The Robots are coming for Washington State Apples

newtboy jokingly says...

That is English, motherfucker, do YOU speak it?

Espalier: a fruit tree or ornamental shrub whose branches are trained to grow flat against a wall, supported on a lattice or a framework of stakes.

It's not an advanced or unused word, especially for orchard owners and gardeners.

Edit: I will not be dumbing down my vocabulary to accommodate someone else...they can choose to learn or remain ignorant of their own native tongue. I shall not become a lowest common denominator speaker....that only serves to make us all as dumb as Trump.

Cop Tries To Ride Dirty On Confiscated Bike And Crashes

Drachen_Jager says...

I know many Americans have a tendency to put cops on a pedestal, politicians and media outlets talk about how "dangerous" policing is and how they have to do a tough job under constant threat of violence while completely ignoring that part of the threat of violence comes because of police misbehaviour. It's also not a very dangerous job. Statistically, being a gardener is more dangerous than being a cop. You don't see gardeners stabbing random black shrubs with shovels and quoting the dangers of their profession to justify it do you?

Most of the problem of out-of-control policing is because they're held up as holy warriors, haloed in glittering samite, when they're just people, and many of them are BAD people.

The whole hero cop myth just needs to die, but it won't because Americans, by and large, are cowards. Afraid of the shadows, afraid of black men, afraid of foreigners, muslims, anything or anybody "different". You think you NEED cops to be tough, rugged heroes to save you from the things that go bump in the night. You NEED cops to be brutal and without remorse, killing at the slightest provocation because they're "just doing their jobs". Otherwise every street corner would have a mugger ready to rob you blind.

Truth is, the vast majority of Americans have been the victim of a crime. They probably didn't even know it, and you can be sure the cops never investigated. Wage theft in America amounts to far more than all other criminal activity combined. It's intentional and ongoing. Until the Walton family is in chains the cops will never truly be in your corner. They are a tool of people like the Waltons. Their job is not to protect you, it's to protect the status quo. If protecting you helps maintain that status quo, then that's what they'll do. If not.... well, ask Willie McCoy about that.

Many will die shortly

wtfcaniuse says...

Pretty sure those are trees or shrubs, I can't see anything that is obviously a person on the dam wall. They move a lot quicker than the people near the bottom and they seem far too big. They might be cattle or something as Dandyman suggested but I don't think they're people. Impossible to say for sure.

I don't mean to be callous but it wasn't until I noticed the people and the car that I was able to get an idea of the scale of the collapse. The trees and buildings don't really give a sense of scale like the people did.

R.I.P.

Actually, it looks like there are people on the dam itself. If you look center/right on the hill, it appears there are multiple figures starting to run when it breaks.

Was anyone else not remotely impressed when he pointed out the detail and they looked at some crappy shrub on the ground. I just wish they'd have co-op then I'd be happy, since even a shit game is great in co-op.

Damn Nature, You Sca-- Wait. Just a Deer?

Payback says...

>> ^Winstonfield_Pennypacker:

M'eh - deer are voracious. A pack of deer in an area will strip it bare, and they'll eat anything they can wrap their pieholes around. When it is convenient they'll eat animals, bugs - whatever. It's just that in most cases it is much safer and more convenient to graze on plants so that's what they do most of the time.

Friend of mine has had his cedar shrubs decimated to a height of about 4'. He doesn't believe me it's deer. He's completely correct that cedar is mildly poisonous, but that doesn't stop them. Told him to spray cougar urine around.

He got his mom to piss in the grass. Don't know why.

Delaware is now safe and basketball hoop free.

pho3n1x says...

That's utter bullshit. A basketball hoop is CLEARLY not a sign.

If the case is made that people might run off the road and hit the "sign" (basketball pole), then one of two things need to happen:
1) Force everyone in the state to re-take their driver's license tests, since they obviously have issues staying on the road.
2) Remove all roadway lighting fixtures, utility poles, traffic signs/signals. They are a similar hazard.

Reference: http://www.deldot.gov/information/media_gallery/2005/illegal_signs/index.shtml

--
DelDOT is enforcing laws designed to keep the State's Rights-Of-Way clear from illegal and dangerous signs. The law is simple:

DelDOT must remove any sign posted in the Clear Zone (in medians and approx. 10' from the edge of the roadway), including those attached to utility poles anywhere along the roadway.
Any sign in the State's Rights-of-Way that is not in the Clear Zone will also be removed.
Exemptions apply outside the Clear Zone only for signs posted during a period of 30-days prior to and 30-days after an election, in a district in which an election is held.
Sign owners are subject to fines of $25 per sign and a recovery fee of $15 per sign.
Confiscated signs will be disposed of after 30 days. The fines still apply.

" Last fall, DelDOT sent letters to at least eight residents in the Radnor Green and Ashbourne Hills subdivisions saying their street-side basketball hoops violated the state’s Clear Zone law, which prohibits hoops, trees, shrubs and other objects from being within seven feet of the pavement's edge in subdivisions."

edit: I also see at least 3 trees and several shrubs within 7' of the roadway that would also fall under their Clear Law, why is no one pulling those out? Oh, because elderly people don't have to slow down for kids who are playing in the roadway near shrubs...

The TelePrompter Obsession

HollywoodBob says...

Every televised speech President Shrub gave was delivered with the use of a teleprompter, the wing-nutters just don't want to acknowledge that it's a non issue.

I love how McCain couldn't look at Obama during the debates. He just keep staring at the moderator with a "get the bully off my back" look on his face.

