Microsoft's response to the PS4 not having DRM
Unpopular opinion incoming!
First, full disclaimer: I am not a game developer, but I do write software for a living I'd prefer to be paid (and paid well) for my skills.
Ok, here's the thing. Sorry, but not your stuff. You didn't make it and you don't own it. You own a licence to use it. End of.
I know I'm in the minority here, but I believe not only is a certain amount of DRM acceptable, it's actually unfortunately necessary. I am possibly crazy, but I believe in paying the fucking writer.
Now DRM as it stands is fucking bullshit. *I* paid to watch this motherfucking movie. *i* paid to play this fucking game. Every time you cunts force me sit through a fucking anti -piracy message, it makes me more inclined to pirate your fucking content.
And I don't want to. If I'm buying your game/movie/book, I've already decided your artistic output is worth my time and energy that I put into working. Fuck it, I could have stayed at home and learned to play drums. I've wanted to do that for years, but I don't have the fucking TIME! So you get my time/work/energy.
How fucking dare you waste my precious free time on your sanctimonious fucking ads targeting the very people who don't give a shit about your message, and who, by some perverse twist of natural justice, don't have to put up with your bullshit.
That said.....
"wah, I don't like your DRM" is not a valid excuse to pirate content. If you don't like the way company X distributes your favourite book/game/movie/tv show.... don't consume that content.
No, seriously, (and I'm well aware I'm going to engender a lot of hate for this) if you feel you are entitled to the fruits of someone else's hard work because you don't agree with how it's distributed, then seriously, fuck you. Yeah, I'm not kidding. I don't care if it's WB or HBO or EA or whatever undeniably fucking idiotic big media conglomerate. At some point, a bunch of hard working, talented people created something you want to consume.
PAY THOSE FUCKING PEOPLE.
Or find another way to let those creators know you want their content but not as it's currently available.
If it's awesome, find a way to let them know. If it's shit, don't consume it.
So back to games and drm and copying.
It boils down to this. Buy the games you want. Support the people who are working their arses off because they love what their doing. If you think the new COD is shit (and you're in good company), then don't buy it, don't pirate it and for the love of FSM, don't play it. Your time is valuable. Buy a cheap PC and play FTL or Monaco or Fez or Walking Dead or Mark of the Ninja.... all great games, none of which need a "next gen" (aka 3 or 4 gens ago on the pc) console. Hell, go kickstart Star Citizen.
Fuck it, this is now so long I don't know where or why or how I started.*
Pay the people who make the things you love. They deserve it. They'll make more cool shit. Don't borrow it, don't pirate it. Just, pay them. They get fuck all enough as it is.
* kids! don't write posts drunk after midnight on Saturday after watching the All Blacks crush the French! You will write unpopular opinions and most likely excommunicate yourself from online communities you enjoy!
Hence, I try to avoid these DRMs. MY stuff. I keep! I sell if I want to.
Shia Labeouf Tried to Warn Us!!
So they keep every ping ever sent to every server in existence? They keep copies of every video ever uploaded to youtube multiplied by THE NUMBER OF TIMES ITS BEEN VIEWED? They keep copies of every single video game ever created multiplied by THE NUMBER OF TIMES IT'S BEEN DOWNLOADED (on Steam, Pirate Bay, etc.)
Every single IP capera in existence, streaming video (often times 1080p video) to remote locations around the world is having it's stream recorded non stop, 24/7. I'd say those cameras alone produce at least 10 terabytes of data EVERY SECOND.
Whatever.
The CTO of the CIA gave a talk this year where he said, in no uncertain terms, they they collect everything and keep it "forever." He put the scare-quotes around forever but not everything.
Daft Punk - Lose Yourself To Dance (mashup with Soul Train)
Piracy is to large parts a service problem after all. Why do you think Game of Thrones is the most pirated TV show? It wouldn't have been if it was available for purchase right after the broadcast.
I'm currently enjoying Hannibal on iTunes. I have to wait two or three days after an episode aired and I can download and watch it. I paid for it and I love it.
I like True Blood too. I really want to watch Season 6. There is no HBO available where I live. Do I wait till May next year, when it will be legally available for the first time? Do I?
Same here, people will pay if you let them. Not all but many.
EDIT: I'm very disappointed it's "sweat" and not "slut". I just like them very much.
Music that is not available for sale yet... Entire album being shared at all quality levels for at least a week. Not available to buy anywhere. This person had to DL illegally to make this great promo for their music that I still cannot pay for no matter how much I want to.
