Completely false. This is simply not true. All consumers are rational insofar as they consciously make choices about what they think is best for them. Whether these choices are correct or not is irrelevant. What's relevant is that all exchanges are voluntary, and not enforced through violence or coercion (as is always the case with government). A free market simply means there is no initiation of violence or coercion. To the extent that there is no initiation of violence or coercion, you have a free market. If by "there is no such thing as a free market," you mean that there will always be violent criminals, then we may agree. This may be so. But just like there may always be thieves and murderers within a society, it does not mean that you should not do what you can to eliminate these problems.

A free market simply means voluntary exchanges: not coerced through the initiation of violence or by the threat of violence. I (and billions of other humans) engage in free and voluntary exchanges and interactions on a daily basis. No amount of your repetition of a falsehood makes these voluntary exchanges (i.e., "free market" exchanges) any less real. In fact, your stating such things will only serve to obviate that fact.

I would say the pastor is an asshat because he made his own insane assumptions based on willful misunderstanding and is convincing others to think the same kind of BS...it has little to do with religion in the final analysis for me, it's about making up BS and getting others to believe it as fact, usually to get them to act as one wants them to. The religious don't have a monopoly on this behavior, it is also not reserved for religious goals, but religions and the religious are all too well practiced at it.

What he was trying to say was that the issue here is not specific to Christianity (or for that matter any other religion) but rather with the mindless repetition of inherited arguments and belief systems (i.e. people not truly thinking for themselves or being able to operate outside of the box they have built for themselves).

Atheists etc. are frequently guilty of the same thing; he was simply suggesting that it's unproductive to reduce the problem to paradigm A. vs paradigm B. when in truth its the very act of limiting ones perception and consciousness to one particular paradigm that causes the problem.

In other words the Pastor is an asshat not because he is a Christian but rather because he is only capable of understanding the world via the adopted assumptions of others. A fault which can be levelled at virtually any system of understanding when practised by those who have not yet understood the entirely relativistic nature of such systems.

This is why he referred to the inevitable banter as "boring and tired". For most it becomes simply "Christianity bad atheism good" (or visa versa or whatever). The truth of the matter is far more complex and moreover is universal to all participants.

Sometimes I catch episodes of The Daily Show on CTV's streaming website. A shorter version of this commercial was running as an interstitial ad on that site -- so repetitively, in fact, that I got tired of it.

When I was in the Army, some guys hooked up five belts to a MG with an old worn out barrel that was to be thrown away, just to see what would happen. It shot cleanly all the way to the end of the 1,000 round belt without stopping, jams or misfires. The barrel was just starting to glow a bit by the end.

What happens is you burn out the threads if you fire repetitively for a long time, but actually melting the barrel is pretty much impossible (and metal doesn't burn morons).

I kind of think its healthy to lie to them so long as its blatantly untrue. Stuff like Santa and the tooth fairy helps to teach them how to think critically, They are after all going to be lied to about much bigger and more dangerous things for the rest of their life.

What happened?!
