FLAIRS - TRUCKERS DELIGHT

Razor says...

>> ^demon_ix:
^ The thread on reddit took offense to calling this 8 bit. Apparently it's 16 bit at least. The thread sort of got side-tracked when someone suggested it might be 9.3453-bit.

Sigh... most of them probably have never heard of palettes.

Alot of the 8-bit systems used palettes, meaning while only 2^8=256 simultaneous colours could be displayed in a the framebuffer, those 256 could be chosen out of a far larger range of colours. In the case of VGA, for example, 262144 were available, giving 64 values each for red, green and blue.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_Graphics_Array#The_VGA_color_palette

So reasonably fine graduations were possible even with an 8-bit limit in the framebuffer. Many games of the time would use a custom palette for each scene/map/level, to squeeze the best quality out of each situation.

The only way to successfully argue that this is or is not 8-bit is to analyze every single frame for a maxiumum of 256 colours displayed at a time. To be technically accurate, it could use a separate palette for each frame. Compounding the problem, though, video compression can make it appear that more than 256 colours were used so the original uncompressed form would need to be analyzed. Prolly be someone with too much time on their hands =P

Yeah, and the vid is seriously fucked up.

London in 1927 - Early Colour Silent Film

Croccydile says...

They did not specify exactly what colour process was used on the YT page, I was curious. I managed to do a little research from a page I remember listing various processes for silent films. The credits said Friese-Greene Colour process which in turn is "Biocolor". The alternating red/green frames was obvious to me in the motion sequences as Technicolor 2-strip takes 2 images simultaneously rather than alternating.

Here is the actual process http://www.widescreenmuseum.com/oldcolor/stained.htm and the wiki page for the man behind the tech. Although I would take the "invented" part with a grain of salt from the credits as it seems he just ripped off a previous process and called it his own This film is listed as one of four made...

Really cool to see a very rare colour process used on an even rarer film. I wish there was more of this and other rare processes. Most of it likely has permanently vanished due to rotting away

Is produce from 'Whole Foods' truly organic?

dystopianfuturetoday says...

^I found a middle eastern market close to my house that has the freshest, most delicious produce I've ever had at literally a 1/3 of the cost of the supermarket (1/6 the cost of 'Whole Paycheck'). Red/Green Peppers that normally cost $2/lb are 69 cents, and yellow/orange peppers that can go for as much as $6 a pound are $1.39. There are dozens of places like this all over town, but they can be tucked away in the nooks and crannies of the city.

It irks me how healthy food is treated as a status symbol and sold at a premium at places like Whole Foods and Wild Oats when there are so many dirt cheap alternatives off the brand-name radar.

How Choggie rolls down the windows on his truck

bremnet says...

You folks that are referring to this as a 'redneck' power window are a bit off the mark, geographically and sociologically... Red Green is more Northern Ontario small town / back woods kind of guy as opposed to the classical (or Miriam Webster's definition) of a redneck (" a white member of the Southern rural laboring class"). Red's not opinionated enough or enough of a bigot to be a redneck.

The Problem With Anecdotes

jonny says...

There's some good stuff in this video. There's also some truly laughable items.

My following comments are chronologically ordered with the video. They are not all meant to be examples of "laughable items".

1) He uses the first two anecdotes he mentions in exactly the same way in which he says the characters in those anecdotes used their own. In other words, he comes to a conclusion of the characters' behavior based upon supposition derived from a single experience, not upon statistically significant data.

2) The second optical illusion (moving petals) is completely static for me. I'm red-green colorblind, and I wonder if that's why?

3) "Skeptics don't state as fact that paranormal phenomena don't exist," "No paranormal claim has ever been validated by independent means."
Tautological much? Of course no paranormal claim has ever been validated, because as soon as it has been, it is no longer considered paranormal!

4) When the sunbather that has not contracted melanoma claims that sunbathing can do you no harm, he or she is correct in a certain sense. It apparently cannot do them any harm. This is where anecdotal evidence is in fact useful. If I find that I have an uncanny ability to avoid breaking my bones when I fall, then it is logical for me to conclude that the next time I fall, I won't break any bones. Obviously I can't apply that to anyone else, because it is dependent upon my own physiology, kinesthetics, athletic ability, etc. I'm happy to finally find a video like this that at least acknowledges the flip side of the coin.

I'm not entirely sure this belongs in the 'brain' channel. It is a description, not an explanation, of human behavior. If the 'Mind and Brain' channel is to have any coherence, I feel I must demand that explanation. Otherwise, any video with a description of human behavior would valid for inclusion. The end result is that any video showing human behavior (nearly every non-lolcat video on the sift) is then qualified for inclusion. I'm going to leave it for now and revisit again in a couple of days.

The Political Dangers Of Posing In Front Of A Green Screen.

MINK says...

yeah it was green, and it looked awful, so now you know why they normally use blue.

green clashes with reddy skin tones creating a vomiting feeling in sector 7G of your brain. this is the same clash that makes it conversely easy to delete digitally. blue also works because video is red, green and blue. so is your retina. red wouldn't work so well, because skin has red in it.

now you know.

Elysse, I so second that comment. There's nothing more frustrating than knowing how to REALLY play the song and then have to convert that to Red, Green, Red, Red, Yellow Blue. lol I'm tired of getting my ass handed to me by my friends who can't even strum a real guitar . . . .