How bad did Wall Street rip you off

newtboy says...

EPIC FAIL- Bill O'Really. It was Ex-Prez Shrub and his lackeys that insisted that there not be a provision in their governmental giveaway that limited bonuses, they actually came out publicly and said if limits were in the bill they would veto it because they claimed no one would take the "bailout" if they couldn't spend it on bonuses (or "executive compensation"). I know it's hard, but try to remember what happened last year under your messiah's watch and plan, not just last week, Bill. Obama is pushing for limits on personal spending of the "bailout" money. It's still a giveaway, but at least the dumbocratic plan has limits and a stated plan, not just a number attached to a statement "give us the money or the economy is doomed, NOW!!"
Both plans are bankrupting our country. Both sides are acting like teenagers with their parents credit cards, spending someone else's money, or worse, someone else's credit like there's no tomorrow with no plan whatsoever to pay it off. In fact, the republicans (who used to be the small government, fiscally responsible party years ago, but no longer) want to lower taxes, effectively lowering the federal income while at the same time increasing spending to unfathomable rates (doubling the national debt in the last 6 months, or worse). No ones clean here (except perhaps Ron Paul), but the retardicans are far dirtier than the dumbocrats lately.

Nevermind the ground effect -- perhaps this is just me, but isn't the scale of the plane completely off given the average size of those shrubs relative to the position of the shadow? Especially of the light is coming somewhere from almost directly behind it?

Life in zero gravity

Heres a few practical benefits:

TV Satellite Dish

NASA developed ways to correct errors in the signals coming from the spacecraft. This technology is used to reduce noise (that is, messed up picture or sound) in TV signals coming from satellites.

Medical Imaging

NASA developed ways to process signals from spacecraft to produce clearer images. (See more on digital information and how spacecraft send images from space.) This technology also makes possible these photo-like images of our insides.

Vision Screening System

Uses techniques developed for processing space pictures to examine eyes of children and find out quickly if they have any vision problems. The child doesn't have to say a word!

Ear Thermometer

Instead of measuring temperature using a column of mercury (which expands as it heats up), this thermometer has a lens like a camera and detects infrared energy, which we feel as heat. The warmer something is (like your body), the more infrared energy it puts out. This technology was originally developed to detect the birth of stars.

Fire Fighter Equipment

Fire fighters wear suits made of fire resistant fabric developed for use in space suits.

Smoke Detector

First used in the Earth orbiting space station called Skylab (launched back in 1973) to help detect any toxic vapors. Now used in most homes and other buildings to warn people of fire.

Sun Tiger Glasses

From research done on materials to protect the eyes of welders working on spacecraft, protective lenses were developed that block almost all the wavelengths of radiation that might harm the eyes, while letting through all the useful wavelengths that let us see.

Automobile Design Tools

A computer program developed by NASA to analyze a spacecraft or airplane design and predict how parts will perform is now used to help design automobiles. This kind of software can save car makers a lot of money by letting them see how well a design will work even before they build a prototype.

Cordless Tools

Portable, self-contained power tools were originally developed to help Apollo astronauts drill for moon samples. This technology has lead to development of such tools as the cordless vacuum cleaner, power drill, shrub trimmers, and grass shears.

Aerodynamic Bicycle Wheel

A special bike wheel uses NASA research in airfoils (wings) and design software developed for the space program. The three spokes on the wheel act like wings, making the bicycle very efficient for racing.

Thermal Gloves and Boots

These gloves and boots have heating elements that run on rechargeable batteries worn on the inside wrist of the gloves or embedded in the sole of the ski boot. This technology was adapted from a spacesuit design for the Apollo astronauts.

Space Pens

The Fisher Space Pen was developed for use in space. Most pens depend on gravity to make the ink flow into the ball point. For this space pen, the ink cartridge contains pressured gas to push the ink toward the ball point. That means, you can lie in bed and write upside down with this pen! Also, it uses a special ink that works in very hot and very cold environments.

Shock Absorbing Helmets

These special football helmets use a padding of Temper Foam, a shock absorbing material first developed for use in aircraft seats. These helmets have three times the shock absorbing ability of previous types.

Ski Boots

These ski boots use accordion-like folds, similar to the design of space suits, to allow the boot to flex without distortion, yet still give support and control for precision skiing.

Failsafe Flashlight

This flashlight uses NASA's concept of system redundancy, which is always having a backup for the parts of the spacecraft with the most important jobs. This flashlight has an extra-bright primary bulb and an independent backup system that has its own separate lithium battery (also a NASA developed technology) and its own bulb.

Invisible Braces

These teeth-straightening braces use brackets that are made of a nearly invisible translucent (almost see-through) ceramic material. This material is a spinoff of NASA's advanced ceramic research to develop new, tough materials for spacecraft and aircraft.

Edible Toothpaste

This is a special foamless toothpaste developed for the astronauts to use in space (where spitting is not a very good idea!) Although this would be a great first toothpaste for small children, it is no longer available.

Joystick Controllers

Joystick controllers are used for lots of things now, including computer games and vehicles for people with disabilities. These devices evolved from research to develop a controller for the Apollo Lunar Rover, and from other NASA research into how humans actually operate (called "human factors").

Advanced Plastics

Spacecraft and other electronics need very special, low-cost materials as the base for printed circuits (like those inside your computer). Some of these "liquid crystal polymers" have turned out to be very good, low-cost materials for making containers for foods and beverages.
