David Mitchell's Soapbox - "Passionate" Advertising
I liked it until the end. I don't see too much hyperbole in a university like JHU saying they are "passionate". I mean, I think education is important so any educator could call themselves "passionate" in a way that a sofa salesman could not. But JHU is one of the top research institutes in the world. The Applied Physics Lab at JHU builds some of the most cutting edge spacecraft out there. The JHU school of medicine is one of the best in the world. I mean, are you really going to sneer at someone for saying "I'm passionate about curing cancer" or "I'm passionate about being the first explorer of an alien world"?
Maybe David Mitchell doesn't realize JHU is a prestigious research institute. The advertisement does make them look more like a community college.
Andy Richter Catches His Teenage Daughter Having Sex
lol when did that dog from sofa get there?
Urban Deer-Man Scares City Dwelling Canadian
There's an 80% chance that dude crashed out on the sofa after an evening of several drinks. Because it's in Canada, it's probably closer to 99%.
The Obama-Limbaugh Stimulus Plan Explained
If you're going to assume that the money people make is automatically the government's, then don't act sofa king surprised when people--robbed of incentive and freedom--do the bare minimum. Who do you think pays for all these failed socialist programs?
San Francisco to Introduce Marijuana Legalization Bill
Probably taking an unpopular stance here, but I don't really think marijuana should be legal. Maybe the stuff you used to get could be safely legalised but seriously the skunk that is around now is genuinely linked to extreme paranoia and schizophrenia. I hear it's something like 60 times the strength of the average 1960s joint.
Besides people do get cancer from mixing it with tobacco and smoking without a filter. I think it's daft to make out that there is zero risk to smoking weed.
And the idea that it would boost the economy?!!
OK so who's going to go to work for the first few days or so of easily available legalised weed? That's going to introduce a lot of people to long stretches on sofas with Doritos and pizza.
Maybe it's not as bad as alcohol, and it's certainly not as bad as loads of drugs.
Besides I've never personally known of anyone who smokes weed getting busted for it. People that suffer the most from it's illegality are large scale importers or growers, and they take the risk and make the profit, so I don't see that it's so bad that it's illegal. Why not just keep it as an underground interesting activity that has it's risks?
Who wants their prim and proper Auntie Janice facebooking them about coming round for a few spliffs with your Grandma and the bible group?
OK I take that back, maybe that would be funny.
Philosophical/Hypothetical Question... (Blog Entry by laura)
I like that dag. In fact, this whole thing isn't really that big of a deal to us, but it's hard not to think about one's mother when she's 90.
I believe the essential problem in this case is just the tremendous difference in worlds/realities. There are people who live and breathe by what everyone else thinks of them and what they're "supposed" to do, and there are those who don't.
Someone who keeps their house dust-free, lacy, watches soaps, and is involved in Eastern Star...doesn't understand our world at all. So it is uncomfortable for them when they visit because we have an unconventional house (by that I mean no sofa/loveseat/recliner configuration, no commercial tv, etc.) and I'm not vacumming in pearls and high heels.
When we visit them, we can slip into their reality and it's ok, but they visit to save on hotel bills when they go to meetings around here and that's when it gets ugly...they had been trying, though. That's what made it do-able for me. This one was the last straw, though.
I think I was feeling slightly guilty for not handling it differently. I think I'm over it now, though.

punching a cute animal is not enough for me to vote for it, sofa king annoying
I got into a fight at Wal-Mart yesterday (Documentaries Talk Post)
I read a completely uninteresting story in Sift Talk today. About some guy who roughed up a dumb kid at a store. I don't know why he shared it, other than to maybe make himself come across as manly to the rest of us. It might not even be true. Who knows, but more importantly, who cares?
I got in an argument with a convenience store clerk this morning. I shit you not. She said I owed $2.50 on Pump 1, and I said I hadn't even fueled up yet. We argued until she realized she was wrong, because it was some other guy who owed the $2.50 for fueling up his gas can. And now I'm telling you about it. Should I have punched her?
Anyway, if you liked my story I can share more of them with you on a daily basis. I might find change under my sofa cushions, or maybe I'll eat a bowl of soup. The possibilities are limitless.
Jump, kitty! You can make it!
Upvote for lack of reaction from the camera holder. I can but picture him giving the satisfied nod of a job well done. 3 hours with a tape measure and a sofa on wheels really paid off for her/him.
London Sift-Up? (British Talk Post)
A weekend in august sounds great! That gives me plenty of time to set aside money and look for cheap flight tickets. I'm in! Oh, and some sofa to crash on would be great, but not critical for my attendance.
London Sift-Up? (British Talk Post)
i can get up that way on a time scale that lax. cant offer sofa's though as Cornwall's a bit far for that (and land of leather haven't delivered them yet. which might be an issue).
Unless of course you're fit and i abduct you.
cat holding bunnies
Cue Sarah Palin voice:
And then one day I came home from the office, doncha know, and Scooby was hidin' out under the sofa and, also, there was blood and rabbit turds and hair and some eyeballs stuck to the shag rug. And I said, 'Scooby! Bad kitty! Bad kitty, Scooby! You made a no-no on Mommy's rug!' And ya know, he's just a rascal like that, a maverick kitty, gettin' in there and chewin' on them bunnies and reformin' their little hides.
I Double Dog Dare You... Again! (Wtf Talk Post)
Sifty is so *gay, he can taste what blankfist had to eat last week, just by sitting on his sofa.
*wtf
How to create a $1,000,000,000,000 industry!
>> ^MINK:
However, when it comes down to it, I simply don't trust "the consumer" to buy the right shit, any more than i trust "the voter" to make an intelligent decision about the next president.
You are very much correct here. I'm not big fan of the "american" dream aka a 3 bed 2 bath house in suburbia, 2 cars, a tv with living room set, a house full of knick knacks, and a fenced in backyard with a single decorative tree out front; but thats why I don't own a house, car, sofa, or tv.
However, that is a deficiency in philosophy rather than a deficiency in the market. We should address it by developing our philosophy, social structure, and culture--rather than trying to impose it via market controls.
As far as monopolies go, you might be surprised just who is advocating the regulation--it is almost never the consumer, and almost always the very big businesses you are talking about. I just added a video which talks about this.
