what the world's gotten to
For people like me and people like you”. Who are those people, because the people in his crowd are all just one type of people. White middle class conservative and middle aged.

Or a pedophilic anthem?
“ I wish politicians would look out for miners
And not just minors on an island somewhere”
Really, he’s complaining the government (eventually) stopped Epstein’s pedophile island but only spent $850 million on welfare programs specifically supporting coal communities since Covid!?… https://www.eda.gov/funding/programs/american-rescue-plan/coal-communities-commitment#:~:text=Through%20ACC%2C%20EDA%20awards%20funds,%2C%20and%20re%2
Demployment%20opportunities.

An obese man complaining that fat people get food assistance while complaining about people starving in the street is the height of hypocrisy and ridiculousness. The solution isn’t to starve the obese, it’s to feed everyone…but that’s not his solution. To him, only some people deserve assistance….you can guess which ones.

Go ahead, love the song. It fits you. Understand it wouldn’t have ever charted if your political leaders like Walsh and Greene hadn’t told you to love it, made it a “conservative anthem” (their words). It’s not a great song, it’s a politically motivated whine about stupidity by an uneducated drunk. Before MTG and others started hyping him, he had barely a few hundred followers…his success is not “natural”, it’s a political move.

I hate the Bob Dylan quality it has, never liked him one bit.

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/aug/20/rich-men-north-of-richmond-oliver-anthony-protest-song-america

The best part is, the right has forgotten… who is the richest man north of Richmond? Hint, he moved to Florida in 2021, but wants to move back north of Richmond. If this song isn’t a pure conservative whine fest, it’s definitely 100% anti Trump…so which is it @bobknight33?

Why are so many here upvoting this anti governmental America hating regressive racist extreme Christian right MAGA anthem the anti government America hating extreme Christian MAGA right has latched onto?

Do you not know what he’s saying?
Do you not understand “people like me and people like you” refers to white Christian nationalist people?
Do you not understand what’s meant by “with an old soul” (it means they want to regress to pre-civil rights era Jim crow)?
Do you not understand the “rich men north of Richmond” he speaks about are just the Democratic “tax and spend” politicians (and maybe RINOS but not MAGA)?
Do you not notice the anti government assistance message?
Did you miss the pro incel message?
Did you miss all the fat shaming by a fat man?
Did you not notice the COMPLAINT that the government protected minors being raped on an island INSTEAD OF coal miners (who in fact have had dozens of government “welfare” programs created to get them retraining and jobs in industries that are less deadly, pollute less, and pay over minimum wage as well as instituted hundreds of governmental safety regulations that have cut miner deaths exponentially).

Did no one listen to the message of the song?
Did no one else notice the completely homogenous angry white middle age crowd?

WTF people!?

Lyrics-
I've been sellin' my soul, workin' all day
Overtime hours for bullshit pay
So I can sit out here and waste my life away
Drag back home and drown my troubles away

It's a damn shame what the world's gotten to
For people like me and people like you
Wish I could just wake up and it not be true
But it is, oh, it is

Livin' in the new world
With an old soul
These rich men north of Richmond
Lord knows they all just wanna have total control
Wanna know what you think, wanna know what you do
And they don't think you know, but I know that you do
'Cause your dollar ain't shit and it's taxed to no end
'Cause of rich men north of Richmond

I wish politicians would look out for miners
And not just minors on an island somewhere
Lord, we got folks in the street, ain't got nothin' to eat
And the obese milkin' welfare

Well, God, if you're 5-foot-3 and you're 300 pounds
Taxes ought not to pay for your bags of fudge rounds
Young men are puttin' themselves six feet in the ground
'Cause all this damn country does is keep on kickin' them down

Lord, it's a damn shame what the world's gotten to
For people like me and people like you
Wish I could just wake up and it not be true
But it is, oh, it is

Livin' in the new world
With an old soul
These rich men north of Richmond
Lord knows they all just wanna have total control
Wanna know what you think, wanna know what you do
And they don't think you know, but I know that you do
'Cause your dollar ain't shit and it's taxed to no end
'Cause of rich men north of Richmond

I had honestly thought his first performance of that song on TV wasn't until 1978, where he did my favourite. Maybe the above doesn't count as it was a stage show that happened to be filmed.

Apparently he was good friends with Jim Henson, which only makes it sweeter.
