Tiny Jet Plane - How Cool Is This?

dannym3141 says...

I love how in such a small plane, you can really see what's going on. You can see him correct some kind of sideways force (wind i assume?) by pushing to the left, and see the response of the plane when he directs it.

For some reason - probably video games - i assumed those sticks would be incredibly sensitive. In retrospect it makes no sense for it to be very sensitive.

Noam Chomsky - Who rules the world now?

Fausticle says...

What the hell are you on about?

You missed the point where I said I agreed with him. Seems like you're reading too much into what I said. I respect Noam Chomsky and his views. All I said is he's got a monotone voice.

I don't recall stating my political views. I think George Lucas looks like a pelican but I still loved Star Wars. Are you one of those people that only reads one author and attacks anyone who even looks sideways at them?

Jesus Christ you think that I said the diddled kids or something.

Lol, it's okay Faust, there's lots of people like you who struggle to pay attention to things if they're not shiny or exciting enough for you. You get bonus points though for proving you were just pretending to have a normal 'ugh, man that guy's monotone voice' conversation when actually you were interested in attacking his character for political reasons. Well done.

Deus Ex - Mankind Divided 101

Babymech says...

Oh god... this is what it will sound like when cars start doing ads to sell themselves.

"Downtown Chicago at rush hour was always bad, but nowadays it's worse than ever... however, with my enhanced 3.5-liter DOHC 24-valve V6, rated at 300 horsepower, I am extraordinarily equipped to handle whatever is thrown at me. Of course, if things go sideways, I'm more than ready to get right in there - I can activate my predictive forward collision warning and forward emergency braking for a stealth approach, or trust in my shadowy master to take action with my driver attention alert... or maybe I should make a statement, and test the limits of my extruded aluminum roof crossmember and additional frame crossmember. If some jumped up elitist pedestrians want to get in the way, I'm more than willing to go all in, as I roll through like a... well, like a car. The only certainty, is that my driver will get to Baby Parkour to pick up Karen at exactly 4.30."

Removing a 40 Metre tree with a chainsaw and some rope

newtboy says...

Not at all. I hate seeing nice trees cut down as well.

I would guess they took it down because of the HUGE crack in a large branch that you can see at the start of the video.....oh...I just read the description where they explain EXACTLY why they took it down, it was dropping branches after a lightning strike, almost hitting someone. That likely means the trunk was also weakened, and it was certainly close enough to take out that house.

I can relate. I (sadly) took down a 30-40 meter Douglas Fir tree in my yard a few years back. It's still painful to think about. My tree had grown too tall, and had a weakened root system because it was growing sideways out of a small hill, and had massive gopher activity all around it. All the surrounding trees on other properties were cut well before we moved here, so it was also exposed to full wind. I was terrified that it was going to come down through my bedroom and kill the wife and myself, or through a neighbors house, so we had it cut. I've spent the nearly 3 years since then digging out the root ball (which WAS as weakened as I had thought) and turning the hole into a large pond. I still hate that we had to kill the tree, but it was a safety issue. At least I have firewood for years to come, and a pond.

Am I the only only one who thinks this sad? Why did they cut down such a magnificent tree?

Tailgater vs Brake Checker

SDGundamX says...

As has been said, both are douches (and depending on the state, both were guilty of driving infractions). Very real chance that by brake-checking, the tailgater is going to swerve into someone else (like the guy coming up from the on ramp). Even if that didn't happen, (s)he almost flew into oncoming traffic after losing control, which again would have caused damage to other cars and possible injury to innocent bystanders.

And even if the tailgater hadn't have lost control, the situation is escalated and you're looking at a possible road rage incident with the tailgater retaliating--which actually happened to me when I purposely drove slower (no brake-checking) while being tailgated. Guy jumped out of his car at the next traffic light and tried to get me out of mine to start a fight. I drove off when the light turned green and he actually chased me down, passed me, then skidded sideways and blocked the whole road with his car, again jumping out and wanting to fight. I backed up, turned around, and drove straight to the nearest police station (which was thankfully just a half-mile away)--he didn't follow me into the lot and just kept driving.

