Billions Lost As LA Still Burns

newtboy says...

Multiple people have been arrested for starting these and other fires in LA. A man with a propane torch was caught lighting Xmas trees and garbage cans that seem to be the start of the Kenneth fire, a woman was caught starting fires near Palisades on the 8th (her fires were reportedly put out, so maybe not the start of that fire) and there’s footage of what’s claimed to be people starting fires in what looks like down town LA tonight.

Bus Explodes In Sweden

jimnms says...

It's looks like propane or natural gas tanks, and that's the safest place for them. If the tanks leak, or explode like in this video, the gas/explosion is outside the bus and goes up. If the tanks were in or under the bus and exploded, well you'd have shrapnel in your ass.

When Garbage Trucks Explode

SFOGuy says...

That seems like a lot of gas...maybe someone was cleaning out an entire garage (estate sale?) and dumped ALL the cans of spray paint into a box and a liquid propane container marked "empty" (jokes on you) and all that got tossed in there?

Someone may have tossed out a pressurized canister of some sort and the trash guys didn't notice.

Those doors/plates flying off were intense.

How fracking works

newtboy says...

Unfortunately, there have at least been numerous accusations that they hooked propane up to the water lines and other trickery to film Gasland, so it does not have a shining clean record of being fair and impartial.
That said, I think there is plenty of independent evidence that water contamination has occurred, and it at least appears that it increases the likelihood of earthquakes exponentially, even in areas that have no recorded activity. At best, we don't know the long term effects, and I think we should be cautious until we do since the possible consequences are so terrible and irreversable.

Fairbs said:

I think there is already evidence of its negative consequences. Check out the movie Gasland. It shows people near a fracking site being able to light the water coming out of their tap on fire. I do agree with your point on the politicizing of this issue (and a million others) and that the truth is probably somewhere in the middle. We are too polarized and there's not enough fact seeking and sometimes refusing to believe the facts. I see the companies portraying this as safe trying to set a belief level and that then allows them to be more profitable through the externalities they create, but at the expense of the public. This has been going on forever in almost every industry and is just a normal trait of capitalism. Not to say that is right. Since you're between the two sides, does that make you a shilpie?

LEGO: Everything is NOT Awesome!

bremnet says...

Sort of... (come on, some geek had to come out and say it). Legos are made from ABS plastic. The Acrylonitrile bit are usually derivatized from gases - acrylonitrile from propylene from cracked propane, and the Butadiene bit more often these days (but not always - depends on your feed stream) from ethylene made from cracked ethane . The 'S' bit, styrene, is produced from benzene (which is very, very bad juju) which indeed comes from Erl, as it is pronounced here in the deep south. Sorry, no offense intended, but what's breakfast without a bit of a science lesson?

how to make a hank (hang?) from propane tanks

artician says...

I want a hang so badly. I would pay full price for it gladly. These are the most beautiful modern instruments I've ever heard.
That said, I've explored a number of the "propane hang" options, and they sound.... interesting. But honestly, and I'm absolutely no audio-snob or musical connoisseur, but they're not nearly an inkling as magical as the real deal.
Someone buy me a hang! Please!

New video of Michael Hastings' crash (26 seconds)

radx says...

Mercs these days are overengineered and full of useless electronics. But they don't blow up, they don't turn into a ball of fire on their own.

It wasn't an LPG Merc, was it? So what's the freaky one-in-a-million coincidence that happened here? Did he happen to transport a couple of tanks of propane in the back?

Fertilizer Plant Explosion

chingalera says...

Jeez, the shockwave...They looked pretty close-This is the best shot of the thing out there-I watched a propane rail car explode inna fire when I was 10 from about 1000 yards away-It was a clean little pop compared to this nightmare-
