Let's talk about altering the Supreme Court....

newtboy says...

Democrats are denied even a hearing for even their centrist picks (Garland) outrageously unconstitutionally, then Republicans pick FAR RIGHT politicos to replace moderate leftist judges. That was new, never before seen in our history.
Sotomayor and Karen are centrists, dumb shit. Kavenaugh and Barrett are extremist far right wingers….Barrett is barely even a judge, rushed in by a lame duck traitorous seditionist and his lackeys, directly contradicting their own excuse for not hearing Obama’s nomination. They actually admitted they rammed her through as fast as possible with the barest minimum of examination in order to pack the court in anticipation of them contesting the election results….admitted it before the election.
Kavenaugh and Barrett are both extremist Far right wingers, political activist judges, who lied in their confirmation, one is a multiple rapist, never investigated, the other a religious extremist with zero experience who said she would recuse herself on any issue of faith, but hasn’t recused herself from any.
Throw down the gauntlet?! Opposition to his nomination centered on his perceived willingness to roll back the civil rights rulings of the Warren and Burger courts, and his role in the Saturday Night Massacre during the Watergate scandal. On October 23, 1987, the Senate rejected Robert Bork's nomination to the Supreme Court by a roll call vote of 42—58. Bork's margin of rejection by the Senate remains, by percentage, the third-largest on record and broke a 142-year record for largest defeat of a Supreme Court nomination. A historic immediate bipartisan rejection because he was totally unsuited, and had undeniably tried to help Nixon cover up Watergate as acting AG by firing the special prosecutor at Nixon’s direction (the AG and deputy AG had quit when Nixon insisted)….*.
Absolutely nothing similar to Obama being denied a hearing for his picks for a year until his term ended….*. Holy shit! What stupidity.

There are far fewer “conservatives” today, the Republican Party is 26% of the population, not a majority.

Yes, they are throwing cases to the packed court as fast as possible before their stolen majority evaporates. I support a 15 justice Supreme Court with a constitutional amendment halting any further additions without a 2/3 majority….add 6 hyper liberals…no judicial experience necessary or even preferred…AOC would be great.

Why bring a case you might lose? Because cases are supposed to be heard on their merits, not based on political affiliation you ignorant cow. You think the Supreme Court should be a political wing of the right, choosing and deciding cases based on political affiliation, not the law, science, common sense, ethics, or precedent….but only when it serves you.

So, gun rights should be up to states? That’s the next step if you win that fight…the constitution dies and states decide everything….as civil war erupts. Great plan, so patriotic. Remember, California is big enough that when they require fingerprint scanners on all guns sold in the state, manufacturers will add them to all guns….when semi auto guns are banned, manufacturers will move to single shot guns….just like auto manufacturers changed their cars to meet our requirements. Is that your plan? Had you even considered what individual states being in control means? It means California becomes the leader of America, controlling the other states by means of our size, wealth, and international clout. Enjoy.

Not like this, it hasn’t. Never in American history has the court been politicized and weaponized against the will of the majority to ignore precedent (contrary to their oaths and confirmation statements) in order to overturn established law and constitutional rights as a political act. Never.

bobknight33 said:

To say that Republicans are politicizing the supreme court is nonsense. Democrats pick left leaning and Republicans pick right leaning. This is not new. Where were your complaints of politicizing when Sotomayor or Kagen were appointed?

But if you want to go there it started with Senator Ted Kennedy within minutes of Bork being picked by POTUS Reagen to be appointed took to the floor of the senate and thrown down the gauntlet.

They may be lean more conservative today however Its been leaning left last 50 years.

The fact that cases are now before the court is because some conservatives feel there is a chance to have their cases win.

Why bring these case before the supreme court if you know you would have a high likely to loose. All the cost time and effort.

WRT to the abortion issue .If overturned it just means that the decision goes back to the states.

Overturning a previous opinions has occurred and will occur in the future .

John Oliver: Democratic National Convention

Baristan says...

I watched the convention live on YouTube feeds and PBS news. The T.V. news version filtered out most of the chanting and used camera angles to omit the protest signs. In the later days of the convention the DNC made a sheet of chants designed to counter the protesters chants. It worked well. Just watch Leon Pennata's speech to hear the background chants from Sanders states(where there were no microphones) start and be drowned out be the Clinton states where the crowd mics were placed.

The walkout in @notarobot's video was real. Hundreds of Bernie supporters did walkout after the roll call. It was not on the same day as Clinton's speech. Some delegates planed another walkout during Clinton's speech but never went through with it. The Craigslist ads are likely fake.

Alex Jones is a lair. He puts out enough BS to distract from anything real. It is disgusting how he uses his website as 'sources now confirm' while his website is just quoting from his show. It's worse than the propaganda network PBS news has become.

Here's the deal, folks: You do a commercial, you're off the artistic roll call, forever. End of story.

jonny says...

Hicks' bit is funny, but it's also complete horseshit. If I can work a shit job for a few hours to make enough money to allow me to take any one of a number of other jobs that I'll love for weeks/months/years, it's not a question at all.

If anything, that's how you know you are on the global artistic roll call. Work hard, occasionally doing shit you hate for obscene amounts of money. I wonder if Bill had ever had a dump truck full of cash driven to his door if he'd have felt differently.

My friend used to have the phrase "Enough money is an oxymoron" written on his wall. I totally know what that means now.

Learning Korean - Please Give Me Coke

MilkmanDan says...

This week I taught my first classes with a new set of Thai HS Seniors (the semesters start at a different time here). I always start out by getting a roster with the students' full names in Thai and having them write their nicknames in English, then taking roll call to make sure I am pronouncing the names correctly. There is no set way to write Thai sounds in English, so there is a lot of variation in how to spell things.

