How to Make an "Anti-Peh" (Pop Shield or Pop Filter)

gorillaman says...

He bled a lot less in this one than he usually does.

I gave my mum a little sheet of packing foam for this purpose. It works. I've been meaning to wire it onto her mic somehow so she doesn't have to hold it up all the time like a dummy, but you know, the comfort of others is a low priority.

Russell Brand to Jon Snow; "Listen you, Let me Talk"

JAPR says...

Everyone here saying "you can't call for revolution without the answer already in hand" is missing the point. If you come to people with an answer in hand, most of the time they will use their current political BELIEFS to decry your plan as impossible and shut down from the conversation all the same.

This whole "it's not broken, so don't fix it" nonsense doesn't work when it comes to our societal structures. We have poverty in all the modernized, rich nations still. How the fuck is that a thing? It needs to change, we need to change that. Recognizing that need for change comes first. After we've come together and said "hell yeah, we need to make this a real priority!," THEN we can start discussing potential answers.

When you still have a huge portion of society either drowned in garbage rhetoric they've been force-fed since youth ("America is the best! Drugs are evil!") or blindly ignorant of the problems because they've grown up fortunate enough to live away from poverty and violence, you have to bring attention to the fact that what we're doing isn't working first before you can agree that you need a revolution, before you can decide what that revolution would entail.

It sounds like what you're saying is "yes, we need to fix this shit," so instead of complaining about calling for revolution, how about you start figuring out how to impact attitudes and opinions of people around you about things that need to be fixed/change? This is the long and difficult part of the process, but it has to happen before anybody can really expect political action to occur, especially with how our societies roll these days.

Inside The KKK's Plan For Expansion

AeroMechanical says...

Could ultimately be a good thing. It could shift them up the FBI priority list, going from merely a hate group to a domestic terrorist organization.

SPLC is a fine organization worth your donations. They find Klan leaders, find some excuse to sue them, then bankrupt the fuckers.

Beautiful Tornado Bears Down On A Trailer Park

AeroMechanical says...

Thanks Dolbs, that's good to know even if I will almost certainly never encounter a tornado. So, windows rolled up then. After further thought, I think the truck probably is the best idea in this scenario. Belted in and covered with a heavy blanket to protect you from flying glass should the windows break (and it's safety glass anyways) or other small debris, would be the way to go, or just curled up in a ball against the firewall if that's the only option. In the truck, you're insulated from lighting strikes or downed high tension lines, and it would provide reasonable protection from small whirling debris. You also have the mobility option should that need arise.

Granted, the truck could get hit by large missiles such as tree trunks, other cars, fat old ladies, cranes or other heavy machinery, or indeed itself be lofted hundreds of feet into the air. If any of that sort of thing happens, though, you were screwed anyways.

So, when it comes to this, I'm not really sure this is EIA in the truest sense. Given the (apparently) 30 seconds they had to plan, I think they made a reasonable choice among the options available to them. After all, it's definitely a situation where an okay plan now is better than a brilliant plan in five minutes. And yes, they probably should have come up with a plan as soon as they realized they were moving to a trailer park in ND, so a bit of EIA there. At least they kept on top of their priorities and realized the very first item of business was to film it happening, and I commend their presence of mind to hold the phone properly even in such a life-and-death situation.

Of course, since we're betting on the tornado not scoring a direct hit anyways. It could be that under a bed or in a closet in the trailer might have been just as well (losing the mobility, of course). Maybe having a trailer collapse on you is bad.

I dont' know why I find this scenario so fascintating to dissect.

Save Net Neutrality - Sen. Bernie Sanders

Porksandwich says...

Classified as common carriers and de-coupled from content production/sales.

If they remove the providing of access to internet from the same businesses trying to push their own content....we wouldn't be having this discussion.

Even as common carriers if they are still selling content, it's quite easy for them to just avoid upgrading their backbones and infrastructure AS THEY HAVE BEEN FOR YEARS to give false priority to their own content through purposeful neglect.

