It could have to do with dynamic breaking, but that doesn't make sense, you want maximum field coupling for that energy transfer.

What I believe they are doing is the actuator pushes the windings further away from the rotor. What that does is reduce the coupling, and hence the back EMF. So I believe this is a way to get faster RPM then the 100% of a DC motor. So this is a way to make a DC motor with high torque at low RPM and then widen the RPM range by ??? to increase the top speed. It's really useful when you consider the lack of transmission on these solar cars.

I'm guessing that the significant bit is when the array of electromagnets changes position. (After 10s, when the RPM really ramps up.) I'm guessing that the motor is changing the field to make it more efficient or powerful at high RPMs.

It still had some RPM left I suspect, that flame was way to red, should be a blueish at full afterburner levels. Very awesome though

thankfully for pilots, also a fuckload more stable with that center thrust.

To check this we can look at the velocity of the tips of a blade, and compare with the speed of sound to see if a sonic boom will occur. According to Wikipedia, common modern wind turbines have a blade radius of 20 to 40 m. Taking an average of 30 m:

velocity = rate of rotation x radius
speed of sound = 343 m/s
radius = 30 m

rate of rotation where the tips are approaching the speed of sound = 109 rpm
This is much greater than the common operating parameter of 10-22 rpm

For the worlds biggest turbine (according to Wikipedia), r = 63 m
rate of rotation where the tips are approaching the speed of sound = 52 rpm

So it does pose a problem for really big turbines, but in general can be avoided for average turbines. Also, note that with any wind speed the required rotation rate will be slightly lower, since the velocity at the tips will be the combination of the wind and the rotating speed.

Turbos dont whine at such low speeds or even when standing almost still. Even sequential turbo setups (which start at low RPMs) dont whine like that. Its definately a supercharger, since you can hear how the sound is directly dependent on the revs. Turbos are also much higher pitched. Also, turbo charged cars are far harder to drive in such maneuvers anyway. Much less predictable.

Suppressing fire. You hear that gun, you run. There's no two ways about it. Not to mention that what it really has a stunning effect on is light armored vehicles.
