SimCity 5 - Edit, tweak, or destroy anybody's public city

Jinx says...

This won't be the first time EA has shafted its customers and it won't be the last. The only way they'll learn that they can't operate their business like this is if it no longer becomes profitable, and I don't see that happening. Evidently people will buy it on release regardless of the warnings or EA's history.

This is what frustrates me, because I know friends who will whine and bitch about EA after having a bad experience with one of their games, or they'll read an article on the way EA treats its employees or the well documented way they bribe reviewers or try and manipulate user reviews on metacritic etc and yet when Simcity comes around they have it on preorder. What a surprise, EA are laughing their way to the bank with your money and apparently customers tears don't register on their bottom line enough for them to care.

Don't buy their games. Support the developers/producers who are worth your money.

Sweet act, never seen anything quite like that.

I do wonder if he added weight to the feather; wouldn't be hard to stick something in the shaft of it. Great showmanship though, could have done it with a little twig, but a feather is way more interesting and gives the crowd something to focus on.

DJESUS UNCROSSED - SNL

Comcast? Slow ass internet?
Not sure where that came from or how it applies. We don't even have Comcast in Canada. *shrug*

Anyway my point is that I'm tired of these content producers that won't allow people outside the U.S. from viewing their stuff. We can watch SNL on TV. We could pirate it. We could use proxy servers to get around the ban. It's completely asinine and ignorant. They will gladly sell Canadians shows by the season on DVDs, but they get the complete shaft otherwise. Wish they would respect their foreign customers a bit more is all.

Holy shit you're so right.

How a Turbocharger Works

coolhund says...

Not quite right. In normal operation a turbo charger saves fuel, but under wide open throttle and general fast driving conditions, it uses much more fuel than NA engines with similar power.

Also a supercharger works similar, but its not propelled by exhaust gases, but directly by the engines crank shaft (over a belt).

How a Turbocharger Works

charliem says...

You can afford...being the prime question here.
Most cars these days (read: not performance cars) are made on the cheap.
Forged connecting rods, and billet valves / cam shafts / high tensile head bolts are not cheap, therfore they dont go into the vast majority of modern engines.

Putting a turbo on your engine alone would vastly increase compression ratios, stressing just about every internal part in the car. The poverty pack econo-cars can not handle any more than about 4-6lb's of boost before things start heating up, warping, and shaking themselves apart violently.

Cost to get things up to spec?

erm....well a good set of H beam forged con-rods can cost you anywhere from 600 upwards (generally upwards...a lot upwards), and thats just the part, not including installation. Getting the valves reworked, vavle springs, cam shaft....thats ~2k+ if youre doing it on the cheap.

Then you need an intercooler to take the heat out of the intake air (as the turbo compresses intake air, and therfore heats it up) so as to keep the economy levels up....and piping to go with it, your looking at another 1k at least.

Then you need an ECU mod, piggy back if you can get away with it, around the 1k figure, otherwise a full standalone can cost upwards of 1.5k.

Then you need to program and tune, upwards again of 1.5k.

To turbo a non-turbo economy engine povery-pack car, you are looking at LEAST 5k+, and thats doing it on mega budget, you wont get any reliability or safety out of it.

Before you even get to put the turbo on, which itself is about 300-1.5k depending on what turbine you purchase, you also need a turbo manifold to redirect all of the exhaust gas into a turbo, and have an outlet pipe that allows waste-gate dumps into your exhaust. So you also need to get your cat-back system redone too, which is about 700-1500 to get it done right.

Doing it right? Start counting from 10k....and keep going.

Doing it right would be to upgrade the breaks (bigger discs, bigger calipers, bigger master cylinder), the suspension (coilovers), and doing some serious chassis strengthening to take the increased loads (front/rear sway bar upgrades, front/rear strut tower bars etc..)

Its not cheap unfortunately

Evolution of Perpetual Motion: Free Energy Generator

robbersdog49 says...

The wikipedia article on magnets is a good place to start. Magnets can lose their magnetism, but that's not the same as saying they have energy in them that's being used up like a battery.

If you stand next to a large lump of clay and then step onto the clay you've gained some potential energy. The taller the lump of clay the more potential energy you've gained. However, this energy hasn't come from the clay, you've had to use energy to gain it. It took you more energy to step onto the clay than you gained in potential energy so this couldn't be the basis for a perpetual motor.

Next to the lump of clay is a large bellows attached to a balloon. You step off the clay onto the bellows. You drop down to ground level and pump up the balloon a bit. You can repeat this process over and over until the balloon is pumped up. However, each time you step onto the clay it sags a bit and you're not so high up. After a while if you do this for long enough the clay will be well trodden down and each time you step off the clay onto the bellows it will have hardly any effect. The clay has lost it's ability to help you pump up the balloon. It's lost it's height. But at no point did it give you any energy to pump up the balloon. You used your own energy to step up onto the clay to give yourself the potential energy, which you then converted to kinetic energy by stepping onto the bellows and pumping up the balloon.

This is exactly the same as a magnet losing it's magnetism. It's not like a battery losing power by powering something else. There's no energy in a magnet. It never gives energy to anything else. Like a drive shaft doesn't power a car, it just helps move the energy from the engine to the wheels.

Magnets fool everyone by working at a distance. Everything else we deal with in a physical way has to touch something else to affect it. You can't get a nail into wood without physically hitting it with a hammer. Magnets confuse us and that makes it easy for scammers with their perpetual motion devices to make us believe things that aren't true. We don't have the right wiring to easily figure out what's going on intuitively.

Magnets simply don't work how you think they do, or how the maker of this video wants you to believe they do.

HenningKO said:

Oh yeah? I thought magnets had something like energy stored in the same way as a battery. Something about the ordered parallel state of their electrons will decay into a disordered one, so eventually the magnet will lose its magnetism. Faster if its being used to push stuff around. Not so?

How do you feel about the current promote system? (User Poll by Hybrid)

chingalera says...

My beefs with the new promote set-up include, time spent in and amount of promoted videos available to watch and the lack of a handy "RECENTLY PROMOTED" tab all it's own. I like to rifle through promotes, beggar's chasm, and deadpool, in that order when I log in and begin flagrantly slinging votes around for reasons non-linear.

I kinna dig Hybrids mock-up but the teensy tile gallery is too teensy...A "recently promoted" tab can make that all go away. Maybe let them stay in the recently promoted area a bit longer?? Users from such varied time zones here get shafted when somethings promoted while frequent users are sleeping.

seltar said:

If there is more than one promoted video now, the others get hidden. The "next video" link is basically invisible, especially for users not familiar with the site.
This is the mockup @Hybrid made. http://i.imgur.com/85T5i.jpg
And it's tenfolds better than status quo, imo.
