Nothing Heals Racial Divides Like Eating Tacos

ulysses1904 says...

Not sure if you misunderstood me, as I wasn't knocking or "censoring" Speedy Gonzalez. FWIW, the Warner Brothers cartoons from the 1940s and 1950s are the quality standard that I compare all over animations to. And no doubt some of them have blatantly racist or ethnically insulting scenes and characters, which were viewed as acceptable back then.

My comment was that it would fit right in with the mayor's taco remark, to act like being a fan of Speedy Gonzalez would help build bridges to the modern day Latino community in East Haven.

Wow....just....wow. I live near New Haven and have read about this quote but this is the first I'm seeing the footage. At least he didn't say "I might have tacos and then watch a Speedy Gonzalez retrospective".

Don't you knock Speedy Gonzales! That dude rocks! He's won at least one more Academy Award than any of us ever will. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speedy_Gonzales
The world of America was bigoted and rife with ethnic stereotypes at the time. Those views were just as wrong then as they are now, but to censor the mouse is the same as pretending that those views never existed. Disney pretends that "Song of the South" was never made, but that's a mistake as well.

Poll on America's Opinion of Socialism

Porksandwich says...

I don't live in California so
1) I am not sure what you are talking about besides everyone suffering economically since 2007-2008.
2) I am not saying socialism is the way to go, but ignoring it's merits and continuing down a path that is not producing desired results is not helping the situation.
3) How do you insulate yourself from society when by interacting with it, you are apart of it?
4) Who is that second line directed at? I can assure you I did not cause any permanent decay of society. People with money and power are the culprits you seek, not your neighbor.
5) I am not sure of the time period when you classify California as one of the nicest places in the world. Many people probably think it's still pretty nice given it's mild weather.

>> ^chilaxe:

>> ^Porksandwich:
So what socialism experiments plunged California into the state it is in now that didn't exist when it used to be one of the nicest places in the world?

>> ^chilaxe:
@Porksandwich
The US does experiment with socialism.
Here in California, we have some of the highest taxes and most liberal policies in the country, but our academic scores are now literally the dumbest in the country and the state is on the verge of bankruptcy.
If that's what you mean by socialism, nobody wants more of that. People would much prefer how California used to be (one of the nicest places in the world, with high academic scores and a globe-leading economy).

If smug liberals can't figure what they did even in retrospect, these discussions are a waste of time.
Focus on building your own life and career to insulate yourself from the permanent decay of society you caused.

Jaysus lads, is there really any arguing with "American interventionism gets people killed"?

Though it reminds me of the problem the arguments for the stimulus package face in retrospect. Well sure, things are bad but they'd be a heckuva lot worse if we hadn't had the stimulus.

World War 3 starting this week (Worldaffairs Talk Post)

xxovercastxx says...

>> ^dag:

I remember in 7th grade, my geography teacher - Mr. Reekie, (who was also the JV football coach) told us all that World War 3 was about to start in Poland because of Lech Wałęsa's solidarity movement. It scared the shit out of me, and stuck with me as a small scar - even as a 42 year old man.

I remember being similarly (and in retrospect, needlessly) terrified in 85-86 when the shit was going on with Libya (culminating in bombing). I would have been 6-7 at the time. I remember riding the bus home after school, looking out the window at the horizon, and being afraid that one day bombers were just going to come screaming overhead and destroy/kill everything and everyone. I didn't understand that Libya was a tiny speck of a country with an insignificant military, and I didn't understand that a tiny backwoods town in upstate NY would not be a valuable military target.

Yep, was fun.

In retrospect, orycteropus would've avoided that problem, and been a bit cooler, but I didn't think of it. The likely alternatives from your region (excluding immediate surrounds) of Erdferkel, oryctérope, maasika, or jordsvin would also have avoided the problem... but I'm as happy to leave them to others.

Looks like fun!

I cannot read @oritteropo's name as anything other than otterpoo for some reason. My brain it breaks.

mana shield, teleport, chain lightning... so much fun.

We clocked endless hours on Diablo via DCC. Nothing was as hilarious as a chain-lightning-frenzy down in hell. Blowing through an entire inventory of full mana potions in a minute -- awesome.

Good times. I wonder if D3 will be fun too. I question myself if I will have time to play it.

IPX was pure madness. No more 1-on-1, no more shifting gaming rigs around. Only the neverending search for the bloody hub. Those boxes have a tendency to be everywhere when you don't need them, and nowhere when you need them. >> ^ant:
Oh yeah, I remember that! Good old serial cables. I remember using InterLink, LapLink, etc. with it and parallel cables through LPT1 ports. Then, came along LAN like through IPX/SPX before TCP/IP got popular.

IPX/SPX was annoying. I remember Westwood RTS games wanted it for LAN! Ugh!

Nope, direct cable connection. Oldschool, serial port to serial port. Internet access was more expensive than hardware back then, so everything had to be done "in house".

Edit: just checked, the null modem cable is still in my bag of spare cables and adapters. Haven't used one since we played Outlaws in '97.>> ^ant:
