Nirvana vs Rick Astley: Never Gonna Give Your Teen Spirit Up

Asphyxium913 says...

True, but it isn't as bad as it seems. Listen...

This version of SMTS is a fan re-made version that has its tuning adjusted for Rick Astley's song. The default Nirvana tuning is to tune a half step down I believe, and this one is tuned higher.

Listen to 1:14 - 1:40. During the "I...... just wanna tell you how I'm feeling" the "I" part is off key to the riff, but the rest of it fits pretty well. Imagine that "I" being lower pitched and to the riff and you'll see what I mean.

This tuning is likely the closest thing to lining up with this song possible.

Hmm.. Certainly works better than the anti-harmony of that other sift. I still feel as though it's lacking the more significant (and better) bits of the Daft song. Merely putting the "lyrical instruments" from one song into another doesn't automatically make that second song better. I just feel it was an unfair balance of the two pieces. Better than the weirdly-sounding sift, though, certainly.

Despite how often as you are apparently disappointed with other people's recommendations, I feel I must counter-share:

I feel as though both halves of this mashup contribute to each other in some meaningful way.

Just sifted a Nirvana mashup that actually works:

You might like this one.

Not a fan of Nirvana, so this is a vast improvement. The tonality is a little off in places, but then Nirvana was never known for harmony. It is interesting to see how well they fit together, though.

Nirvana vs Rick Astley: Never Gonna Give Your Teen Spirit Up

Teen Spirit is in F minor and Rick Roll is in Db Major, which are related keys, so they actually do share the same set of scale notes. There are a few spots with the harmony and melody clash quite a bit. Fun stuff. Here is another Teen Spirit mashup: http://www.videosift.com/video/Best-Mashup-Ever-Smells-Like-Bootylicio

Asphyxium913, I'm guessing this is a Karaoke recording of Teen Spirit, and a pretty decent recreation at that.

You generally can't just throw a major melody onto a chord progression in the relative minor, as shown by how this video's sound turned out. It isn't just that the root isn't the same as the chord progressions, but you also get a lot of clashing notes since the vocal melody was written assuming an entirely different chord progression.

...I just don't like it, lol.

I don't think there's a person on this planet who can say, with certainty, that these aren't the lyrics Cobain is singing.

Actually, I've never had much of a problem understanding the lyrics to Smells Like Teen Spirit. A few bits here and there were tough to make out, but the single for Lithium helpfully came with a sheet listing the fully lyrics to the whole Nevermind album - should have been included with the album originally I suppose, but I don't think they expected anyone to care (ie, they had no idea it would blow up like it did).

"Tourette's" on the other hand is completely unintelligible. That could very well be a cover of Mr Astley's masterpiece.

Thanks for all the votes btw - I never expected this to hit the top 15. People's tastes here continuously surprise me.
