The Brady Bunch - Bad Luck, Come and Get Me!

Beau with an interesting take on the Mitch thing

dedstick says...

All true and you are on point with your assesment of McConnell's record and his contribution to our current political situation. I think that Mitch does recognise the danger that Mr T represents to the Republican party in general though and appreciate McConnell's somewhat self centered concerns. I think Beau, as do I, welcomes any impediment to T's re-election via Republican leaders as a positive. "The enemy of my enemy..." etc

The Difference Between The UK, Great Britain, and England

noims says...

This is mostly ok, but from an Irish point of view there are a few things that made me cringe a little.

Firstly the term the 'British Isles' isn't universally recognised, but I admit any alternatives I've heard don't exactly trip off the tongue.

Secondly, a statement like Ireland "joining" the UK in 1801 glosses over some pretty important details.

Worst of all, though, is the way he pronounces Edinburgh. It's still making me squirm.

Texas man strips down to make a point about vaccination

newtboy says...

Yes, he's making his point quite well.
He's pointing out all the ways they follow the law and rules of civilization, even though they're sometimes inconvenient or uncomfortable, even though many laws are to protect others more than themselves. He's doing it in a way that no one ignores. He's exemplifying the selfish, outrageous behavior they are championing in such a way that they can't help but disagree with him, which MAY lead to them questioning their own actions and recognising they resemble that display he put on.

When did he call them names?

Mask mandates are in place, put there by responsible representatives. This meeting was to explain why to those too obstinate to understand why, not to let them choose.
They have been told hundreds of times by calm reasonable people, calmly and using data and statistics to explain why masks and vaccines are necessary, and the answer was "keep yer govment vaxine urtta mah blud and yer Fouchi facemask off me and mah chilin!"

Only enforcing it when it's absolutely necessary, only where it's absolutely necessary, and for as short a time as possible has led us to wave 4, the worst yet. It's necessary now until the virus is gone, it's necessary everywhere so the virus doesn't have a Petri dish to evolve in and become far more virulent and dangerous, it's necessary to continue wearing them and getting vaccinated/boostered until the virus is eradicated....maybe until civilization falls if we're unlucky or too stupid to follow directions.

I have no idea why this touches such a nerve for you. It seems so obviously proper to most of us, and an excellent way to show them that they already do tons of annoying stuff for other people's safety, like driving the speed limit and stopping at lights and wearing clothes, not starting random fires, etc....all stuff mandated by the government.

Explain please, why that's improper.

Wait....so you say we shouldn't have a discussion at all with anti maskers/antivaxers, because they'll spout some nonsense?!
Um.....no.
You don't convince people to do the right thing by ignoring them when they do the wrong things for the wrong reasons. WTF are you saying?! Don't have any discussions because extremists will take hold and you think reasonable people can do nothing. Only true if reasonable people stop trying to discuss and convince them of reality, which is your suggestion? Um......

vil said:

So he is trying to be clever. But is he making his point well?

Its much like us trying to convince Bob and friends by calling them names, its not going to work.

Mask mandate is an emergency measure and should be put in place by responsible representatives, not public debate. It should be explained seriously and not by anecdote. It should only be enforced where necessary and for as long as necessary. Local authorities should have that authority, just like for other natural disasters.

If you start a discussion, extremists will take hold of it.

Mom arrested after posing as 7th grade daughter in school

BSR says...

Some of the more recent United States Governmental statistics indicate that about 2% of elementary schools in the U.S. use metal detectors, 7% of middle schools, and 10% of high schools. This is a fairly low number, with literally only 1-in-10 high schools utilizing metal detectors within the country. Aug 13, 2019

I understand that "probably" all school shootings have been committed by real students. Students with hatred issues, respect issues, power issues or whatever. She got away with acting as a student and penetrating the security or lack of it. Granted I can't see just anyone getting away with her plan by "acting" as a student but she was able to gain unfettered access.

With 3D printers getting more sophisticated, metal detectors are not a catch all. I also think there can be better ways to recognise mental issues earlier to reduce the threat of would be killers. It's not foolproof but after a shooting there were usually signs of a violent nature of the shooter before hand.

Yes she may be a criminal but she was unarmed and had no violent intentions and was aware of the risks of her actions but still felt more was needed to be done. I believe more needs to be done keeping the public safe from people that want to cause harm just because they have the power to do it. That includes bullies who don't pick up guns but rather create rage in innocent people.

My initial comment was due to @jimnms comment which seemed to imply the woman was merely an attention whore and overlooked what her real intentions may have been.

EDIT: I also think your decision to not have children and perhaps grandchildren could have a HUGE impact on reducing the number of children killed or wounded anywhere in the world. If only...

