McKellen and Jacobi Flubbing Their Lines

poolcleaner says...

McKellen is the type of actor you can just watch and enjoy no matter what he says, but when he genuinely laughs and pops up out of his characters it's such a pleasure.

Sizzler Commercial Circa 1991

spawnflagger says...

If they replace SIZZLER with CANDIDATE, this would be the perfect political ad of all time.

(I was really hoping to see the crazed murderer from Too Many Cooks pop up any second there)

why is my video getting buried (Sift Talk Post)

Seems to be about right, minus some detalis...except...

3) if you hover over the vote number, who voted and which way pops up for you now. It's a bit hidden, but it's there.

I had no idea that the additional pages were not loading for some people, they always do for me. I'm glad you've told Lucky.
EDIT: I do only see an arrow for the last page, not a number, which is odd but works.

Wow, this is out of hand.

(correct me if I'm wrong here)
I think:
- @billpayer posted a video that was calling out racism where it was not.
- He received a down-vote.
- He failed to be able to find his post afterwards.
- Instead of contacting @lucky760 to see if there was a glitch, he killed and re-posted.
- He was accused of doing something unethical to cover-up a down-vote.
- Then people proceeded to down-vote where, they may have normally just not-voted.

Then a whole pile of other accusations, and in-fighting started.

So, lets get to the problem here.
Is there a defect with the mechanism?
1). The Sift IS failing to indicate additional pages, I've noticed this quite a bit lately.
2). I've also noticed that the sift pages can't decide if they want to use the new format or the old one. I seem to get them both randomly on each page - no pattern that I've noticed. This tends to confuse how we are seeing things.
3). The information that used to be at the bottom of the page, which indicated who has up-voted or down-voted is missing. We can no longer tell who has voted in which direction.

Anonymous voting is just an enticement for non-members to feel like they're participating and to get them to convert their non-real votes into real votes.

In the old VS, a message would pop up like "Great, you've started voting! Now sign up to make your votes count!" but I believe that doesn't happen anymore.

The votes don't affect anything. They're only in the user's browser who cast the vote, but if they sign up or sign in, those fake votes will be converted into actual votes.

Hi Lucky

Are unregistered people still allowed to vote? Are they a 1:1 ratio if they are?

I had a colleague at work vote for some but it didn't seem to count. Looking also at a few that have recently been linked on Blues News, the number of votes exactly matches the number of names in the "who voted for this" box. I would have thought some of them might have had non-members voting as well. Unless it's changed and/or they're not a 1:1 ratio.

Just curious.

Thanks

Conan O'Brien: Deon Cole takes on Thai Underboob

MilkmanDan says...

I teach English in a Thai High School. Sometimes I select topical news stories and develop a worksheet that shows an article, covers some of the vocabulary, and has a page of questions to check for reading comprehension and understanding of the vocabulary words.

When I saw this "underboob" story pop up in my google news feed, I figured I'd have to put together a worksheet like that on it... Take a bunch of classes with roughly 40 students around 16-17 years old, of which 80% are male (school is co-ed but primarily boys), add in vocabulary, reading, and comprehension questions, with a twist of "underboob", and I figure I've got a winning recipe for education!

...Might just have to save this video clip and incorporate it into the lesson also.

'Do you hear that bass Mom?'

Shepppard says...

Woah woah, easy there killer. That escalated insanely quickly. It's videosift, not everyone has to like everything. Who knows, maybe he was being a dick and didn't know that it was a line from the song, maybe he took issue with your punctuation. we'll likely never know.

But if you're going to require someone to express why they downvoted your comment without it being something like going through and downvoting ALL your comments, you need to either abolish the function or have a little text box pop up explaining why you're downvoting.

Either way, I think everyone needs to calm down a bit here.

There is no valid platform for engagement here.

My comment was the next line from the song in the video. Either you don't know the song and thought I was dissing the video or you do know the song and didn't appreciate or understand how punnily my knowledge and usage of the lyric fit the context.

I'm simply asking which it is. Perhaps you can take a moment to climb down from your high horse and answer my very straightforward question.

I've never had a problem with you before, but I'm starting to understand why no one likes you. Let me know if you'd like to start another self-imposed ban and I'll quickly oblige.

VideoSift v6 (VS6) Beta Video Page (Sift Talk Post)

oritteropo says...

That's really good The previous member menu layout wasn't nearly as usable, and I'm VERY glad to see beggar's canyon linked.

Remaining things I'm still switching back and forth for are:

  • Number of votes of my current vids (the "My Unsifted Videos" pop-up doesn't seem to have a direct equivalent yet in v6 beta).
  • Adding vids to playlists.

lucky760 said:

I've added back in lots of functionality like the ability to edit videos, fix dead videos, view/activate backup embeds, display (prominently) if a video is dead, and created links for beggar's canyon, dead pool, thumbnails wanted, top users, awards, and top badges.

Most of those things now live under the member tab.

In the mouseover menus, when I hover, the menu pops up AND a little description text pops up. This text seems unnecessary as the menu is already open and the contents can hopefully speak for themselves. If it is necessary, as it stands, it's annoying that it overlays the content of the menu, particularly the Discuss menu where the text, "Community Discussion" covers up the top comment line.

I've added a delay to the menus so they'll only appear if you pause your mouse over a tab.

@oritteropo - Thanks for reporting. Fixed the invocation pop-up.

@Hastur - Thanks for chiming in. Bookmark functionality is going to be restored.

Some things:

1. The length of a video affects whether I feel like watching it. I'd like to see the length (in parens) added after the title of each vid, or some other way of quickly seeing how long they are.

2. Lengths on the page itself are also really helpful when fixing dead links to know the odds you've got the right one.

3. I hate mouseover menus that pop up too easily (new ones seem to pop up instantly) and ones that don't go away easily (they have a disappear delay) or change easily (they have a change delay).

I'd like these timings to be opposite:
* mouseover menus should open only after a short delay (long enough for my mouse to pass over if it was going somewhere else);
* they should change instantly to the next menu when I mouseover the next heading; <---this one especially! and * they should all close instantly when my mouse goes below the menu or above the headings bar.

The Lord of the Rings Mythology Explained - CGP Grey

MilkmanDan says...

The Silmarillion reads very differently than Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit, or any novel really... It has a sort of scripture / Biblical feel about it, even beyond the creation story that starts the book being a Tolkien-style Genesis.

But even beyond that, there is a lot of great material in there if you can get around the denseness of it. The story of the war that finishes off the first age is really, really good.

But before you give the book a shot, know that 1 page of Silmarillion takes longer to digest than 1 page of most texts. Very helpful to get the footnote annotated edition that has an appendix to refer to to help remind you when characters pop up that haven't been mentioned for a LONG time, etc.
