David Mitchell makes a Feng Shui expert squirm

Jinx says...

To be fair, it wasn't just David. Almost everybody got a shot in and those that didn't looked somewhat bewildered by it all.

Oh well, I've not heard of any feng shui experts claiming that rearranging your living room can cure cancer, so I'm going to put in the "mostly harmless bullshit" column. Also there is something to be said for really good interior design, so maybe that's how he started off before he realised he could charge a different type of client more for the same thing if he said some shit about energy flows.

Understanding Comfortably Numb

dannym3141 says...

That's why Gilmour's solos are so good! Everyone talks about people with insane technical skill, but this... well, it just sounds really, really good. And that's what it's about!

Fascinating analysis of a *quality song.

And the solo damn near brings me to tears everytime I hear it. Such an amazing piece of playing... as he says, it's not super technical, but the feel Gilmour puts into every bend.... it's magic.

Also, it's insanely cool that you can play it in harmony with itself.

Victim Gets Revenge On Bully By Dating His Mom

noims says...

We all get the duality of this. I had a bad feeling, but then an even worse feeling kicked in... I should do a cost-benefit analysis. I already hate myself for sinking into management-speak. But...

Guy on phone: only obvious benefit is lording this over his bully. It feels really good, especially when broadcast. Maybe some residual guilt. Got to take into account that, whatever his original intention, his reaction was from the gut.

Bully: unknown. Depends on what kind of person he is now, years after. Probably angry. Possibly feels bad about what just happened to his mother.

Mother: no benefit. Probably feels raped. Possibly was raped, depending on your definition. Possible shame over what her son did. Comment of "you probably deserved it" could be genuine, or could be severe defensiveness.

Radio station:
OK, I can't be objective here. It's possibly mostly live, they maybe feel an obligation to entertain, they have little control, but fuck those guys. I just hope they apologised afterwards.

Personal analysis: doing the deed isn't cool, given the innocent victim. Laughing about it on the air is understandable, but fucked up. Broadcasting it, laughing, and celebrating the outcome - whoever you are - is disgusting.

4K 60fps Photo Realism With Unreal 4 Engine

ChaosEngine says...

This is a really good example of showing what video game graphics are really good at (static scenes with hard materials) and what they're not so good at but getting better (natural organic materials, humans with complex animations).

That said, as impressive as it is, we are still a long way off "photo realism".

Nerdwriter - How Not To Adapt A Movie

cloudballoon says...

By risk aversion I meant intellectually, not financially. It would be a rarity for Hollywood to give us anything with a deep plot/philosophical in a blockbuster. Heck even a sensical plot to not easy to come by these days.

I don't expect too much in a blockbuster, it's meant to be loud, and fun first & foremost, meant to stimulate the senses more than the brain. A really good plot is an appreciated good bonus, not expectation.

I am glad GitS is doing well. Much more deserving than TF:TLK at least IMO.

And yet all that risk aversion got them a whopping 169 million world wide.
