What is porous asphalt and how does it work?

Stormsinger says...

A minor point...porous asphalt is only briefly mentioned. The video spends some 90%+ of its time explaining porous concrete, which except for the embedded plastic is a fairly obvious concept. I still have no idea how porous asphalt could work...I'd think the tar would make it pretty watertight.

The result of our obsession with plastic

If true, then that makes it easier to mitigate the problem than having to troll the entire ocean. Even just baling up the plastic trash and sinking it to the bottom would help the problem immensely.

Apparently on the order of 90% of the plastic in the oceans enters the oceans by way of 10 Asian and African rivers. Not saying landfills are great but they are better than having all your waste flushed into your rivers. I think the main problem is 3rd world countries that have poor infrastructure for waste collection.

Testing the ice

SFOGuy says...

I was taught to:
1) drill or chop holes close to shore first to check thickness
2) Carry a long pole/piece of wood (6 feet plus) so that if you fell, you wouldn't go under the ice (the idea of being swept under ice and not getting back to the hole you fell into...)
3) If going to rescue someone, tie off/get a line around yourself, and spread your body weight out by crawling/using a saucer/pan/kid's plastic sled...and offer them a line, pole, or thrown sleeve of a garment, not your hand.

anyway, looks like it was pond--they just lost some dignity.

The result of our obsession with plastic

*doublepromote exposing how humans have spoiled one of the most remote and beautiful places on earth. Notice how hard it is to differentiate between plastic bags and jellyfish. That's why most sea turtles have a stomach full of plastic bags.
As a species, we should really *fear the implications of the ocean food web collapsing but, clearly, arguing about politics, guns, welfare, collusion, trade wars, and pussy grabbing comes well ahead of actually working towards planetary survival on most people's agendas.

Easy Tray - Horrible Translation! Hilarity ensues!!

RFlagg says...

I was about to say "are we sure this isn't meant to be a spoof" but then opened the video to the original YouTube... not a spoof. Wow. Then again, people are watching and spreading it, so it's still a win for them I guess.

I'd think taking clothes out of the middle will still be hard, perhaps a tad easier than without the plastic trays, but overall...

One Kick Ass Donald Trump Float In Parade

MilkmanDan says...

Fun -- any idea where it was?

The cropping and general video quality makes it look sort of like old footage. Kinda reminded me of JFK assassination video, lol

**edit**
Googling "Clear Cut Plastics Inc." shows that storefront in Seattle. So that makes a lot of sense.

The Man Clearing Tons of Trash From Mumbai’s Beaches

nanrod says...

Most of the trash in the oceans comes from rivers. I read once that 90% of the plastic in the oceans comes from just 13 countries. This shocked me enough to look into it. The consensus seems to be that 80 to 95%(depending on your source) of all the trash in the oceans flows into the oceans from just 10 rivers, being all the major rivers of China, southeast Asia, plus the Nile and the Niger in Africa. However, that's trash in the oceans. This volume of garbage on the beach probably comes from locals using the beach as a dumping ground.

where does all this crap come from? the local community or does it was ashore?

my other question is how many dead bodies have they found?

Takeout creates a lot of trash. It doesn't have to.

I buy a 1 litre coke zero then reuse it for a water bottle for a few months until it gets lost or cracks form or something. I laugh at people buying those ridiculous aluminum and unbreakable plastic water bottles. They're just making a statement. My bottle costs me $.10 if I lose it, not $20.

California essentially banned them in grocery stores (oddly they still have free produce plastic bags) and charges $.10 for paper bags. It seems to be working.....

From 1 jan 2016 the Dutch government has obliged shops and restaurants to charge 10 cents for any plastic bag they give out.

This means plastic bag use in supermarkets, shops and restaurants has fallen by 70%. It has also triggered shops and restaurants to be more aware. Disposable napkins, cutlery etc are only given when asked. Part of this was that it is a cost to the companies and the government made it socially acceptable, even hip, to take these out.

I loved this show...enough that I had a die cast eagle and a plastic one that made laser sounds.
