A Trip Down Market Street Before the Fire Prelinger 4K to 2K scan from best existing film material

This scan of the legendary pre-earthquake film was made from the best existing material at 4K (4096 x 3072) resolution and transcoded to 2K (2048 x 1536) for YouTube. It was scanned by Adrianne Finelli at Internet Archive on October 11, 2018 using a Lasergraphics ScanStation scanner at 5120 x 3840 and scanned to 16 frames per second. Due to the limitations of Final Cut Pro, every second frame is doubled for a playback rate of 24 frames per second, so the running time remains the same. The part of the image that lies between the film preparations is exhibited here for the first time.

Anyone may reproduce or reuse this scan. Please attribute it to its source: Prelinger Archives.

Lol.

Tell that to the makers of “a scanner darkly”.

This wasn’t a color corrected crop of a still photo, it was a complete change of a short film.

Technically any digital photo is cgi, but that’s a red herring…this was digitally altered video, a much higher bar.

If the term is so meaningless, why argue against it?

You exaggerate to the point of hyperbole, which indicates you know you’re wrong. This argument isn’t about any still image ever digitized, it’s about a video digitally altered so much that it no longer resembles the original. Just because it’s a simple process doesn’t change that it’s an image generated by a computer.

HA!

this img wasn't generated by a computer. altered [slightly], yes, but filters ≠ CGI. blurring an img, using a blue filter, or cropping an image does not make it "CGI". you can argue the semantics of if it being "generated" by a computer, but arguing it is means all digital photos, images, hell even text of any kind are "CGI". "CGI" is already a stupid, near meaningless term and pushing the definition to "any image that appears or had appeared on a computer in any way" makes it even less useful. [generally VFX/visual effects is the umbrella term people are looking for. CG is the term if they're referring to rendered assets. this is neither. this poor use of language is a huge pet peeve for me.]

imma ignore the "art" argument because that is regularly a black hole of silly and i don't feel the need to engage that but those painted potatoes more effort than this.

PARK(ing) DAY in San Francisco

Let's talk about altering the Supreme Court....

newtboy says...

Democrats are denied even a hearing for even their centrist picks (Garland) outrageously unconstitutionally, then Republicans pick FAR RIGHT politicos to replace moderate leftist judges. That was new, never before seen in our history.
Sotomayor and Karen are centrists, dumb shit. Kavenaugh and Barrett are extremist far right wingers….Barrett is barely even a judge, rushed in by a lame duck traitorous seditionist and his lackeys, directly contradicting their own excuse for not hearing Obama’s nomination. They actually admitted they rammed her through as fast as possible with the barest minimum of examination in order to pack the court in anticipation of them contesting the election results….admitted it before the election.
Kavenaugh and Barrett are both extremist Far right wingers, political activist judges, who lied in their confirmation, one is a multiple rapist, never investigated, the other a religious extremist with zero experience who said she would recuse herself on any issue of faith, but hasn’t recused herself from any.
Throw down the gauntlet?! Opposition to his nomination centered on his perceived willingness to roll back the civil rights rulings of the Warren and Burger courts, and his role in the Saturday Night Massacre during the Watergate scandal. On October 23, 1987, the Senate rejected Robert Bork's nomination to the Supreme Court by a roll call vote of 42—58. Bork's margin of rejection by the Senate remains, by percentage, the third-largest on record and broke a 142-year record for largest defeat of a Supreme Court nomination. A historic immediate bipartisan rejection because he was totally unsuited, and had undeniably tried to help Nixon cover up Watergate as acting AG by firing the special prosecutor at Nixon’s direction (the AG and deputy AG had quit when Nixon insisted)….*.
Absolutely nothing similar to Obama being denied a hearing for his picks for a year until his term ended….*. Holy shit! What stupidity.

There are far fewer “conservatives” today, the Republican Party is 26% of the population, not a majority.

Yes, they are throwing cases to the packed court as fast as possible before their stolen majority evaporates. I support a 15 justice Supreme Court with a constitutional amendment halting any further additions without a 2/3 majority….add 6 hyper liberals…no judicial experience necessary or even preferred…AOC would be great.