If true, and she pleads guilty to whatever charges they levied, then maybe, but if she fights them in court that altruistic assumption is out the window and she gets another strike for wasting the court's time (and our money) on a case she knows she's definitely guilty of.

We assume she's being honest and this was just a security test, but more than one mother has murdered their daughter's high school rival. I'm not willing to take a criminals word when they suggest they were only trespassing as a public service, not falsifying their identity to hide from crimes they're planning.

I don't think school shooters have ever disguised themselves as students when they weren't...and she didn't bring a gun sized piece of metal through the metal detectors....so she wasn't testing against how easy it would be for armed intruders, only unarmed imposters.

"THE END"

The only eyes I recognise in the montage are Henry Fonda, Charles Bronson and of course The Man with No Name.

Lol.
I'M not a drunk, Bob. Funny you think that's a solution to disappointment. Nothing like a depressant to chase away the blues, eh. That's as logical as anything else you believe.

BIDEN is losing coherency!?! Compared to Trump, he's like a professional spoken word poet.

Keep dreaming. Trump won't get any democrats, even the disillusioned. They'll stay home. This isn't 2016 when the Democrats cheated themselves to put up the worst possible candidate, Clinton, who drove republicans, independents, and disillusioned democrats to the polls to vote for Trump even more than Trump did, and he still had 3000000 fewer votes.

Higher taxes beats bankruptcy, which is our path under Trump. Funny, 4 years ago and for 8 years before then the growing debt was all important and proof of Obama's failure, now it a nothing burger, but no, you aren't a brainless hypocrite, no, never.

The democratic party is so left that in the 80's they would have been far right wingers.

No, they'll avoid the armed thugs Trump is sending out to intimidate voters and vote by mail in waves. I just hope enough go to the polls or drop boxes and avoid the post office altogether so Trump's main plan to rig the election by decimating the post office intentionally will be castrated.

Trump could win, but it won't be legitimate if he does, and won't be recognised internationally because they aren't duped like you. He's made certain it won't be a fair or open election in every way possible, even ways that are clearly illegal, the world knows it.

Don't worry about me.

You just get a bottle for election night so you can cry you massive loss.
Biden is is losing coherency, mentally diminishing. Un-electable.

Trump will get Democrats that are fed up with their defund police, pro riots, anti cop positions. Not to forget the stupid foolish green new deal, higher taxes and legalize illegals.

Democrat party is so left that no one will be voting for it election night.

They will cause mass chaos with the mail in voting. But will still loose.

I don't recognise the Lord Snoad quote though. Where it's from? Or is it just something you feel personally?

The Rise Of Skywalker

newtboy says...

No, sorry, but Jediism is an established and legally recognised religion. Questioning this being tagged religion is as reasonable as questioning Passion of the Christ being tagged religion.

I thought they strongly implied Leah was the relative Rey was waiting for on the dump planet, making her a Skywalker.

ChaosEngine said:

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but @ant is right.

@lucky760, I really hope Rey doesn’t turn out to be a Skywalker. That would be boring.

I think it’s more likely that “Skywalker” will become a title for a new type of force user.

Prove Apple wrong about data recovery and get banned

dag says...

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

As some of you may know I'm an Apple Fanboy so take this with a grain of salt.

-- was she advertising her services on the Apple Support forums? I can see where that would get you banned.
-- the responses she received on the forum were from other users - not official statements
-- for several years now data on iPhones has been encrypted with the secure enclave. Even Apple can't unencrypt. Depending on the type of damage, it could be very difficult and sometimes impossible to retrieve the data.

With those bits out of the way - I do support right to repair, and I don't like Apple's stance on this type of stuff. I recognise that Apple isn't the company I loved from the 80s - but I still enjoy their products.

Hi Tom, I'm a merchant navy officer who used to work around there, although I never came across this particular light... Sector Lights and Leading lights (parallax) are the internationally recognised marine signals for this sort of use (white light centre, with red and green lights either side to guide you to a safe channel, which i'm sure you've researched and are aware of), but one thing that doesn't come up too often is lines to specifically avoid, and as such there isn't an internationally recognised means of transmitting this with lights. The signal is pointing towards the danger, which is unusual in maritime practice, but it's certainly not a common light and isn't in the IALA buoyage system used for identifying marine hazards.

If it's in a marina, which i think you mentioned, it'll be specifically to stop boats dropping anchor on the submerged cable within the marina's jurisdiction, and it'll be specifically referenced in the marina's or the solent by-laws as an anomalous regulation. (I don't have time to go and hunt it down, but it'll be there as a local reg.) As far as i'm aware, that's the only possible reason for it. It's an unusual solution to an unusual problem. I could of course be wrong...i bring no hard evidence to the table!
Hope it helps