I really haven't seen this aspect discussed...just them making companies pay to not have their particular offerings throttled. Which is just a natural evolution of having both the delivery means and major content production under the same roof.

It'd be similar to having a major trucking company or two own all the roads and couple major manufacturers. Once they block anyone else from access to those roads or creating new ones.... They will only be interested in repairing and expanding the roads where the most profitable business is done........... And no one can do a damn thing about it because they have monopolies and basically what amounts to non-compete agreements everywhere with no minimal level of service. The only way in this circumstance to really drive down their prices and create real competition is if teleportation of goods became available and you could bypass their strangle hold on roads. Which in this case........would be wireless and satellite......which........they own too.

So when it comes to internet speeds....the only reason for them to upgrade it for the common man is if the content they sell is becoming too slow for people to consider.

That's how I see it anyway....they really aren't competing with other internet providers in the vast majority of the market...because there's only 1-2 in most.....and they sell content. They view themselves as content delivery businesses, not high speed internet providers.

Pastor's Exorcism Interrupted By Cell Phone

newtboy jokingly says...

Hilarious how the holy spirit (that they would say caused him to flail around) left him instantly when his phone rang.
Is Gawd afraid of bells or what?

Also, I guess we now know where his priorities lie. Let's hope he doesn't get any calls while officiating weddings.

Agreed 100%.

It's a fucking disgrace and we should all collectively (ooh sounds communist) hang our heads in shame as a species at our fucked up priorities.

But fighter planes are still fucking awesome.

Health Care: U.S. vs. Canada

Sagemind says...

Yes, we get triage in the wait room in emerge. and it can be slow. but you do get served.

We have four options in Canada.
1). Have a regular GP (General Practitioner), and book regular appointments
2). Go to a drop in clinic. (still uses our medical plan, have never had to pay, and always got served in a timely matter)
3). Go directly to emergency - IF it's an emergency (some people use this service when it is not an emergency, which backs up the system)
4). Call an ambulance - (A person escorted into Emerg, bypasses the triage line and gets service priority. Don't abuse this system)

Yes, every member of my family has spent time in the hospital at one point or another. We've never been charged for anything. not for the service, the supplies, the overnights. or what ever,

No one has died, though two members of my family could have without immediate emergency surgery.

I have no real complaints over the Canadian Medical System, other than the wait times on elective surgeries. Waiting for these surgeries are inconvenient but if it's important enough, your GP will push to get you in sooner if needed. so talk to your GP about it, don't complain to your friends.

Also, I personally don't know anyone who pays money to go to the US for Medical procedures. I'd really like to see the statistics on those numbers and who these people are. Because it's not the general public.

Nuclear Fusion in a Basement with a Reclusive Gunsmith

CreamK says...

You never know what creative chaos can accomplish.. But i'm pretty certain that there is not a working fusion reactor in someone garage...

About why fusion is not our first priority: Too many too powerful people have invested and profiting from old tech. They are not going to let their grasp just disappear. We wont get working fusion until the one with power are given the absolute rights to use it, period. It will NOT be for us to use for free.

ChaosEngine said:

Fusion is the single most important thing in the world right now.

We should be researching this like there's no tomorrow, because without fusion, there really isn't much of a tomorrow. We also have a limited window in which to "bootstrap" ourselves into the fusion age; fusion takes a lot of power to research and we'll only have the cheap energy to do it for the next 50 years or so.

But while I wish him all the best with his fusion reactor, I'm kinda sceptical that someone in a shed is going to beat incredibly well funded scientists and engineers to the punch.

Besides, if someone in a shed is going to invent fusion, it will be a kiwi.

Piers Morgan ~ Ted Nugent Interview

CreamK says...

