Family arguments have just gotten sinister (Wtf Talk Post)

peggedbea says...

Oh, it's totally handled. My sister is out for now, she's become just as destructive as she was on drugs and even our most conservative siblings agree - she's fucking nuts and we hope her life is good one day, but we just can't be around her. she didn't even come to thanksgiving, and she was not missed.

and mom wasn't "mean", she was genuinely concerned. because we live in a world where all the words have been changed and people trust whatever sounds the most bizarre and scary. she's always been kind of right-wingy, but in a libertarian kind of way, and conversations with here were not complete nonsense 10 years ago.

i was curious though, if it's just having this effect on my family because they have weird mental illnesses or if other people are also encountering this weird language and attitude shifts in their lives? >> ^Ryjkyj:

Bea, I'm not suggesting that you do this but remember that their is a certain point of judgment that it is not reasonable to pass. If you try and try, and seem to get nowhere, then sometimes you just need to walk away. This is true even in situations that involve your family. I'm not saying that you need to disappear if you're at this point. Just that you need to draw your boundaries very clearly, and if someone (anyone) is disrespectful enough to cross those boundaries, then you shouldn't give them your time or your sanity.
I have a very close family, so sometimes it's hard to tell when things have gone to far. But trust me, just because they are your family doesn't give them the right to attack you. Sometimes it's a lot easier to tell them that if they're not going to listen to you, and you can't talk it out in a calm, reasonable way, then you're just not going to be involved. Not all the time, but more than most people think.

I would think that many carjackers would do something similar - going from carthief to kidnapper or murderer is a big, big step. Thieves usually do it for easy money, extortion is hard money, murder is no money.

I read somewhere, where a university professor got his laptop stolen, the thief returned his files and data on a usb stick in the profs mailbox (but kept the laptop). Saved him a hell of a lot of work having to recreate it, and insurance pays for the laptop anyway, so that was a much smaller hassle. The point is criminals are still people, but usually desperate or weak-willed.

Couple of weeks ago, something similar happened here, except the robber had some sense of decency, and the mother was the idiot.
So this woman stops her car in front of the building she lives in, and leaves the car open, with the key in the ignition, and a 6 or 7 year old child and a toddler inside the car, to go up to the apartment and pick up some stuff.
Some guy comes along and steals the car, with both children still inside.
A few miles away, he stops in front of a pharmacy, and tells the older kid to take his sibling inside because their aunt is supposedly waiting for them inside.
The pharmacist obviously didn't knew who they were, so he took them to a police station.

*cringe* whatever campaign advisor/think-tank came up with that deserves a swift kick in the nuts.

snippets from the press release:

[...] "by ideas raised at a grassroots Obama fundraiser" [...] "Parents and older siblings designed and provided the T-Shirts and the banner" [...]

"As Sunday approached, a neighbor volunteered a home. Production wizards got wind of the project and offered their help in recording it. The likes of Jeff Zucker, Holly Schiffer, Peter Rosenfeld, Darin Moran, Jean Martin, Andy Blumenthal, and Nick Phoenix rearranged schedules to participate. Holly Schiffer was able to get three High Definition cameras (Panasonic HVX250's), and an AVID editing facility. When Jeff Zucker went to pick up the camera package, Ted Schilowitz happened to be there and offered a RED camera set up on a Steadi Cam."

... yeah right ;-) Gotta hand it to the republicans- they have got a head-start at camouflaging their campaign efforts - FOX news and the brainwash crowd would be fools not to pick up on that theme.

Yes there's some distancing from police, I have a cousin whose husband is a cop. He gave me a bad vibe for awhile, couldn't put my finger on it. Then one christmas get together I saw him talking about how cops can take down people easily by controlling the arm behind the back...and talking about how he could do it to anyone there no problem. So an uncle whose a short guy but strong as hell said I doubt it. So the cop tried, failed, made an excuse that he didn't want to hurt him...so the uncle said let's go outside and you can try all you like. That is teenage showoff kind of mentality, and that is not someone you want handling a gun and in charge of deciding what to do with you when they think they've got you on something. I'd guess his age to be late 20s maybe 30 at that time, uncle was probably late 40s or 50.

And a year or so after this, my brother got in trouble, fairly serious trouble. And the cousin's husband called up "to help him", gave him A LOT of bad advice under the guise of being family and wanting to help out. Told him to admit everything, didn't need a lawyer, the cops would take it easy on him...etc etc. An attempt to further his career as being "true blue" I guess. And that demonstrated his core character without any room for doubt left. If it had been his own son in that trouble, he would not have offered that advice...he'd have kept his mouth shut, got him a lawyer and went from there.