Why bring a case you might lose? Because cases are supposed to be heard on their merits, not based on political affiliation you ignorant cow. You think the Supreme Court should be a political wing of the right, choosing and deciding cases based on political affiliation, not the law, science, common sense, ethics, or precedent….but only when it serves you.

So, gun rights should be up to states? That’s the next step if you win that fight…the constitution dies and states decide everything….as civil war erupts. Great plan, so patriotic. Remember, California is big enough that when they require fingerprint scanners on all guns sold in the state, manufacturers will add them to all guns….when semi auto guns are banned, manufacturers will move to single shot guns….just like auto manufacturers changed their cars to meet our requirements. Is that your plan? Had you even considered what individual states being in control means? It means California becomes the leader of America, controlling the other states by means of our size, wealth, and international clout. Enjoy.

Not like this, it hasn’t. Never in American history has the court been politicized and weaponized against the will of the majority to ignore precedent (contrary to their oaths and confirmation statements) in order to overturn established law and constitutional rights as a political act. Never.

bobknight33 said:

To say that Republicans are politicizing the supreme court is nonsense. Democrats pick left leaning and Republicans pick right leaning. This is not new. Where were your complaints of politicizing when Sotomayor or Kagen were appointed?

But if you want to go there it started with Senator Ted Kennedy within minutes of Bork being picked by POTUS Reagen to be appointed took to the floor of the senate and thrown down the gauntlet.

They may be lean more conservative today however Its been leaning left last 50 years.

The fact that cases are now before the court is because some conservatives feel there is a chance to have their cases win.

Why bring these case before the supreme court if you know you would have a high likely to loose. All the cost time and effort.

WRT to the abortion issue .If overturned it just means that the decision goes back to the states.

Overturning a previous opinions has occurred and will occur in the future .

I looked into this a few years ago when I was thinking along the same lines as you: it looked like a LOT of work. I looked at the printout today and it's fading badly. I'm going to try to run it careful through and optical scanner and see if OCR can read the faint letters and numbers.

Chicago Cop Abandons Woman Being Threatened With A Gun

newtboy says...

You have to make a Hell of a lot of assumptions to come to that conclusion. 1) that he has no camera. 2) that the victim/witness wouldn't be believed. 3) that physical evidence wouldn't prove it was a good shooting. 4) that there weren't other cameras.
It's possible, but not the most likely outcome. Abandoning a black woman leaving her to be murdered on camera is FAR more likely to spark riots and accusations that he would have stayed and protected a white woman.

Edit:police scanner traffic does provide some information. A dispatcher indicates that a man “pointed the gun at (a) mother and (a) father multiple times” and was in the stairwell when police were called.
It should not have been a surprise when the responding officer encountered a man with a gun.

3 people are killed by police every single day. There aren't riots every single day over it. It's not an honest position to claim every time a black man is shot by police it's cause for a riot. That's total nonsense intended to delegitimize a legitimate movement against inappropriate police violence...that's not ALL police violence. Sometimes police violence is necessary...just not >half the times it's used, and usually not to the extent (like shooting someone 142 times).

There's a middle ground between swat teams going in shooting over a nonviolent mental health call and a cop abandoning a victim to run like a coward from an armed attacker.

Maybe if he shot, but not to kill, outcomes could be better....or tried non lethal methods first. Maybe if he followed policy and didn't go to a domestic violence call alone. The one thing certain to not work is turning his back (probably making his vest useless) and running away from the victim and armed attacker. That put him at the most danger of being shot in the back and her being murdered, and it violated his oath, and it indicates black victims won't be protected.

olyar15 said:

But did he know he was on camera? Did he have a bodycam? The only reason the suspect was seen on camera holding a gun was because the cop backed away. If he had drawn his gun and fired the moment he saw the suspect holding the gun, it wouldn't have been caught on that camera because the suspect was still in the room. Then you would have a situation of only eyewitness testimony. And you would have riots.