Anyway, one boy on the list wrote his nickname as "Kok". I correctly assumed that he wanted that to be pronounced "Coke", but then explained to him that if he goes with the other spelling an average westerner will probably call him "cock" which is rather unfortunate...

In 5 years of being here I've seen a lot of semi-unusual or unfortunate names and nicknames.

Odd: Dollar, Bible, Bird (hordes of those), Blue, Oil, Dump, Bomb, Gun, Nuke, etc.
Unfortunate: Fook, Fluck ("fluke"), Gook ("guck"), Poo, Poopae, Dodo, Porn (loads of this one also), Titee (girls name)

The worst and/or funniest one I've seen was a girl who converted her full Thai name into an English spelling of "Titteeporn Suksonmanee". Considering Thailand's ... reputation, that one is particularly unfortunate, although the actual pronunciation of the surname is more like suke-sawn-MA-knee.

On the flipside many western names translate phonetically into rather unfortunate things in Thai, or are commonly mispronounced into something bad in English. For example, Jim means "pussy" in Thai, Chris will usually be pronounced by Thais as "Clit", etc. etc.

MSNBC Host Hits Dems on Patriot Act Hypocrisy

NetRunner says...

@blankfist upvoted. I'm not at all pleased about it.

In terms of the "my party is better than yours" contest, here are the vote tallies:

Senate Nays by party: 19 Democrats (I'm including Bernie Sanders in there), 4 Republicans.
House Nays by party: 122 Democrats, 31 Republicans.

I'd love to grow those numbers on both sides of the aisle.

Some notable names in both lists:

Pelosi: Nay
Weiner: Nay
Kucinich: Nay
Franken: Nay
Leahy: Nay (and filibustered with Rand, not that the press or CFL mentions that)
Brown: Nay

I want more Democrats in Congress like them, and fewer like Ben Nelson, Joe Lieberman, and Joe Manchin (all voted Aye).

Oh, and this came up in one of my google searches in trying to find those roll call lists: http://irregulartimes.com/index.php/archives/2011/05/28/tea-party-roll-call-may-2011-patriot-act/

Looks like the House Tea Party caucus voted overwhelmingly in favor of renewal.

Dems: "Over 10" threatened with violence re: Health Care

NordlichReiter says...

No in the dark ages I think they just went straight to killing people. And Liberal meant something other than what Liberal means today.

But then again, arguing with both sides on this is ridiculous. The criminals will out, and I hope they are caught before they make stupid mistakes.

Education would go a long way with these types, they fall right into the rabid fox news watching stereotypes that are created for them.

Here's the roll call.

Here is how Wikipedia describes Classical Liberalism, and Modern Liberalism.

Classical Liberalism:

Classical liberalism is a political ideology that developed in the 19th century in England, Western Europe, and the Americas. It is committed to the ideal of limited government and liberty of individuals including freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, and free markets.[1] Notable individuals who have contributed to classical liberalism include Jean-Baptiste Say, Thomas Malthus, and David Ricardo. There was a revival of interest in classical liberalism in the 20th century led by Friedrich Hayek, Milton Friedman and other economists.[2] [3][4]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classical_liberalism

Modern Liberalism:

Modern American liberalism is a form of social liberalism developed from progressive ideals such as Thomas Paine's asset-based egalitarianism, Theodore Roosevelt's New Nationalism, Woodrow Wilson's New Freedom, and Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal.[1] It combines social liberalism and social progressivism with support for a welfare state and a mixed economy. American liberal causes include voting rights for Black Southerners, freedom of choice for women, and government entitlements such as education and health care. Keynesian economic theory plays an influential role in the economic philosophy of American liberals.[2] These policy stances adhere to the central premise that individual freedom can only exist when it is protected by a strong, democratically elected government that has an active role in society and the economy.[3][4]

Republican Lawmakers are Obedient Sheep

NordlichReiter says...

More two party bullshit.

Look at it this way.

One problem down, a million to go. There's still the FED, Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, taxes, Wall Street and a would suppose a whole slew of other things that the Administration needs to get to work on.

Pat yourself on the back, we may or may not have better health care; that remains to be seen in statistical evidence. I for one hope it helps, even if it only helps a little bit. But I get the feeling it only made things worse.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/mar/22/us-healthcare-bill-passes-congress

The bill is not final, the Democratic House is to pass another with revisions.

Here is a link to the documents. The introduced document and the one that got passed.
http://www.opencongress.org/bill/111-h3962/text

The most important part of this bill to me is Section 501 "Tax On Individuals Without Acceptable Coverage." Which is an ammendment to Section 59b of the Internal Revenue Code. In my mind this is exactly the problem with our system of Governance. They make up a law then they add, in this case, 5 exceptions to the law. Then they add more hoops to jump through by saying what is Acceptable Coverage.

Which still doesn't resolve my problem with the bill, the punishment of those who do not have health care. It is hardly a step forward when the government makes it compulsory to have health care coverage. It is the same as forcing everyone to have a gun, eat a certain diet, or have sex in missionary under the coercive punishment of taxation; moreover in drastic cases civil litigation, and prosecution.

With all due respect to the other parts of the bill that put restrictions not allowing care for preexisting conditions, discrimination of abortion, and any other good part I missed, this bill and the voters can get fucked. Damn the republicans for not working to revise section 501, and damn the democrats for letting that pass. I guess we never really had freedom of choice.

AFAIK channel names can not be changed but they can be deleted.

Agree with the redundancy of the viral channel

Wildwestshow is for country&western music and western films

Grindhouse is indeed very small: it is always coupled with cinema and horrorshow and sometimes sexuality..which is not very handy when the max. is 7 channels

Mystery is small but has a right to exist: people should post more mystery films or unexplained phenomena..