Now, if that guy had had a gun, I would almost certainly be dead. The smugness that comes from "teaching someone a lesson" is not worth the potential injury you may cause yourself or others when 2-ton vehicles travelling at high speeds are involved. As has been said, the proper response in these situations is to safely get out of the way and possibly call the police if the driving seems erratic enough to warrant it.

John Green's Fiery Race Car Disaster

iaui says...

I can't really see what happens but it kinda looks like his car just spontaneously catches on fire. Certainly he overcorrects and causes some undue stress with the car sliding sideways over the ground but... I don't think that should have caused it to start on fire. Basically, I think he's taking a bit more blame for the fire than he should be.

Pro-lifers not so pro-life after all?

iaui says...

Hah, yes, that came out a little sideways. I was intending to relate the required 72-hour waiting period, vaginal ultrasound, etc. required for abortion to the background checks, etc. that should be required for owning/purchasing a gun.

A better word would have been 'prerequisites': But having sane prerequisites, ideologically similar to those now required for abortions, would definitely help.

What? Background checks for abortions?!? What ARE you talking about?

Airsoft Sniper

Chairman_woo says...

I've played airsoft like this for a few years now off an on so feel well enough qualified to comment.

It's largely a matter of range. Most sites allow up to 500fps on snipers (and some american ones go up to 800 or so I believe), but they have a minimum engagement range (usually about 25 meters, presumably more for the silly american ones).

Basically, non automatic sniper rifles are allowed to be significantly more powerful than the 330fps (400 in some countries) other weapons are limited to, but as a result can't be used at short range (that's what pistols and compact SMG's are for!).

If you are close to the minimum range limit and it hits unprotected skin, they sting really badly, enough to draw a little blood sometimes. It's not entirely dissimilar to being whipped by a wet towel, excruciating for about half a second then it tails off to just stinging and swearing.

If it hits your vest, glasses, hat etc. then it wont really hurt at all (but you still felt it you cheating bastards! ), likewise if you are out beyond 50meters or so as the power drops off with range as you'd expect. (My brother can sometimes make shots out to 70-80meters with a VSR but you can barely feel it)

Shoot at point blank and your target can be forgiven for walking over and punching you in the face....right after they stop swearing and get up off the ground. (entirely possible to penetrate exposed skin at that range)

In practice though, trying to storm a building/room vs automatic rifles etc. tends to be far more painful an experience than being sniped. Unless that is someone snipes the inside of your nose sideways on (it hurt as much as you imagine it did).

We also once had a guy knocked clean out by a grenade launcher to the face at point blank . But it was a Co2 powered thing and I believe they aren't allowed inside buildings any more (can't think why).

Re: paintballs, in my much more limited experience, they are waaaaay worse than BB's if they are full power and reasonably close range. Concussions, broken bones and broken skin are all entirely possible (though not likely), but bruises and welts are basically standard issue.

I believe some sites run compressed air guns (rather than Co2) at much lower power levels, so I imagine they are a lot more tolerable.
Paintballers tend to be more on the extreme sports side of things (wheras airsoft tends to be more biased towards military geeks/gamers), and so many sites have a bit of a "pain is weakness leaving the body" attitude to power levels.

In the UK at least the velocity limit for paintballs at competition level is 300fps, for most airsoft sites the limit is 330fps. You only have to look at a BB vs a paintball to see what a discrepancy in energy that equates to!!!

I'd have to think being shot by an airsoft would hurt far worse than a paint ball gun... but heck, in this video http://videosift.com/video/Funny-Airsoft-Hostage there's a kid playing, and some of these people get hit what looks like in the head by the sniper.

Black Man Vs. White Man Carrying AR-15 Legally