Btw, Bob... In America, each ballot has an individual ID number that the scanners read. It will not tally the same vote twice no matter how many times it's scanned.
What you claim is happening here is impossible, multiple recounts proved it wasn't what is described in this dishonest Trumpster video. Most likely she is scanning stacks of ballots that wouldn't scan, rejects going to the top bin to be rescanned again until they can be scanned.

How many easily explained videos are you going to misrepresent, get caught misrepresenting, and get lambasted for being dishonest again before you slink away silently again? I'm pretty certain you even posted the videos from Russia that newsmax said were American people mishandling ballots. I know you posted the debunked video claiming observers were removed so they could count hidden ballots in secret.

Once again you show zero interest in honesty, and excuse your lies by telling yourself it's for Trump, so any lie is ok. You gladly repost every insane lie and deception Trump comes up with as if you believe it,but i know better, you just don't care if it's true or not.

So much fraud in so many states.
Just because fake news say it isn't so does not fake them correct.

Because of all the fraud, Congress will have to debate the validity of the electors and probably will end up choosing the POTUS,per law. At least this isn't the first time. It has happened befor.

O.C.- The Florida Of California

Don't fool yourself, it's been in wide spread use for years, mostly behind the scenes (but publicly at airports and larger events). It makes me want a scramble suit (see A Scanner Darkly).
Since we are already under AI surveillance, more daily, it might as well work for the good of the public, no?

Thanks...I have yet to hear anyone else make the comparison. Obviously I knew who typhoid Mary was....I'm glad to know someone else did too.

y'all heard of pandora's box? facial recognition is evil - in every sense of the word - that if it becomes reality, it will become a nightmare.

'covid marys' is a nice term. typhoid mary was a carrier of a deadly pathogen - herself be unaffected - that spread the bacteria that infected 53; killed 3 (one of those killed was the daughter of the woman who hired her as a cook). the parallel is obvious.

Woman Tries To Block access to Apartment

newtboy says...

Granted. As I wrote above, I think it's likely they both were telling the truth....her leash propped the door open, so he assumed it opened with his fob, she assumed he didn't use one. Neither noticed what the other was doing and both assumed the worst....difference being his assumption was she's a jerk requiring no action, her assumption was he's an intruder in her secure building, requiring action.

Because this is a safety issue and there had been numerous requests by management to under no circumstances allow a stranger into the building without using their fob, and he knew that, and all he would have to do is waive his hand with the fob still in it at the scanner instead of force his way past her physically and be rude and suspicious (showing a random fob doesn't prove a bit it's for that building without using it successfully).....for those reasons combined, I put the lion's share of blame on him.

The entirety of the insanely overboard consequences fell on her before anyone had even partial explanation of her side.

As I also said, I think she should have called police the instant he pushed past her and just followed him, but she wasn't trying to escalate things like I think he was.

I can't be certain of her motives, but I've stopped people from just pushing into my secure building when I lived in one, blacks, whites, Mexicans, men, women, even kids. I made them all use their key or buzz the apartment they were visiting. Had anyone acted like he did, pushing in like a burglar, I would not have been nearly as calm and composed as she was, even if they were a white child....they steal too.

I'm glad you think the reaction as overboard, at least we can agree this didn't warrant death threats on either side.

ChaosEngine said:

It's kind of impossible to take any kind of sensible position without knowing the context of both sides.

Just because she's married to a black guy doesn't mean she doesn't have a bias against other black guys. There are plenty of studies that show even other black people have an unconscious bias against black dudes. It's not just personal, it's cultural and systemic.

So yeah, maybe he wasn't "reasonable" and maybe he didn't feel like being reasonable. Maybe he'd had a shit day and didn't feel like being interrogated on the way into his own apartment.

He said he had a key fob and even showed it to her. You can clearly see it in the video.

And I can think she was in the wrong without condoning death threats against her.

How to Read Barcodes

I work for a POS vendor and barcode scanners/printers are the bane of my existence. There are a lot of different types of barcodes and not all scanners will read all barcode types out of the box. Then you have to figure out what barcode type it is....
