Cheech & Chong: Con Talk

dystopianfuturetoday says...

"At one point in time, space travel only existed in science fiction, but with time and hard work, it eventually became a reality. In present day America, it seems impossible that we will ever rid our country of it's primitive, backwards, sociopathic gun culture, but just as sure as we evolved to be capable of space travel, we will also, one day, gain the wisdom to evolve past our current violent pupal stage.

Maybe not today, or tomorrow, or the day after tomorrow, or the day after that.... but one day.

I know these words might come as an insult to those unable to dream of a better world, or for those who cling to the status quo like a piss stained security blanket woven of rotten flesh and broken bones, but there have always been people whom insist that the world is flat, the center of the universe and mounted on the back of a great turtle.

Evolution is not easy, but evolve we must. If we are ever to have any hope of co-habitating on this tiny pale blue dot, it is the only path forward."

Is Belief in the Christian God Rational?

VoodooV says...

The kid that called Cliff out on how he uses science to make a philosophical argument.nailed it. Cliff dances between philosophy and science at whim. someone nails him down on science, he just shifts and says oh hey, this isn't science, this is a philosophical debate. It's a dodge.

Cliff still doesn't seem to get the difference between trust and faith, even when asking about faith, he used the word trust repeatedly, implying that he seems to believe they're the same thing. which isn't true.

Gotta love how he crouches down and "lowers himself" whenever he answers a question. Because Cliff is so above it all right? Gotta love how he talks in such a condescending tone as if we're all idiots and he's the only one that gets it. Which leads right back into Matt's argument, Yes, you believe, but that's no justification for why anyone else should.

Cliff made all the standard strawman mistakes. Atheists claim God doesn't exist....bzzt. Atheists believe that religious people haven't met the burden of proof. big diff.

Cliff's obsession with literary style is bizarre. I could write a scientific book in iambic pentameter and it has no bearing on the (non)validity of the scientific content. Lots of science fiction franchises write fictional books as if they are scientific manuals. The method of communication is irrelevant to the truth of the content.

Senate Subcommittee Propaganda Campaign 101

chingalera says...

Kind of tired of this bullshit, people putting words in mouths, behind their own ass...
Didn't call Gifford's a retard, sir. I used the same method as the televised segment, the formula of the media's, bombardment-of-reason campaign for the mind, this same usage of words twisted that you are using now in order to misrepresent me.

Referred to this abject insult to my sensibilities and intelligence called, a fucking senate subcommittee retarded, because they parade children and survivors like Giffords here in front of cameras to push agendas by pushing your emotional triggers.

Then, shall we break down the rest of your squeaking expectorate? Trigger words when reason won't break through the haze in your paradigm fired like bullets.."stupid" "NWO", back to your assumption of me having bullied the woman with derogatory, inflammatory insults-Next, close with a fucking insult, based on what?? Your own bullshit.

Break down your own trip, turn off the fucking television and read some Science Fiction. Sharpen your tool while yer at it?

It's so rude to call this poor woman retarded. Also, I don't believe that someone who believes in stupid things like the New World Order gets the right to call others retarded. You aren't exactly the sharpest tool in the shed, chogs.

Everything Wrong With Avatar In 4 Minutes Or Less

QI - Royal Canadian Mounted Police

Payback says...

On the British Science Fiction show, "Doctor Who", the Daleks are the main character's worst enemy. They are small amoeba-like creatures who've created large garbage can-like robo-suits to move around so they can kill everyone else in the Universe. Their movement is not unlike a covered Segway scooter. Stairs are impossible without CGI.

The joke being a horse-mounted policeman would have similar problems navigating a small apartment as a Dalek.

Del Toro casts Portal's Glados in "Pacific Rim" (Trailer)

Fletch says...

I normally love science fiction and shit like this, but this just looks stupid to me. It looks like a super-sized "The Mist". I hope I'm wrong, but... "a portal between dimensions in the Pacific Ocean". Give me a break.

Are Star Trek and Star Wars Mutually Exclusive? (Geek Talk Post)

notarobot says...

Star Trek spends a lot of time dealing with fictional science of how things work, like dilithium crystals or warp drive'n'stuff. If you watch Star Trek for much length of time, this is unavoidable. Star Trek is science fiction.

Star Wars explains basically nothing about how any of their technology works. Engines are things that move characters between locations. No need to explain how light-speed works. Also, it has magic the force for whenever something needs to happen that would confuse science. Star Wars is science fantasy.

And I like them both.

Rocket Launches High into the Air and Lands Vertically

These sorts of craft (and the others being made by the other private companies), just amaze me. It's like watching a Science Fiction film except it's real.

