The Rachel Maddow Show: Apocalypse Now?

Asmo says...

Uh huh, the have's sharing their wealth with the have nots (ie. charity, something strongly encouraged by one Mr. Jesus Christ) is a sure sign of the end times.

Ya know, I don't particularly believe in much of anything but I'm going to laugh my ass off if Christianity is right because I get the very strong feeling that "our Lord and Saviour" is going to be a tad pissy with these morons who use his name to justify their bigotry and fear.

Roll on the rapture imo.

Atheists launch bus ad campaign in UK

spoco2 says...

>> ^Xax:
Yes, if by awesome you mean childish and petty.

Why is this childish and petty pray tell? It says 'probably', it gives a positive message, it doesn't promise an afterlife in eternal hell like the others. It doesn't espouse it's views to be THE right views... it just presents a thought and says be happy.

That's it. If religious people get annoyed by this then why can't us atheists get really annoyed at ALL the religious signs and bumper stickers and the like that say the 'lord is our saviour' or the like? Hmmm? Why can religion have those but us not have some light hearted ads like this? They're non combative, non aggressive, non threatening (unless you're super insecure in your faith)... so really, what is your problem?

A simple question (Religion Talk Post)

mauz15 says...

I was raised Catholic, but found it insufficient, then became atheist, and also found it insuffieicent. Now I am Agnostic so in the case of trying to pick who I will pray to then I hit a wall, because I find my current knowledge about reality not enough for me to even determine the existence of God, not a christian god or a greek god or an egyptian god but the central idea of God withouth the religious filter.

And I think even If I found one of those figures more favorable over the others I would not pray to them anyways. I never liked the idea of asking for stuff or trying to talk to a methaphysical being by using physical means. (makes no sense to me to do that)

Many, not all but a number of those people, Christ, Buddha, Allah, etc are still a part of society for a reason, because they have said powerful or influential ideas regardless of whether or not these people are somehow sacred.

So I just try to focus on what their ideas were, I dont care (at least at this point) about picking a side, I don't think is even a good thing to do.

Many of them mean someting to me, in the sense that I find their perceptions of the world worth looking at, at least to understand why people go as far as attaching faith to them. But I refuse to just concentrate on one of them or just on the main ones, that's why I look at them in a philosophical sense so that I can juxtaspose them with philosophers. Just by doing that you can tell how Buddha said many of the things Jesus said waaay before he even showed up, so the 'wisdom' of jesus is nothing new nor revolutionary. And then compare how Socrates presented his ideas in comparison to those two? He does a much better job in my opinion. But I would have never came to these conclusions if I had chosen to just pray to a single one.

But I cant be a perfectly objective person, there is always some bias and in my case it would be towards Buddha. Mainly because if you think about it, he never declared he was a supreme being and he said:

""Be an island unto yourselves; be a refuge unto yourselves; seek no refuge in others."

So to pray to him or "seek refuge in buddha" makes no sense! I really don'tunderstand why people pray to Buddha. Is like they did not read what he said!

This quote explains it better than me:

"To depend on others for salvation is negative, but to depend on oneself is positive." Dependence on others means a surrender of one's effort."

"Be an island unto yourselves; be a refuge unto yourselves; seek no refuge in others."

These significant words uttered by the Buddha in His last days are very striking and inspiring. They reveal how vital is self-exertion to accomplish one's ends, and how superficial and futile it is to seek redemption through benignant saviours, and crave for illusory happiness in an afterlife through the propitiation of imaginary gods by fruitless prayers and meaningless sacrifices.

So to sum up, faith/prayer is not my thing, at least at the moment. I prefer to just learn as many sides as I can, compare them, and see if there is any pattern among the things they have said.

I could care less if they are "holy beings" or not.

Why Atheists Care About YOUR Religion

>> ^klaqua:
Just proves that if you make shit up, make a video with cool music, show some cleavage and state things as fact (that are obviously not fact), you too can have a fan club and be hailed as hero.
Hitler could not be mistaken as and was not a Christian. His god was nationalism and the hate for the Jews. A hate that had no background in religion but common street rhetoric of the time. Someone had to be blamed for the loss of the first WW.
The much praised enlightenment and the "discovery" of evolution was much more an idea from which Hitler took it's page. Hitler used Evolutionary Theory to Justify the Holocaust. http://www.straight-talk.net/evolution/hit.htm
You can deny the facts but does not make them true!
http://www.icr.org/article/285/
Now that is just one of the 'facts' that are beyond wrong. Research the crusades and some of the wars you mentioned and you will find that while people call them self "religious" doesn't make them so.
Grow up and research your "propaganda".