I can sympathize with cops who are there to actually protect people and put themselves in harms way to do so, but showboating, intention bad advice and attempted trickery, and no apparent loyalties or common decency is not someone who deserves respect as a human being. So they use the badge to demand respect....and that's where a lot of the trouble stems.....Im a cop so I should.......get free coffee.....get free donuts.....get free pizza........get a free pass......get the girl.......get money........get respect........get your undivided attention and obedience...... get my way.......

And my brother went on to develop a mental disorders and drug problems related to it. I've seen cops threaten him, ready to beat him down when he was not violent just mouthy and contrary. He got his arm and shoulder broken and damaged so badly while he was being held in jail for contempt of court (his mouthiness (mental disorder), not related to any charges) that he had to have a surgeon consult to see if it needed surgery to repair it. They withheld medications from him. Didn't bother to review tapes to catch the 5-8 guys who beat him down on his first day in with the population (they didn't hold him there due to his mental disorder, but all the sudden he was magically put in with the population). It took him pressing charges through a probation officer 2-3 weeks later to get any action rolling...and they still say he's responsible for paying all of the medical bills he incurred due to them placing him in with the people who beat his ass.

I can see why people hate anything to do with the justice system.....he had it bad and all he needed was someone to force medical treatment on him. Other people have had it worse, and no one steps up and takes on some personal responsibility to make sure people are not being abused....because it's not the way things are done. They are there to inflict maximum penalties on people through deception, subterfuge, and basically any way afforded to them. The only people who are not submitted to THIS system are rich, well lawyered citizens, powerful citizens, and close cop-relatives (parents, siblings, children).

Baby Otter Plays with a Stuffed Walrus

speedyfastcat says...

I didn't have enough information when I initially commented on this video (because the video didn't provide it), and I jumped to conclusions - my bad!! In any event, it would definitely have been helpful if the video had indicated if the otter was a sea otter, river otter, or ...

Here's some fun and interesting information about otters from the World Famous San Diego Zoo web site:
Class: Mammalia (Mammals)
Order: Carnivora
Family: Mustelidae
Genera: 6
Species: 13
Length: largest—giant otter Pteronura brasiliensis, up to 7.8 feet (2.4 meters); smallest—Asian small-clawed otter Amblonyx cinereus, up to 3 feet (0.9 meters)
Weight: largest—sea otter Enhydra lutris, males up to 95 pounds (43 kilograms); smallest—Asian small-clawed otter, up to 11 pounds (5 kilograms)
Life span: 15 to 20 years
Gestation: from 2 months for smaller species to 5 months for sea otters
Number of young at birth: 1 to 5, usually 2
Size at birth: 4.5 ounces (128 grams) for smaller species to 5 pounds (2.3 kilograms) for sea otters
Age of maturity: 2 to 5 years
Conservation status: four species, including the sea otter, are endangered; three otter species are vulnerable.
Fun facts
• You can tell otter species apart by the shape and amount of fur on their noses.
• Unlike other marine mammals, sea otters do not have a layer of blubber to keep them warm; they rely on warm air trapped in their fur. Sea otters have the densest fur of any mammal, with about 100,000 hairs in a space about the size of a postage stamp!
• Most otter species capture prey with their mouths, but Asian small-clawed otters and sea otters have flexible fingers and grab with their hands.
• North American and European river otters have been known to share dens with beavers—but the beavers do all the building!

Mammals: Otter
Range: Africa, Asia, and parts of North America, Central America, and South America
Habitat: sea otters are found in the Pacific Ocean and along the coastline, but most otter species live in rivers, lakes, and marshes

Champion swimmers
Otters are the only serious swimmers in the weasel family. They spend most of their lives in the water, and they are made for it! Their sleek, streamlined bodies are perfect for diving and swimming. Otters also have long, slightly flattened tails that move sideways to propel them through the water while their back feet act like rudders to steer.

Almost all otters have webbed feet, some more webbed than others, and they can close off their ears and noses as they swim underwater. They can stay submerged for about five minutes, because their heart rate slows and they use less oxygen. They’re also good at floating on the water’s surface, because air trapped in their fur makes them more buoyant. Have you ever noticed that when an otter comes out of the water, its outer fur sticks together in wet spikes, while the underneath still seems dry? That’s because they have two layers of fur: a dense undercoat that traps air; and a topcoat of long, waterproof guard hairs. Keeping their fur in good condition is important, so otters spend a lot of time grooming. In fact, if their fur becomes matted with something like oil, it can damage their ability to hunt for food and stay warm.

Party animals
Otters are very energetic and playful. You might say they love to party! They are intelligent and curious, and they are usually busy hunting, investigating, or playing with something. They like to throw and bounce things, wrestle, twirl, and chase their tails. They also play games of "tag" and chase each other, both in the water and on the ground. River otters seem to like sliding down mud banks or in the snow—they’ll do it over and over again! Otters also make lots of different sounds, from whistles, growls, and screams to barks, chirps, and coos. All this activity is part of the otters’ courtship, social bonding, and communication, and since otter pups need practice, they tend to be even more playful than the adults.

