I have (self diagnosed) aphasic anomia. I have tried every trick in the book, mnemonic devices, repetition, association, etc. repeatedly writing it down helps me a little, but I have had trouble remembering my wife and my brother’s names…it’s not about not remembering the name, it’s a problem with recalling them on command and getting a blank, which triggers a little panic, which makes recalling the name more difficult, triggering more panic….it’s embarrassing.

The same thing happens to me with words, it’s why I often speak differently and get accused of being intentionally erudite. I know the concept I’m trying to convey, but the words are just lost. I have more trouble recalling short easy words than longer, more advanced/difficult words, so I often come across as “high falutin”, but really I’m just trying to communicate as clearly as possible considering my issues.

It is thought provoking and actually inspired me to look into some of the legitimate points and accurate perceptions, revisit Marx and chuckle at some of the later wild jumps and extrapolations.

Also I was totally mesmerised by the story combined with the images, while it does get repetitive, would be an excellent 45 minute video if the crap could be cut out.

I'd kind of love a PG-13 or R-rated Dora where she still acts exactly like the original show (tons of repetition, asks questions with astoundingly obvious answers, reads the simplest of maps like she's doing calculus in her head, super naive, etc), but everyone else is entirely normal, and reacts to her accordingly. "Swiper, no swiping, Swiper no swiping, Swiper..." "Dora what the FUCK?! He has a GUN, stop saying that shit and give him the key!" They seem to do some of that here (paraphrasing "of course she knows the monkey," "she brought a knife on a field trip"), but Dora also appears slightly to behave semi-normally.

Anyway. I started playing this because I have kids who watched the show some years ago, and I hated having to sit through it. Figured I'd show it to them in an "oh man, can you even believe how awful this looks?" sort of way, and then... it doesn't. It actually looks like a relatively ok, fun movie. RFlagg, I think you're right that the recent Jumanji was a huge inspiration; I doubt this will measure up at all. Oh, and for anyone who hasn't seen Jumanji WttJ, it's actually totally worth watching, with or without kids. Clever writing, and the actors all did a great job with their characters (particularly Jack Black, IMHO).

Loved the movie.

What folks don't realize is that Anteres Autotune is THE standard in the studio. Every pop star and song gets their dose.
That, ultra compression on everything and ultra repetition in production, gone are the days of creamy analog bliss by good musicians, performing a well-written song actually written by the artists.
Now everything is done post-production, and Autotune is 'the sound' of today's pop. The writing is done by teams of "producers" who have mastered today's pop sound and format.

And then LAWYERS.
For hip hop, in the 2000's lawyers began suing the shit out of anyone who sampled old stuff. Today, an artist can use samples, but they must PAY quite a bit. So, only artists with labels behind them can AFFORD to sample. Hence, Bruno Mars can sample everything, and steal everything, then autotune the shit out of it. And wha-laa - he's got a super-produced, money-backed hit where his producers just copy the shit out of everyone.
And in the end, Bruno Mars is the P.F. Changs of music - white appropriation all-dressed up, pre-packaged and sold.

If a website wants to only publish about black on white crime, I'm fine with that, as long as they aren't saying they are publishing stories about crime in general. Specialization can be a good thing, allowing people to become an expert through time, repetition, and pattern recognition. Talking about all the other bad countries and dictators around the globe can be done by others, it's fine to focus your attention on one, which also happens to be the one we have the best ability to change(ie voting)

I find it difficult to believe Ansari is "inexperienced". He's 34, famous, good-looking and funny. Hell, he wrote a damn book on the subject.

Now, even though I've lost count of the number of times I've said this, to be perfectly clear: I DO NOT THINK ANSARI IS GUILTY OF A CRIME.

But I also don't think that behaviour is acceptable. He acted like a total asshole.

But since we're talking about degrees of harm, you can still be an asshole and do actual harm without committing a crime.

Should his accuser have just left? Probably. Does that excuse his behaviour? Nope.

I thought it was pretty clear in the show that he knew she was using spaces instead of tabs because of the sound of her repeatedly hitting the spacebar at the beginning of each line (which depending in your editor/IDE might be done automatically).

They are in a small environment, (loosely?) collaborating on code. He's anal about tabs vs spaces, and can tell that she's using the "wrong" one because of the repetitive (and annoying from his perspective) sound.

Put programmers together in a confined space, and they'll grate on each other over style issues / noise levels / music / whatever. I find the show extremely accurate in portraying the general atmosphere or feel of software development, if occasionally accenting or misportraying some details in the interest of making it good TV.

I've heard this idea espoused many times: follow your passion. An alternative that I like and follow (but not in a social media way) is 'become useful'. Find a useful skill or set of skills, become good at them, contribute to society, and get rewarded in return. This reward can come in several forms such as money, time, or convenience.

Of course, the best way to get good at something is repetition/experience, and the least painful way to get that is to pick something you enjoy doing, so in that respect I agree with the video.

I love programming. I got reasonably good at it. However, working as a programmer sucked much of the joy out of it, so I found a role where I could use that experience but not keep coding. I got good at that, and found a better niche that combined the two skills. I then did the same again. I now have a very nice set of very useful and quite rare skills, and have plenty of options.

I think Maddow's argument "We're about to find out if the new President of our country is going to do what Russia wants once he's commander in chief" is utterly moronic. Implying that withdrawing a few thousands troops will mean he's Russia's puppet is intellectually dishonest. No mention of other actions he could take like reversing sanctions or undoing Obama's punishment of specific Russians after that latest reports that would show that. Or other possible justifications he would have for withdrawing the troops. No, just a black and white yes/no based on one action.

It calls to mind the endless repetition of Republican talking points on fox news. They don't expect their viewer to think at all just absorb a few basic scraps of info and come to a firm conclusion that they can easily repeat like a mantra and block all opposing views because they are so sure they are right.

I feel like this is the result of a downward spiral. It could be the result of so many psychological or inter-personal issues blending together until the repetition of the behavior became ingrained. It is very strange that no one said anything about it but some families are... different.

I was in a relationship once where neither my girlfriend of 7 years or I spoke to each-other for 2 months... we still lived in the same apartment and slept in the same bed. Like I am saying, for me it was an amalgamation of many issues in the relationship emerging around the same time along with having a stressful job that took the brunt of my time & energy and just not wanting to deal with our issues; I went silent, like constant anxiety. Eventually, we broke it off for both of our mental sanity's even though we were still in love with each-other, I doubt we could have lasted 20+ years like that though lol....