Wow, there are so many errors in your argument, it's kinda funny.

First of all, your first source that you site to argue that Hitler used evolution to justify the Holocaust comes from a far-right Pentacostal Christian website...this is the website that also decries the seperation of church and state and describes abortion as "The great American holocaust"... not exactly a balanced viewpoint there. Your other "source" is just as bad - 'The Institute for Creation Research'...c'mon dude, seriously? You're going to need a lot more than that to convince me.

Let's set a few facts straight here:

1) Hmm...#1...oh yeah, Hilter was a deeply devout Catholic! How about some quotes, yes?

"I say: my Christian feeling points me to my Lord and Saviour as a fighter. It points me towards the man who, once lonely and surrounded by only a few followers, recognized these Jews and called for battle against them."

and

"I am deeply moved to perceive that his tremendous struggle for this world against the Jewish poison was most profoundly marked by the fact that he had to bleed on the cross for it..."

2) The Nazi party was officially Christian and the majority of members were Christian! Their political policy was to make Christianity the state religion of Germany.

3) R0SENCRANTZ is right. Pope Pius XI signed, and Pope Pius XII negotiated, a concordat with Hitler that gave the church immunity while they supplied the Nazis with money and legal protection for their acts. Pope Pius XI also signed a similar one with Benito Mussolini.

4) Some of the most antisemitic European political and social movements of the 1930's and 1940's were Christian parties.

5) The role of atheists and freethinkers during that time? Well, only 1.5% of the German popluation was self-proclaimed as such, and as stated by Stewart W. Herman Jr, an American clergyman who lived in Nazi Germany during the rise of Hitler, "The athiests may immediately be discounted as exercising any perceptible influence on German religious thought today...[their influence] has been suppressed completely by the new regime which places 'godlessness' in the same category with anarchistic Bolshevism."

This was mostly taken from an article by William Sierichs, Jr., an editor for a newspaper in Louisiana. He has a degree in journalism from LSU. The article is not online, but a similar one can be found in 5 parts from a professor in sociology at the University of Wisconsinhere.
Critically acclaimed books by professors in sociology, history, and anthropology contributed to this article. Authors such as:

The Death of Alan Turing

berticus says...

"As the pivotal intellect in the breaking of the German Enigma codes, Turing arguably made a greater contribution to defeating the Nazis than Eisenhower or Churchill. Thanks to Turing and his 'Ultra' colleagues at Bletchley Park, Allied generals in the field were consistently, over long periods of the war, privy to details German plans before the German generals had time to implement them. After the war, when Turing's role was no longer top secret, he should have been knighted and feted as a saviour of his nation. Instead, this gentle, stammering, eccentric genius was destroyed, for a 'crime', committed in private, which harmed nobody. Once again, the unmistakable trademark of the faith-based moralizer is to care passionately about what other people do (or even think) in private." -- The God Delusion, by Richard Dawkins.

What other nations have done, what other races have done
Then you yourself shall die.

Jamie Oliver shows Schoolkids how Chicken Nuggets are made

gorillaman says...

These are nutritionally viable pieces of meat that would otherwise be wasted. It's only the irrational 'ick' factor that's keeping people from eating them. Chicken nuggets are just a modern extension of the sausage, providing for efficient and economical butchery.

Jamie Oliver is teaching irrationality and inefficiency, all the while being applauded as the saviour of British schoolchildren.

Videos are also hitting the Top 15s with 21-ish votes. Everyone's celebrating the birth of our Saviour or something this week.

We generally avoid adding the *music tag just because there's a good soundtrack to go with an unrelated video... but the song is so cool I'm slapping the tag on. What song is this? Ah, sweet end credits - "Pendulum - Slam"... I don't know who that is, but cool.

Heh, 'clownboat'.
