What if names were farts? Now you know.

I'm not sure that the anus has evolved enough to even produce the range of pitch at this level of speech. I am hopeful though as at my age I am loosing my sense of smell.

Where did you go?

Inky the Octopus Escapes Captivity Like a Pro

Eukelek says...

so either: Inky deciphered the human entrapment contraption plans and had imagined his escape before actually going for it, OR just "sensed" or smelled or heard the ocean close by and knew he had to go in that direction somehow... hmm, I wonder which one it was?

Crash Course - Taste and Smell

MilkmanDan says...

Very interesting...

I'm one of those people who is highly sensitive to perfumes / scents, which is sometimes called "multiple chemical sensitivity". I know that it isn't technically an "allergy", but other than that I honestly have no idea whether this whole thing is psychosomatic (all in my head), "real" but with a lot of additional input from mental/emotional states, completely real and tied in some way to the smells themselves, or completely real and tied in some way to the actual "chemicals" (in a chemistry sense) in the air. All I know is that there are a LOT of triggers for me where I can get one small whiff of something and know that I'm going to get a pounding headache.

Aggravation with that has often caused me to wonder if it would be possible to surgically or pharmacologically destroy or impair my olfaction senses, like what happened to the woman in the video, and cure the headache triggers. If the smells themselves are the triggers, it seems like that could work. If it is largely or completely psychosomatic, it could still work because I wouldn't know that I was being exposed to the smell triggers; one thing that I've considered is that I also get very angry if I'm in a private place like my home or otherwise trying to avoid triggers and somebody wanders in wearing some nasty shit and compromises the integrity of my safe zone. In public I know that I can't control what other people wear so I just try to get away very quickly from trigger smells, but in my own home I get ultra pissed if somebody comes in and stinks it up. I have wondered if that anger exacerbates or maybe even in some cases is the actual primary source of the headache symptoms. But anyway, even if that was the case, being able to cap or cut off my sense of smell would solve the problem.

The only way that the problem could persist AFTER surgically eliminating my sense of smell would be if the reaction is really to the chemicals themselves in the air. And then, that would be worse because I wouldn't have the warning system of smell telling me to get the hell away from perfume counters, ladies wearing the stuff, dudebros wearing shit like Axe, etc.

All in all, I don't actually think it would be worth the downsides. BUT, I must say I've really wondered about it when I've got a pounding headache after simply walking by somebody wearing perfume in line at a grocery store or whatever...

How to Help a Drunk Person Open Their Car

Stu says...

Yes, it's a fruity smell. However, if you can't tell the difference between someone with DKA breath and alcohol, you should have your sense of smell checked. They are very distinct smells.

Fuck that. If I go to my car when I'm drunk ITS SO I CAN SLEEP IT OFF IN WARMTH AND SAFETY.

Some useful info for you to know. In Canada, don't do this, it's the same as getting behind the wheel intoxicated. Even if you have no intention of driving. Intent is 9/10ths of the law on this.
>> ^TheJehosephat:

Unless, of course, you can smell huge amounts of alcohol on his breath.

Another useful tip: Diabetics who are having a high blood sugar reaction have a fruity to raunchy alcohol smell to their breath. Almost like wine, sometimes beer, or other spirits. Telling the difference for most people is almost impossible.

Dolphin Gets Frisky With Woman in Pool

grinter says...

Interesting.. it's not really known if dolphins use pheromones for communication. Although, it has been suggested that males may detect female sexual receptivity using pheromone cues. Dolphins lack a sense of smell (no olfactory bulb in adults), and there is no known vomeronasal organ. So, these chemical cues would need to be picked up by the taste buds or some other sensory stucture.

The male is clearly aroused, but dolphins are so generally horny that it would be risky to assume that his behaviour is a direct result of any cues he's getting from that woman's crotch.

Penn & Teller on the Anti-Vaccination Movement

Fletch says...

Telling that you respond to my tiny, eight word comment, and not to the excellent, more verbose comments of BRM and GSF.

You compared/related two completely different things. While new influenza vaccines are required every year because of new strains constantly evolving, the influenza vaccine doesn't cause these new strains. Yes, science can indeed come back to bite us in the ass, but, so far, vaccines haven't, certainly not in the way antibiotics have. P&T never claimed vaccines were perfect (in fact, no one had claimed it when you raised this red herring). They are simply espousing the ridiculousness of the anti-vaccine movement when taken against the incredible amount of good vaccines have done for mankind, even if the claims of said movement were true. They weren't defending a thesis. They were simply, and succinctly, making a "big picture" comparison of universally known vaccine benefits and claimed vaccine detriments.

BTW, has anybody heard anything new as far as this research is concerned? I damn near cried when I watched this talk. It just blew me away. Then, recently, I read this, which seemed to be something similar. Is quorum sensing just smell?>> ^Yogi:

I never said it was a vaccine. Did you see how I started a new sentence...and I put an "even" there after the ellipsis because it's a different subject related to the vaccine subject. In other words sometimes our science tends to come back and bite us in the ass.

What smoking has become - the IT Crowd

Samaelsmith says...

>> ^demon_ix:
You do realize that in between breathing in fresh air, you're breathing in smoke, tar and nicotine?
I'm sorry, but that argument seemed too silly for me to ignore <IMG class=smiley src="http://static1.videosift.com/cdm/emoticon/wink.gif">
>> ^Samaelsmith:
It's also a good excuse to go outside and get some fresh air

Yeah, my girlfriend thinks I'm crazy too. There is a certain quality to outside air, whether it's ions or whatever, that is different than inside air. Even on a busy downtown street on a smoggy day there is a "freshness" to the air that indoors doesn't have. And I must emphasize that "fresh" air has absolutely nothing to do with "clean" air.

Even though I've been a non-smoker for long enough that my sense of smell has come back and I can more truly enjoy fresh air, I still miss sitting out on the porch and breathing in the cool night air. I know I could still do that but without a cigarette, I can't relax because my mind is constantly thinking that I shouldn't be sitting around doing nothing, I should go inside and do something.

Also, when I would go outside and take a deep breath of good clean air, my mind would think "Mmmm, delicious, a smoke would make it even better." Even I think that's ridiculous, but that's how it was.

eh it's not so bad. I have a very strong sense of smell and my monitor is braile enabled.

In reply to this comment by gwiz665:
Heh, I suppose that would cause some problems. Must be hard to use a place like videosift like that.

In reply to this comment by residue:
well, I am clinically blind, so maybe that's the problem.

In reply to this comment by gwiz665:
Heh, I don't know what to tell you. I've tried it on myself and others where it works fine. It could mean that you don't use your eyes as much for speech recognition. Try watching his mouth intently and hear again.

For me it turns to a mix between dada/gaga instantly if I look, and baba when I don't look. A controlled synesthesia, I think it's super interesting and mind-freaking.

In reply to this comment by residue:
that's a little disconcerting. I watched it again and I'm only getting "ba-ba"

In reply to this comment by gwiz665:
@thinker247 & @residue: I think it's your brains' that aren't doing their job. Might be the low resolution picture or.. other anomalies.

Works fine for me.
