richard dawkins hammers ben carsons belief in creationism

Jinx says...

Clearly it is important in a presidential race to be seen as religious, which is a shame. What I don't really fully understand is why they don't roll with the oft favoured fallacy of argument from middle ground. Religious peeps, you can pretty much have your cake and eat it here... as long as you're willing to drop the whole literal interpretation of Genesis you can just use Evolution as more "evidence" to the glory of God's creation! Surely only a divine being would be able create a universe in which life is its own watchmaker! etc etc. Hey presto, you've just positioned yourself between those two extremes as a voice of moderation and at least America would get a Rep Pres that doesn't seem to be waging a war on rational...well, just on being rational.

Wait. Unless the point is they all want to appear to be more extreme than the other guy in order to pander to the smallest minds in the room.

Did a few of miss the part where you can select the parts that are automated and manual?

You're asking for situations where you can choose and the video shows that almost as the first feature. It's there people

Personally for me, it makes sense to have it be 100% automated by default, place your hands on those bits for 3seconds to enter manual. Release both hands, reverts back to automatic.

The 3 seconds is more of a human thing, I'm sure the the car never actually stops any of its automatic calculations, it simply turns on/off if you can control steering and acceleration.

Presto, enjoy driving however you want and not driving whenever you want.

I'm still a firm of advocate of 100% forced automation, sorry, humans are just far too incapable to be driving death machines. I'm sorry if you enjoy it, we'll just create little "driving vacation spots" and we can all move on? After all, you're probably not getting nostalgic about your commutes to work.

But it'll take a while yet for the automation to be able to handle 100% of driving. In the mean time, this sort of dual mode looks pretty great to me.

Along with Payback, I too am running into oddities accessing the site. For me, it appears to be browser based.

Google Chrome, Safari and Firefox, it works fine. Opera, my preferred browser, has stopped working with the videosift address. The cdn version or direct IP routes work fine.

The ipv4 address matches, and I've yet to acknowledge ipv6 but I'll assume it's accurate

videosift.com -> 2600:3c00::f03c:91ff:fe70:f3af, 66.228.54.105
cdn.videosift.com -> 108.161.188.129

Protecting and Serving in Minnesota

SquidCap says...

It is a common tactic with police, i believe everywhere in the world that not complying when you have every right to do so will lead to an escalated action.

Here in Finland, they have to have a search warrant for entering and searching your home. But the trick here is, there is an exception in the law. Basically it says that in special circumstances, they don't need a warrant. Refusing a search can be considered as suspicious, a special circumstance and hey presto: they can now search your home. The loophole is there originally to stop destroying evidence or to give possibility to stop domestic abuse. As such, it is logical but how it is being used in conjunction with non-compliance, is just wrong.

Lies begin when a non-omnipotent consciousness forms and that consciousness seeks, let's say, truth, yet finds only half truths that require mental gymnastics in order to believe. Sand exists. How? I don't know. God? It's only natural to invent things concept to fill in the gaps.

A civilization of people formed out of collective half truths has unfulfillable expectations in this world which creates the security breach which breeds more lies. Thus it becomes state authority creating lies to appease those that their ancestors lied to since the beginning of our time. Brother kills brother. How did your brother die? A member of the opposing tribe did it! Opposing tribe dies. Known "truth" then becomes fact and history remembers that a violent tribe of brother-killers was sacked.

Truth will ALWAYS be an illusion to mortal beings of limited perspective. Always. Even if you perceptively died and met God in Heaven, it still remains suspect that your experience could be a lie guided by carefully controlled stimuli. If there's a modicum of truth that we have observed with science, it's only truth within the system of our understanding of the universe, therefore not Truth.

Yes, science allows us to observe and our observations have allowed us to record "laws" of the universe, but even someone like Richard Feynman admits to making shit up and then, Presto! it makes the equation make sense. Lies. No matter how small, they can fill in the gaps just enough to create perceived truth. But that's mechanical truth. A mechanism just needs to work or not work. It doesn't matter if you did everything right using precise truth.

So you may think: If life is an illusion, then what about all of the scientific experiments which have allowed us to create civilization as we know it? Well, every game, or sandbox, follows rules, so experiments within that world can be valid in that world according to the laws that govern it, but it doesn't mean those laws are the Truth.

If the world we are in was akin to something like Minecraft, observation would indicate that the world is functional and that there are observations which can be repeated over and over again with the same or similar results, leading to the creation of technology. But what about the concept of a .JAR or .DLL? Checksum? How about a network? If we only know the observed laws of the current server we have access to observe, how do we record the Truth? Black box observation and nothing more. My kingdom for a scientist that can perform unit testing. A string theory unit tester might be a good start.