Captain Phillips - Official Trailer
The poor black pirates are just trying to get their share of corporate profits from the evil oil producers. This movie is endorsed by socialists everywhere.
Captain Phillips - Official Trailer
So you want the pirates to be white? I don't see what racism has to do with facts.
It's the perfect Hollywood movie, the bad guys are black and have accents!
Nobody can even call racism, because its based on a true story, right?
A poem for FTL
This damn game! I have sunk waaaay too much time into it.
It's like an abusive relationship. It starts out all nice and friendly.
It's all "you rescued some colonists, have some scrap" and
"here, have a cool new gun" or
"awesome job killing that pirate".
Then suddenly... FACEPUNCH!
Asteroids, bitch! and now you've been boarded. and they've killed half your crew. Look at you, leaking oxygen and simultaneously on fire somehow. You disgust me. Why don't you just explode already?
Oh... you did.
I.... I see. christ, I didn't mean to hurt you...it's just.. look, I'm sorry. I just ... lose it sometimes.
Come back... please.
Next time will be different. I swear. I'll prove it. Here's a new ship!
And like a fool, I think "maybe this time...."
Everything You Need To Know About Digital Audio Signals
I am still going through his last video which I think he takes on compression, but I can tell you right now as for mp3, it is cd-quality, but it is not cd. Even at high bitrates, the high frequencies get hit hard. It is pretty sad we continue to let our music suffer with a lot of people still compressing to mp3. If you look hard enough though you will find people using FLAC, and apples high bitrate AAC files are great. Anime fansubs which are probably more fickle about quality and standards then the Hollywood movie pirate scene are now all using AAC in their mp4 file instead of bad old mp3. Although in its defense, MOST movie rips are AC3/DTS, or at least offer it aside long its MP3 stereo track.
Thanks for the reply and sharing your expertise -- sounds like you'd confirm everything that the video said.
This probably just displays my ignorance more, but specifically with regards to the MP3 format, do you think it adds any noticeable compression artifacts even at high-quality settings? Part of my problem was that I was thinking of MP3 *bit*rate as sampling rate (128 kbit/s = 128 kHz, which is not at all correct). But still, MP3 is a lossy format (obviously since one can turn a 650M CD into ~60M of 128k MP3s, or still a large filesize savings even for 320k) and even my relatively untrained ear can sometimes hear the difference at low (say, 128k or lower) bitrates.
I guess that a music producer wouldn't record/master anything in a compressed format like MP3, so that is sort of entirely separate from the point of this video and your comment. But just out of curiosity, do you think that people can detect differences between a 16 bit 44 kHz uncompressed digital recording (flac maybe?) and a very high quality MP3 (say, 320 kbit)?

Just you wait until they unveil the Bullfrog ball buster, with which they will require one of these installed hooked into origin at all times to not get your balls crushed while playing any EA games. It may seem draconian, but really, only pirates have anything to fear or if your internet goes down. Fun!
EA - ruining your nostalgia since you got nostalgic.
I remember when Origin was the premier developer; Wing Commander, Ultima, System Shock, Shadowcaster; then EA bought them. They gradually ruined all of their properties (Ultima 9, Privateer 2), then cancelled the sequels due to poor sales, then shuttered the studio. Now, as a final insult, they've cut off Origin's head and sewn it onto the body of a shitty DRM/DD system.
Holy shit, does EA suck.

Worst Product Placement in TV
People started skipping commercials, then bitched about commercials, and then pirated to avoid commercials, then tivo'd pirated material to avoid commercials . . . What did you expect?
But seriously, this isn't new. It's so old it's frightening that people are only realizing they're being sold to through product placement.
Grocery stores . . . the company pays the grocery store to be placed at eye level.
Smokers . . . companies used to pay (and still do) pay hot chicks to go to bars and clubs and smoke their brand. Or vodka. My neighbor does liquor promotions. That's all he does. Hires hot 18 year old to go pass out vodka.
Why? It works. Simple.
DJESUS UNCROSSED - SNL
Comcast? Slow ass internet?
Not sure where that came from or how it applies. We don't even have Comcast in Canada. *shrug*
Anyway my point is that I'm tired of these content producers that won't allow people outside the U.S. from viewing their stuff. We can watch SNL on TV. We could pirate it. We could use proxy servers to get around the ban. It's completely asinine and ignorant. They will gladly sell Canadians shows by the season on DVDs, but they get the complete shaft otherwise. Wish they would respect their foreign customers a bit more is all.
Leave Comcast alone!!! What did they ever do to you? Give you slow ass internet?!
Holy shit you're so right.
