Herman Cain on Occupy Wall Street

Stormsinger says...

>> ^chilaxe:

Am I the only one who thinks Cain would be better off as a liberal complaining about how life's not fair?

"His mother was a cleaning woman and his father, who was raised on a farm, was a chauffeur... Under Cain's leadership, his region went in three years from the least profitable for Burger King to the most profitable. This prompted Pillsbury to appoint him President and CEO of another subsidiary, Godfather's Pizza. Aiming to cut costs, Cain over a 14-month period reduced the company from 911 stores down to 420. As a result of his efforts, Godfather's Pizza finally became profitable.

That's a pretty slanted synopsis, at least as far as Godfather's goes. They used to be a huge chain, producing top quality pizza at a top price. Now, there are two left in my town...they apparently cannot even pay an amateur web designer to put together a functional webpage (their page is a nightmare to navigate through), and it takes over an hour (and probably an extra call or two) to get a pizza delivered. At the rate they're going, they'll be direct competitors of Ceci's or Pizza Kitchen in another couple of years, if they're around at all.

I think I'd put it more that he made them profitable in the short term, buy gutting the business and selling of anything of value...just like any corporate raider or Wall street banker. No great surprise that he supports them, he -is- one of them.

25 Greatest Unscripted Scenes in Films

While its true that wasn't in the script, it wasn't improv, as they decided to do it since Harrison Ford was very ill and didn't want to do the fight, he said to Lucas, "Why doesn't he just shoot him?" so they decided to just do that.
>> ^saber2x:
A a great mix, but its missing one of the best unscripted scenes, In Raiders of the Lost Ark when Harrison Ford shoots the big guy with the sword, he was suppose to fight that guy but because he had the stomach flu he just shot him to end the scene and the big guy played along with it.

True, and it's my favorite part of the movie.

High Schooler Crushes Fox News On Wisconsin Protests

I want to think you aren't a dick, but to do so we need to get real here for a minute. Are you including the FICA tax in your numbers? Do you agree with the social security raiders? Is the real problem where the actual thresholds are? Because if your problem is with raising taxes on people in the 90k area, I'm on board with you. The question becomes, why is there no support to raise taxes on people that earn over a million a year? Why is there no support to raise estate taxes? Indeed, how does taking away the basic human right to organize and negotiate even have anything to do with a budget crisis, particularly when that group is already prepared to make the necessary fiscal concessions?

I'm currently being paid about 10% of what I could be making. I'm working in the basic science of retinal function on work that could lead to all sorts of advances that benefit you, or your children, or for that matter humanity in general. I could be making ten times as much as a machine vision expert building predator drones to kill people whom most often I have no beef with. That's what you get with your "only spend it on 'defense', and let me keep the rest" attitude about taxation. FWIW, that's where I'm coming from, and that's why it pisses me off when millionaires don't want to give up an extra Ferrari in order to better educate the (by no fault of their own) underprivileged youth. Then out of the other side of their mouth they won't shave the $78 billion from the defense budget the DoD doesn't even want.

Nobody is trying to legislate morality here. You can write off the money you already give back for a reason. We just need to pay for all the infrastructure your business needed to succeed somehow. You're paying less in taxes than at almost any time since WWII. Cut us a little slack. We're barely making ends meet.

>> ^ridesallyridenc:

Why would you want to punish the people that actually succeed? How would it help to take away an individual's incentive to get ahead by taking more than half of their earnings when they do?
In 2006, the top 20% of earners in the country brought in 66% of the revenue and paid 85% of federal income taxes. The bottom 40%, on the other hand /consumed/ 3.6% in tax credits and incentives. Cumulatively, the bottom 60% of earners in this country paid only 0.8% of the federal income tax.
So, if you're making over $91k / year (which, face it, isn't rich), you're considered "elite" and should be punished for your success?

Varying Bullet Caliber Damage

Skeeve says...

This is great. People have such warped ideas of guns from Hollywood mythmaking - though a lot of video games don't help either.

I've seen guys come into the range, fire a 9mm for a bit, then brag about how much better the Desert Eagle is. Then a range officer pulls one out and they realize that it's hard for them to hold it steady, let alone fire accurately. A .50 pistol sounds impressive only until you realize that you only have 7+1 rounds, you can't aim for shit, and the recoil is a bitch. As my favorite range officer put it: "Angelina Jolie [a la Tomb Raider] would have trouble carrying one in each hand, but somehow she is firing two on the run?"

Some movies are getting better, more accurately depicting the proper usage of a gun and actually showing reloads, but even my girlfriend starts laughing at some of the more blatant mistakes in action movies (The Green Hornet has some whoppers).

THEM'S FIGHTIN' WORDS. Seriously, I was obsessed with this movie when it came out. I saw it theatrically eight times, which is still a record for me. I actually bought the soundtrack, which I almost never do. I even bought the music book so that I could attempt to play the theme on the piano, even though my piano playing skills were basic, putting it kindly. I haven't seen the movie in years, so I don't know how well it holds up (I'm almost afraid to revisit it, as I'm fairly sure I won't find it as mind-blowingly great as my 11-year-old counterpart). But I know the soundtrack holds up -- there's an sense of awe and a majesty to it that I just love, and I definitely think it's among Williams' best work.
>> ^shuac:
One of Williams' least inspired scores. Get back to me when they do Superman.
My favorite YT comment: The asian kid in the white shirt with guitar was the best!

Oh come on! It's far too simplistic for me. Boring changes with a weak narrative thread (melody). I don't think it fits with the film's subject matter very well either. I don't hear much awe. I hear something similar-sounding to awe: yawn.

Look at his wins (scores that matched up very well with the films): Jaws, Star Wars, Superman, Raiders of the Lost Ark, JFK, Nixon. Nixon is especially good, so much so I bought the soundtrack. The main theme **IS** Nixon, it's that fucking good.

Anyway, it's a matter of taste and I happen to know you have excellent taste in films. You're just wrong about *this*.
