The surfer not considered hot enough for sponsorship

ChaosEngine says...

@newtboy yeah, but that ad was specifically for a surf competition that Roxy was sponsoring. It took a lot of flack at the time for being demeaning to women surfers and inspired this awesome parody.

@Babymech of course teachers and civil rights activists (and most importantly software developers ) should be paid. And before that, we should make sure that children have enough to eat, and stop wars and fix climate change and so on and so on.

I don't know how many times I've said this, but just because problem A is worse than problem B doesn't mean that problem B isn't a problem.

No-one tells teachers, activists, etc. that they're not hot enough to be paid (certainly not in software anyway )

My issue is not that she's not sponsored, it's that she's not sponsored because she's not good looking enough.

I get why that is from a commercial sense. There's a definite expectation on female surfers to be attractive (probably because they tend to wear bikinis a lot). I mean, look at this. If you removed the one surf pic, it could be a generic modelling agency roster.

But that only goes on as long as we accept it. There's nothing wrong with attractive women modelling bikinis. I appreciate the female form as much as the next straight guy/lesbian. But it sucks when a young girl with great talent, looks at that list and thinks that looks are more important than ability in surfing.

To be fair, Roxy is a bikini company, so their commercial being focused on hot women in bikinis is what you should expect from them.
I'm not saying you're wrong about the surf industry, just that Roxy isn't exactly in the surf industry.

But really this is no surprise to me at all. The surf industry is pretty adolescent when it comes to these things.

Roxy Music - Virginia Plain

oritteropo says...

I thought I'd heard of Roxy Music, but I'm a little bit too young and had missed that they were a 70s band and thought they started in the 80s... now I have to go and listen to their other 70s stuff

Thanks for the post.

I'm kinda torn on these. On the one hand, that's some pretty *skilful surfing.

On the other, it's kinda sad that surfing videos with women all seem to spend half their time gazing lustfully at girls in bikinis (see the rozy ad for how bad this can get *related=http://videosift.com/video/New-Roxy-Ad-Sexploitation-or-Not-You-Decide)

SPEAK ENGLISH OR DIE

Yellow Machinegun anyone? They don't always wear the school girl thing, but the first album I owned of theirs featured them wearing schoolgirl outfits and SCREAMING!

This ain't new or news. Lamer, poppier version of something that's been around for more than 20 years.

My wife works in fashion, designs for Urban Outfitters, PacSun, Roxy, Quicksilver, etc. etc. Your girlfriend or wife probably owns either a handbag or an article of clothing designed by her. The styles and trends that are in take us all the way back to Cramps/Misfits/Rocky Horror fashion sense, amalgamated with '90s nihilism and modern pop (often hip hop, but in the case here, J Pop) trends.

Nothing new is happening and that makes it SOOOOOO much easier to anticipate the trends and succeed in making people think something "new" is on the horizon. lol

New Roxy Ad: "Sexploitation" or Not? You Decide.

cluhlenbrauck says...

I don't know how many Roxy stickers I see in cars. It's the easiest way to tell it's a girls car.

>"it believes women can be both athletes and sexy at the same time."

sweet. I'mma make a beer commercial with all naked women and defend it saying.

"we believe man can be both beer drinkers and sexual beings"

"Roxy has defended the ad by saying that it believes women can be both athletes and sexy at the same time."

That's valid, if they show'd her being an athlete. They show'd her topless in undies on a bed, and then showering, and then preparing to go surf. It's totally cool for women to look and feel sexy when they want to, but this is an ad and it's obviously trying to get attention by using a sexy young model. If they had just shown her doing some epic surfing, something I a physically fit man can't do, it would be THAT much sexier.

Also not that her face is always out of frame, she's not a person with an identity she's parts to draw the eye.

Huge BAD fan here. The BAD lineup from the 80s (Jones-Letts-Williams) is such a great combo and a culmination of Don Letts' efforts at the Roxy to fuse punk with reggae. And Jones' love of hip hop and Clash alumnus status made him the obvious frontman. 1989's Megatop Phoenix is BAD at their very best. Great band.