So in Nugents mind, you don't need to be polite unless all people has guns? "Armed society is polite society" not to mention "scared out of their mind society". The more i hear gun nuts defending their right, it sounds more and more "cause i want to" rather than "we need to". I live in a country that was the last hunter gatherers in europe, we got longer hunting tradition than USA has been a country. There's strict gun control, every gun is registered and no one can sell them to a person who hasn't been licensed. That means basic training, belonging to a hunting club, clean(ish) record, meaning no violent crimes. And no on has complained about it.. Why? cause it simply works. Guns are where they should be, in sporting and hunting. The last priority is home protection. Getting an illegal, proper working gun is expensive as hell. Sawed off shotgun can go for a thousand, not 50 bucks. The result? Very few crimes are committed with a gun, very very few resulting in actual gunfire. It bloody well works.

How are violent crimes committed and what is used against home invasion? Bats, axes and knifes. At least the struggle become fairer and you seriously have to mean it when you can't kill someone 10m away. You have to be hands on, in their getting bloody, mixing your DNA all over the place.. See where i'm going with this? With a gun, you can kill someone in safety and have less chances of getting caught. Every act of violent crime leaves two sets of evidence, victim and perpetrator can be both identified later. With a gun you got a victim and a bullet from unknown, unregistered gun that is disposed soon after since it's freaking easy and cheap to just buy a new one..

The whole idea of not supporting background check and leaving guns in the wild is just moronic and has nothing to do with government knowing who has guns and abusing that power. It has all to do with "cause i want to have one".

Restored Faith In Humanity - The Norweigans

CreamK says...

Would be exactly the same in Finland too, i guess it's the annual cold and common sense. We wont let kids freeze, no matter what is the social status, child health is big priority here. Taking care of other peoples kids when needed is still very close to the culture.

The next thing that would've happened when heard he is 65km from home is to call the cops. They call the parents and provide temporary shelter. But then would've started the social worker round and that is not pleasant.. It's the one part of our 'nanny state' that often oversteps it's boundaries and that is really unfortunate.

How attached cats are to their owners?

CreamK says...

Speaking from my own experience, so skip if you need facts..

Depends on a cat but the ones that are brought up in an environment where it hasn't suffer any major traumas (note, i don't mean neglect or abuse, even a cat living in best possible conditions can get in accidents that change their behavior) tend to inspect everything new as priority one. Basically, if it's not with kittens, it's gonna check any new things or people as soon as possible. The difference how dogs behave is dramatic, they tend to keep owners as reference. Cats don't do that and it's all about pack mentality.

When the cat is rescued or had a accident, they tend to associate owners as more of a mother figure and sometimes are almost incapable to handle separation. I've had a few cats as guests and for healthy cat it's few seconds to touch, few minutes before it sits on your lap and few hours before it trusts you to pick it up. Even in the worst cases by day four you are among the humans it trust but it might require some trust building exercises.. (One that does the trick well is if the cat sits in owners lap, stranger sits beside the owner, humans interact normally, in calm voice, no sudden movements and don't take notice of the cat, sometimes for hours. Every time it's inborn curiosity wins.

Funnily, i haven't had the same effect with food which is in contrast on this study. "Healthy" cats pick up really really fast who hands out the sustenance and can ditch the owner in a heartbeat for a good meal.... If the stranger has softer lap, that's where the darn thing heads. Cat just chooses very simply the best available option and needs to be aware of all options so it's curious. I kind a like that quest for efficiency. A lot of signs of empathy are actually cat trying to do what it can so that it's owner returns to normality; you cry, it comes rubbing on you. Not because of love but simply "won't you shut the f#¤% up".

But i've seen cats with their owners and they sure do love them. It' just that cats love is inclusive rather than exclusive.

Jon Stewart VS Megyn Kelly and Fox News

Lawdeedaw says...

Skin color > than ethnic/religious/sexual orientation. Jews are treated white over black people. If we cannot understand this we don't understand true racism. (Yes, millions of Jews were killed in the Holocaust and in many other atrocities, but if there had been blacks in their place, blacks would have taken priority.)

So yeah, I would say Jesus was white. A white Jew, like John Stewart perhaps. Now he wasn't Anglo American, that's for sure.