That something that looks like that can actually be stable, and fly, astounds me.

Kids Lose It Over The Ending Of A "Feel Good" Movie

RFlagg says...

Guess they better avoid Bridge to Terabithia... I don't recall why we were watching it without the kids, perhaps they weren't interested, but anyhow that one makes a turn from what one expects from the trailers to what you end up with... Moving to more mature movies, Sunshine was like that for me, great Science Fiction movie and then all of the sudden the third act... um... not like that for me in that I cried, but movies that make a turn in the last act from what I expected (and not in a Sixth Sense sort of twist, but a sudden plot/mood change).

CryEngine3 - Tech Trailer (Crysis 3)

kceaton1 says...

That was som superb and *quality software engineering in there. If this one opens up just like Crysis 1 (the one truly meant for computers, and it's older but smaller brother Far Cry REALLY showed you what this engine has to offer in open-ended gameplay), if you pull down walls, open all the buildings, and truly force you to think outside the box again (back when your gun was usually the LAST thing you would resort too as everything else--every other option was FAR more fun. You felt like a demi-God that was dropped off in a hot zone to deal with insects, until you meet the aliens and the ante is brought up. All that fun you had, NOW it really gets tested.

But, with consoles some of the scope has been killed, like in Cnrysis 2. I hate to say that, but it pisses a lot of PC Gamers off. But, luckily they are still developing basically everything on the PC. But, some changesg I'D like to see are: huge, unlimited outdoor areas (like Crysis UNO), up to and over 100 objects--that is aliens and people plus moving vehicles and things like this that are active in the frame--are supported (with the computing power we have I'm sure they could max out your field of vision), drastically increased object A.I. From enemies to super-graphic-froggies, further increases and even more (as I do know they've added some, like the "smart crumpling" of cars--making crashes FAR more realistic and neat) to the overall Physics system--inevitably I hope it would be the core component to every program element in the game before ANYTHING else happens (basically, it is the tried and true foundational component for the whole show, I would hope with some programmers that know Physics and Engineering--being able to reproduce in-game MACHINES and inventions of their own...--well AND enjoy it, and more programmers that like Physics too, but they are fans of very well done science fiction and comics--that way you have an aggressive "baseline" controlling everything except for a small section which the science fiction and comics crew can come up--I mean if they really get ambitious, eventually, they could add Biology; The sky is the limit!--and they'd add in elements for all the nano-technology, possibly genetic modification (which is just a few lines of code right now), everything the aliens need ( which means there would. Have to be a "theoretical Physics add-on to the full Physics component...

In the future if they just kept developing this Engine to say Cry Engine ver 15.0, just imagine the literal mind-blowing capabilities this thing could do and produce. You might have scientists from every field, even the military, involved in it's development--people from jobs and different walks of life (like a cancer survivor)--across the world inputting their most-valuable lifetime of experiences.

The game may not be Crysis anymore, but maybe a lot of people will finally realize that not only does your game get better with more infomation... But, if you have an accurate enough simulator to life, AMAZING things can be done. We can, all day create craft to fly in, see what fails IMMEDIATLY and the others that produce Hypersonic flight with LOW fuel usage. The possibilities would be endless, and the frog could become a virtual pet.

So I really hope they come full throttle to the PC and create a secondary division dealing with the consoles from the barebones PC Realese. Thus allowing them to push the technology to it's boundaries!

None-the-less I love the CryEngine out of any other for playing a game--a modern game.

Prometheus: a Spoiler-free Mini-review (Scifi Talk Post)

Deano says...

>> ^Ryjkyj:

On the "Alien" release in 1979:
"Critical reaction to the film was initially mixed. Some critics who were not usually favorable towards science fiction, such as Barry Norman of the BBC's Film series, were positive about the film's merits. Others, however, were not: Reviews by Variety, Sight and Sound, Vincent Canby and Leonard Maltin were mixed or negative. A review by Time Out said the film was an "empty bag of tricks whose production values and expensive trickery cannot disguise imaginative poverty"."
-Wikipedia

Well they were wrong. Though I don't see why those criticisms should not be directed at this effort. Having just seen it I'm disappointed that my low expectations were met.

For a guy who claims to base his films in logic, Scott has a lot of illogical things going on. No tension, poor characters, dodgy dialogue at times and an overall plot that simply explains a few things in the lead up to the first film.

Also for a two hour film it's paced very quickly and for the first time in my life I am tempted to conclude this is purposely geared to the attention span of the Facebook generation.
