Conflict in Israel and Palestine: Crash Course World History

RedSky says...

I'm surprised he glosses over Israel's supposed right to expand land through military conquest. That's what perpetuates this conflict, civilian settlement in West Bank land with evictions of current Palestians using dodgy means.

The argument that the occupation is about security concerns is clearly hollow, it's been a process of gradual civilian settlement with the intent of the West Bank becoming part of Israel de facto for decades.

The trouble is, Arab population growth in both Israel and the West Bank will continue to outpace that of Jews and instead it will soon become an apartheid regime increasingly at conflict with itself.

Some kind of settlement large enough to make facebook implement some copyright checking technology, or at least pay victims similar rates that Google pays for legit views on youtube.

Authorities Seize Family Home Over $40-Worth of Drugs

RedSky says...

It's just bad legislature towards the role of a police force creating poor incentives to earn revenue rather than 'serve and protect'. I'm sure state budget cuts of late given the low growth rate have been an additional squeeze. The Economist had an article about this practice at federal/state level, particularly with the Justice Department essentially now being seen as profit centre.

Bit off topic, but the article itself is an interesting take on how back door settlements (particularly with banks recently) have not been in the public interest when they have circumvented the legal system (without establishing precedent and on dubious grounds having never actually been presented publicly as evidence) and have usually led to nobody personally prosecuted and no admission of guilt through a plea deal.

Authorities Seize Family Home Over $40-Worth of Drugs

newtboy says...

Where are the teabaggers this time? Why have they not surrounded the home and stopped the seizure?
It sounds like they'll win their lawsuit against the city, have their property returned, and get a bunch of taxpayer money for their trouble. It sounds like an obvious over-reach, since the cops/DA have no proof that the home was built with, or purchased with illegal funds.
More "legal" institutionalized theft. Don't stand for it.
DO make a complaint to all your reps, local, state, and federal, and tell them if they don't move to fix this issue they will lose your vote in 2 months (or when their next election comes around) and create a vocal critic with an issue near 100% of the public agrees with no matter their political affiliation. Contrary to the video poster's past comments, well worded, well thought out complaints with follow through often DO get results, and even if they don't you'll know you tried the right thing first.
"doesn't pursue forfeiture because the issue is resolved....when a settlement agreement is reached with the property owner" sure sounds like quasi-legal blackmail and/or bribery to me. Why has this not been tried in this case, or did the owner refuse to pay the bribe, having committed no crime?

Hamas to kids: Shoot all the Jews

Spacedog79 says...

Hamas exists as a direct response to the Israeli occupation and illegal settlement of Palestinian lands. They then kick the hornets nest by periodic and blatant bombing of civilian targets, and top it off with taking even more land. I fail to see what other reaction they expect.

Israeli crowd cheers with joy as missile hits Gaza on CNN

Barbar says...

No, instead the perpetuate a state sponsored version of history that says the palestinians willingly left their homes when Israel was founded, ignoring the terror campaign instituted that made them want to leave their homes, ignoring the hundreds of thousands that were literally forced out at gun point. Instead they force their children to participate in a generations long campaign of ethnic cleansing. Instead they relocate their families to settlements, thereby implicating them in war crimes. No, they don't use suicide bombers, they just use bombers. That way they can go back over and over again.

I'm not saying the Palestinians make good neighbours. I am saying that Israel makes for a horrible neighbour.

VonMunchound said:

Israel is so the badguy based on their actions. Like isn't is terrible when they go into Palestine and blowing up innocent people in a café by a suicide bomber. Or like the videos like this that they make for children http://youtu.be/Du638_4NTSI

They are sick people and need to be terminated. Like seriously. Right now.

'But I still think their beating could have been avoided if they'd stopped when ordered' and '"Stop or I'll whip you," then you don't stop and they whip you, you reaped what you sowed'-It's this attitude towards the use of force for control which makes the future of a world government a horrifyingly paltry settlement.

Any sign that the future of the planet is headed in this direction should be met with unified opposition and any force, with creative and coordinated force in return.

Humanity still has the power to deny options which governments (criminal organizations) conjure in back-rooms then offer-up to us.

Israel attack on Syria again.

bcglorf says...

It ends as you say, when one side decides it not worth fighting anymore. Whether in time is deemed one of peace or war is political paperwork. The reality is any nation that sees advantage in fighting will, 9 times in 10, fight.

I disagree with what the expected results are if Israel simply stands aside militarily. Economically, I absolutely wish they'd pursue the framework for 'unilaterally' instituting a two state solution. Stopping the constant expansion of settlements into occupied territory being a big one.

I do not believe history shows that Israel simply ignoring Hamas and Hezbollah rocket attacks, and military build up will lead to a situation where those nations are less likely to escalate their attacks. I do not believe Syria or Iran will stop funding, training and arming those groups for any amount of good will shown by Israel. The truth is, those groups see inaction on Israel's behalf as signs of weakness, and weakness is an invitation to push the advantage and escalate further. Tell me I'm wrong in that, but the evidence is pretty widespread.

But where does it stop? As I asked before, is Syria now completely justified in attacking Israel? Is it justified to attack the United States since the US is transferring weapons to a state that constantly attacks Syria?

All of these scenarios and actions are and would be justifiable in a state of declared war. Perhaps your position is that Israel is in effect in a state of constant war with its neighbors, in which case all attacks against Israel are fair and any response is also justified (although even the just war doctrine doesn't allow for asymmetrical responses). However, that hawkish position definitely impedes any peaceful settlement.

A war ends when one side wins or one side decides it is not worth fighting anymore. Nobody is going to "win" this conflict. Instead, I would rather like to see Israel, the stronger side militarily and economically, be that harbinger of peace and accept the inherent security risks of its position by deciding it doesn't want this fight. It is because of that stance that I am always so deeply disappointed by acts like this and feel the need to push back against those who claim that Israel is justified in whatever it does (even if you are not exactly that person).

You're mistaking me for someone that figures Israel can do no wrong.

The video is about Israel bombing what they claim to be arms shipments from Syria to Hezbollah. I think the story is more than credible, considering Hezbollah's repeated use of Syrian weapons against Israeli territory.

Israel attack on Syria again.

Kofi says...

I know my Middle East history and have no illusions about who is and is not the aggressor. My point is that there is ALWAYS a double standard. That you took this as an attack on Israel's moral standing simply highlights your own double standard.

By the way, the extensive temporary exodus is now 65 years temporary with no talk about right of return, at least not to the people born in pre-Israel Palestine. And any talk of right of return by the Palestinian Authority has been used as grounds for abandoning peace/settlement talks by the Israeli government. Just a little fact check, not a sign of partisanship.