Life as a pup
Most otters are born in a den, helpless and with their eyes closed. The mother takes care of them, often chasing the father away after their birth, although in some species the dad may come back after a couple of weeks to help raise them. The babies, called pups, open their eyes and start exploring the den at about one month, start swimming at two months, and stay with their mother and siblings until they are about one year old, when they head off on their own.

For sea otters in their ocean habitat it’s a little different—the pups are born with their eyes open, and they have a special coat of hair so they can float, even though they can’t swim yet. They are carried on their mother’s stomach until they are about two months old, when they start swimming and diving on their own.

For most otters, social groups are made up of a mother, her older offspring, and her newest pups; the males spend most of their time alone or with a few other males. During breeding time or where there’s lots of food, though, larger groups of otters may gather, especially among sea otters in kelp beds.

The seafood diet
Otter food may not all come from the ocean, but it is definitely fishy! River otters eat mostly fish, frogs, crayfish, crabs, and mollusks, with an occasional small mammal or bird. Sea otters eat many of the same things, but mostly sea urchins, abalone, crabs, mussels, and clams, which they crack open against rocks they hold on their stomachs. Otters have long, sensitive whiskers that help them find prey, even in murky water. Some species, like the Asian small-clawed otter Amblonyx cinereus, also use their hands to probe into mud or under rocks to find a tasty meal that might be hiding there. River otters use lots of energy and digest their food very fast, so they eat several times a day. Sea otters need to eat 20 to 25 percent of their body weight each day. That’s a lot of abalone!
The otters at the San Diego Zoo are fed carnivore diet, carrots, and either squid or trout. They also get small amounts of "treats" for enrichment, like crayfish, worms, potatoes, or yams.

For those who up-voted this video, you should be ashamed and disgusted with the apathy that has taken hold in your hearts and minds. Study: ALL Men Watch Porn (TYT)

It's kind of amazing to me that porn has, in my lifetime, gone from being outlieing deviant smut - to public service for male physiological release.
I'd like to see more reports on the psychological effect of porn on people. Addiction, diminished actual sexual response etc.
I'm not saying that porn is a terrible thing, but its acceptance into mainstream society has a huge impact on our culture.
I still remember this guy in college, in public speaking class, who advocated "relief booths" on street corners, to be housed by willing sex workers, to provide release for "stressed out males" - thereby reducing the masculine ills of society - fights, wars, etc. The premise being that most of the major problems of the world stem from male sexual frustration. He would say, that it's not mistake missiles and bullets are shaped like penises.

Give people food and regular sex and there would not be a reason to go to war... everybody would be full and satisfied. I'd give that guy some cred.

The "huge impact" mentioned has many facets. Think about leaving a fresh-baked cobbler in the window facing an alley or perhaps a gun near brothers 0-7 the oldest of which is as developmentally prepared for touching it as he is to his responsibilities to his siblings-One's ability to handle the overload relative to social mores and civility reveals the real societal rub. Yeah, porn affords release. How much can simpletons handle?

Sesame Street Pulls Controversial Katy Perry Duet with Elmo

6 year olds wouldn't think anything of what Katy is wearing. If they've been breast fed then they've seen boobies every day for about half of their lives and more if they have younger siblings. Only adults would be shocked and appalled at her outfit. The public is always outraged when a woman reveals too much of herself as if her body is not hers to show.

Let's speculate... would I be a progressive if I was raised in your family, and would you be a capital-generating scientific rationalist if you were raised in my family? We can actually answer that, because my parents and siblings were in fact liberal, and my instincts were aligned against their instincts since my earliest memories. That's to my benefit, since my instincts are orders of magnitude more useful in the world than their instincts, but that's not really just.

I could just as easily hold that situation up as proof that it's not genetic, either. Of course, the right answer to that is that both genetics and learned behaviors are more complex than "traits in the parent appear in the children".

>> ^chilaxe:
Liberals oppose genetics because it's immutable, and they oppose reprogenetics because it has to do with genetics, which they oppose. Fast forward to the 2030s and liberalism has done a 180 after opposing genetics for 100 years, because they've realized advancing everybody's biology is the only way to create genuine human equality instead of pretend human equality.
That's great news. It means we have a choice.

You may need to elaborate on the "liberals oppose genetics" comment -- we like research into genetics, and I haven't really heard any serious discussion of reprogenetics in liberal circles.

Human genetic engineering is gonna be a big political shitstorm. My own prediction is that liberals are going to come down on the stance that all US citizens should be provided subsidized reprogentic services, to try to make sure all men are still being created equally. I fully expect conservatives to have their usual coalition -- the free marketeers will object to having an advantage of wealth lessened by "socialism", and the theocons will want it banned outright (but will never quite succeed in getting it, just like bans on abortion or contraception).