Anyway, just rambling for communal sanity, as always. Not all of us have picked a side, let alone a position of understanding in the universe to cling to like a crucifix or a meme.

If all were known in the "if we only knew" category firstly, videos here would be much more entertaining and all the toxic mental gymnastics in which so many here engage would quickly shift from banal spitting-matches on topics of politics, religion, and "why Johnny should ban guns" to something completely different and ultimately more beneficial to communal sanity.

BBC Horizon - Fantastic Documentary "The Truth About Fat"

snoozedoctor says...

To a large extent, no pun intended, obese people want to find out why they are a "victim" of obesity. The explosion of obesity, especially in the USA, is rather easily explained if you use some common sense. What has evolution designed us for, in terms of our metabolism? Humans have had to work for what they eat, and that food has always been relatively unprocessed and calorie deficient. Now we are sedentary, programmed to eat a certain amount until we feel "full" and that food is VERY calorie dense. Presto, an epidemic of obesity. I mean really, is it that hard to understand? Yes, some people are more prone to become obese. We all know people with a "hollow leg" that seem to eat incredible amounts of food, and yet they don't get obese. So, your body type does influence it.
I'm all for science that makes it easier to lose weight. We know people have a hard time fighting their compulsions, whether it be tobacco, alcohol, drugs, or food. But, all those things are choices. A cheeseburger doesn't just jump down your throat. There is no "I can't lose weight." Yes you can, if your willpower is greater than your compulsion, and if you go back to the habits that evolution designed you for. One reason obesity rates are greater in the US is the average person's caloric expenditure is less here. Americans walk about 1/3 as much distance per year as compared to Europeans. American cities are sprawling and walking is not an efficient means of getting stuff done. Plus, there are now scooters in every Walmart now, so the obese can walk even less.
I do strenuous exercise several times a week and I try to eat reasonably. Frankly, I don't like exercise that much. I don't get any "high" from it. But I know it's good for me, actually, THE MOST important thing I can do to benefit my health. It's a choice. Everyone has choice, except I guess the kids that grow up in homes where parents ply them with calorie dense foods. The parents don't have to, but they do. Every time they go to the grocery, they have choice. The pop tarts don't jump off the shelve and into their carts.
I just get tired of the "victim" mentality, that's more prominent in the US than anywhere I know.

How to fix an SLR with Peanut Butter

rebuilder says...

It would probably be a good idea to spray paint the part black before installing to avoid flaring.

Personally I'd go on thingiverse.com to see if someone's already made a lens hood:
http://www.thingiverse.com/search?q=lens+hood&sa=Search
and print it out. But then I have a Makerbot and when you have a 3d printer, every problem is plastic waiting to be put in the right shape...

In any case, makeshift solutions are very cool. Realizing you're able to solve a lot of problems yourself is very empowering, and usually fixing stuff isn't hard at all. Case in point, a while ago I dropped my camera, too, and the shutter button got stuck in the focus position. Olympus gave me a repair quote that came to about half the price of a new camera, so I thought I'd take a chance and see if I can fix it myself. All it took was undoing some screws, googling around a bit to see how to take some of the less obvious parts off, and presto, the button was unstuck and I saved a nice bit of cash.

TEDxCopenhagen - Why We Shouldn't Bike with a Helmet

bmacs27 says...

First of all this dude is a pretentious twat. I agree with everything said by bamdrew and then some about his presentation style. Like someone else said, between the lack of citations, and the literature degree, my bullshit meter almost sprayed mercury all over the ceiling. Now moving on to content.

Anyone that has ever been in a serious cycling accident, with or without helmet, will encourage you to wear one. I don't really care what the government does. I'm going to encourage their use to anyone I talk to about cycling. It's irresponsible to suggest you shouldn't. If you want to encourage cycling, get on a bike. It starts with yourself, and believe me, people notice, think about the benefits, and follow your lead. Any concerns people have about safety are likely justified. Cars hit cyclists. In such an event wearing a helmet is unlikely to add to your peril.

Most of municipalities I've lived in have had "mandatory" helmets (with the quotes reflecting the lack of enforcement). Like speed limits, helmets are a suggestion, that can be enforced if you're being a real idiot. However I'd argue that enforcing proper traffic etiquette on a bicycle is more important than enforcing helmets. So often I see people weaving on the wrong side of the road, or hipsters with their brakeless fixies plowing through pedestrians on the sidewalk, or blowing off red lights.

EDIT: My suspicion is that his results come from funny numbers/foolish normalizations. That is, a survey that says, do you wear your helmet when you ride your bike, to a random population. Many (or more likely most) of the people say no. The researcher then counts the number of serious injuries that involved cyclists with and without helmets, and does the division. Presto, helmets aren't any safer. However, they've neglected to take into account the drastically more miles likely biked by the helmet wearing crowd.
