Bill Maher: The United States of You Don’t Wanna Know

GenjiKilpatrick says...

Swear everyone on the sift has shit logic.

Define "small fanbase".

You think that providing thought provoking political satire to innumerable crowds of strangers over 35 years as a comedian..

Acquiring and maintaining two relatively popular sociopolitical panel discussion shows for over 20 years..

And creating a documentary entitled Religulous with the express purpose of calling on our society at large to question their own religious convictions..

ISN'T effective or engaging..?

Yet Jon Stewart..

The same Jon Stewart who has explicitly stated that he's doesn't wish to be considered some political figurehead.

And whose Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear - while rather large and somewhat inspiring - was PURPOSEFULLY meant to be neutral..

Not leaning to one viewpoint or another and, thereby, basically useless and ineffectual..

is some sort of generational-change messiah by comparison?

OR! @Lawdeedaw & @ Truckchase..

Do you just not like Bill Maher and think Jon Stewart is "cooler"/funnier..?

Because that definitely what it seems like..

Effective at making a small, angry fanbase feel feelings <> creating change by engaging the masses.

Rally To Restore Sanity - Closing Speech

Dignant_Pink says...

so wait, you're saying that you'd be happier if, say, keith olbermann had a rally and nothing but radical leftists showed up, rather than stewart taking a step back and looking at things in a different light? i guess i forgot that the rally was a left vs right battle.

Aw - he took off his clown nose. :yack: Am I supposed to agree with him when he wipes his face-paint long enough to wag his finger at the media he's a part of? If he equally targeted the left and right then he might have had a point. Sadly, he's just another left-wing apologist who uses sarcasm instead of shrillness. He isn't deep enough to be profound, and IMO he isn't brave enough to be an commentator. He's a coward who slaps his clown mask on as armor the second that specifics come up. Otherwise he'd actually have to STAND for something, and that wouldn't much appeal to his audience of self-congratulatory faux-hipsters. Such mealy-mouthed, small-minded twerps find actually taking a position to be distasteful because then it requires them to actually THINK about what they believe in. Rather than go through such a difficult exercise, they are content to point fingers at others who are more intelligent and courageous than themselves and point out THEIR flaws. Natually Stewart appeals to such people, because he reflects their cowardace and smallness.
As far as crowd sizes go? I've seen vids of both the Restoring Honor and Restoring Sanity crowds. They were roughly analogous in size.
So Beck was only 87K but Stewart was 215K...

Baloney. Regardless, the stupidity of this argument between the left & right over crowd sizes is ridiculous. Both crowds were huge, and well into the 200,000+ range. Quit arguing over your epeen and just be glad people showed up. One was a 'church meeting' and the other was a Halloween party.

Probably! Were you the person with the witty sign?

Hah! I wish; We barely got there in time to do anything cool. I was on 7th and the only time I saw anything on the stage was when Colbert's paper mache' guy was out there. It definitely was cool to be around so many regular people. We walked past the cops' detention bus brought over for the event after all was said and done, and unsurprisingly the thing was empty.

I can see how this reasonableness offended you and how you needed to express the opinion that had nothing to do with this speech
If you can't see his rank hypocrisy in giving 'the media' a hard time for being divisive and then turning right around to go do the same exact thing on my show then you, sir, are in fetters. Stewart can take his smugness and cram it sideways with walnuts. He does the same crap he's staring down his nose at, and he wants a free pass? I'll let the fanbois, biased cheerleaders, and other zombies slurp that koolaid down. Clown nose off... "Hey - I'm "reasonable...!" Clown nose on... "So now I'm gonna go be unreasonable - haw haw".

All little bitches need to turn off the TV...it's bedtime.

I agree to a point - Jon will hide behind comedy when it serves him, when debating with O'Reilly for example. I wish he wouldn't, he doesn't need to. That being said, I value the message (both funny and serious) he and his show puts forth. Personally, I think the message the we need to chill the fuck out *cough*, see through our differences, and work together is important... and not hypocritical.

P.S. Do I only respond to trolls?

Yes...I can see how this reasonableness offended you and how you needed to express the opinion that had nothing to do with this speech. Perhaps you'd like to go on refuting the things that he said...wanna do that? Yeah I think it's about to you shut the fuck up.

Rally To Restore Sanity - Closing Speech

Restoring sanity and/or fear:
A crowd size estimate commissioned by CBS News and carried out by AirPhotosLive.com estimated the crowd at 215,000 people, plus or minus 10%.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rally_to_Restore_Sanity_and/or_Fear#Cr
owd_size
Restoring Honor:
Anywhere from 80k - 1,6 mil (Seriously doubt that last part)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Restoring_Honor_rally#Crowd_size

Fun fact, the United States Parks Department still uses aerial photography analyzed by scientists to estimate the size of crowds at rallys in DC for their own planning purposes. But ever since they estimated the Million Man March at 400k people, they have been legally prohibited by congress from releasing their estimates to the public.

The CBS news commissioned AirPhotos Live surveys are the only publicly available scientific estimates using the same methodology used by the US Parks Department. If you're going to compare two accounts, compare their estimate of Restoring Honor, 87k, to their estimate of The Rally to Restore Sanity, 215k.

I do find it amusing that the best figure for The Rally to Restore Sanity is also the highest one you will ever hear in the media, and the best figure for Restoring Honor is the lowest you will ever hear in the media. The far right might not be better at turning out people, but they beat the hell out of us when it comes to manipulating perception.
