How Do You Refuel a Drone Aircraft in Flight??

Tesla Motors Supercharger Event

GeeSussFreeK says...

Less than half an hour is a lot longer than 2 mins to refuel, even more so that is shortens your battery life with repeated use. You also have to change your lifestyle around that. I can't tell you how many times I refuel in a rush...can't do that shit no more. The range on some of the more traditional EV's are like 70miles. I drive 30 miles a day, so I would have to refill like every other day instead of every other week! That amount of time isn't cheap, this type of car costs you time (see also money). Talk about annoying. Don't get me wrong, this is the tech I want! It just isn't as mature as I would want if I was in the market for a car. And @Jinx nailed it on the head, you need LOTS of these stations for that long a charge time...every gas station will look like a woman's rest room after an event otherwise. This can only be "free" as long as a lot of people don't use it. The capital costs to supply the amount of energy to replace gas is pretty astronomical, overpromising here for sure. Still neat though, let rich people finance the way for EVs still looks like the order of the day

When pit stops go dramatically wrong

ZappaDanMan says...

Luckly there was no other race cars coming down the pitlane. See the snap reaction of the wheel gun guys on the far side, ran straight into the driving lane (I think this was the F1 era, before pit lane speed limiters).

After an investigation by 'Intertechnique' at Benetton's team factory, FIA (the sports ruling body) revealed that the team had been using an illegal fuel valve, without a fuel filter. This pumped fuel into the car 12.5% faster than a normal, legal fuel valve that had a filter.

Edit: Just checked that in 1994: Pit lane speed limited to 80km/h in practice, 120 km/h in the race. Fire-protective clothing for all refuelling crews Burns treatment material in each pit obligatory. Still, I wouldn't want to be hit by a F1 car at 120kph.

Four Second Pit Stop

There hasn't been refuelling in F1 for years, and yes, a 4 second stop is considered pretty poor. Most are around three seconds, with mclaren leading the way with a 2.4 second stop last race.

Wot, no refuelling? No fun! I should watch a race and see what else has changed.

Lots. For example, Red Bull is a top-tier team now...oh, and F1 cars are all hybrids now (kinda).

This season has been excellent fun. There have been several rounds where just the qualifying was as entertaining as a whole race weekend from a few years ago.

I don't actually remember if it was Monaco where the qualifying was more entertaining than the race, but if not then it was easily close and there has been one round where that was the case.

The new rules have worked a treat.

They have to refuel in the garage before the start of the race, and then carry enough fuel for the whole race.

Since the weight of the fuel carries a time penalty, nobody actually carries enough fuel to finish the race flat out, they always have to spend at least some time saving fuel (lifting off the throttle early on corners, turning down the engine etc.).

When the Virgin team first joined, they discovered that they hadn't designed their car with a big enough fuel tank, so just getting to the end with the engine turned down was a major challenge for them until they introduced a redesigned car.

How do they refuel if they don't....refuel?

Looked to me that he was driving tired or drunk. Hope he learnt his lesson.
(also, isn't it funny that women are stereotyped as bad drivers yet I instantly assume the driver in this video was male?)

I have 2 types of assumptions when I see a bad driver when it refers to sexism. If it is a dumb (bad) driver, I assume female (or old person), if it is an asshole (in control, but selfish prick), I assume guy. It isn't always correct, most likely regional, but very correct for where I live (above 50%, which is statistically significant). I am actually keeping a log in the same log book I record my gas consumption. Also record which sexes return to their vehicle during refueling. Results are interesting to say the least.

Penn and Teller: The True Elvis Fried Chicken / Uncertainty

rottenseed says...

This refuels this bitter angry part of me that hates whenever some charlatan writes a book and puts whatever pseudo-science and nonsense they want in it. People will read that book and believe it just because somebody went through the effort of writing and publishing it in the first place. The only potential way to write the wrongs in a book is to counter it with another book, and even that isn't going to work. People usually only read books that support their already formed ideas.
