8 Months pregnant woman tasered by police

arekin says...

I am really torn here, I agree that the cops are not able to test for pregnancy on the scene and ave to assume that a combative and struggling person may be lying to get a chance to escape. But I've been the husband during a pregnancy so I know that it is difficult to lay down on your stomach with a baby on board. I think the right answer would have been to cooperate calmly and ask if I could lay on my side with my hands behind my back as I am pregnant. Calmly explaining during a high stress situation would likely get through this without the risk of endangering anyone. And if it did escalate I'm very glad that they opted for taser over pepper spray. Pepper spray would likely do much more damage to the mother and the unborn child.

I definately wouldn't say that a taser is a "lazy cops" method. A taser prevents secondary targets from being affected (unlike pepper spray) and the cop in question definitely did not want to get into a wrestling match with the suspect while wearing a suit (where it would be unlikely that he would be able to control the situation). The suspect was warned and refused to back down.

As for cops in general being lazy, again I say no. I have two state police officers for friends and at lest with the Indiana state troopers the line is drawn when the possibility of injury to the officer would exceed the possibility of injury to the suspect from the taser. If its an old dude or someone who appears to have health issues they are obviously going to use more restraint than some young punk kid who will suffer some pain but will be back on his feet shortly.

I was speaking of the people above who think he should have been dispensed more pain for his behavior.

However... a taser is not simply for "detaining a suspect", although it may be used to do so. It's an extreme form of non-lethal (usually) force to be used when other means have failed or are untenable. UNCAT even classifies it as a torture device. Tasers are just another tool cops use to be lazy assholes, IMMHO, and I think it's unfortunate that they have become so ubiquitous and citizens so ignorant that they cheer for more when they see a guy get tased for merely being a jackass, which, I don't think, is against the law.

So is this a "commercial" or is it "viral"?

Good program. Good PR. I'm glad they are doing this, and it will start to help to repair the Davis police's reputation after the recent pepper spraying of protesters.
That said. I have no problem with them issuing warnings or citations for people riding on the streets without lights or proper reflectors. Hopefully the viral video will have a broader positive effect than citations.
Another thing police could do with any sort of 'not up to code' violation, would be to issue a citation, but wave the fee if you can demonstrate that you have fixed the problem within 30 days.. for example, by mailing in a copy of the receipt for a bike light.

Those sifters (like myself) typically look at the video and don't immediately assume we know the full situation. From the looks of things here this is pretty strait forward abuse. I'm glad to know that one obvious abuse video validates numerous other "gotcha" videos that end up on the internet. I'm sure by now we all know that pepper spray, tasers, and batons where all placed in police hands for brutality and can never be used for the aid in apprehending a suspect.

What happened to the sifters who used to chime in defending the cops every time one of these videos came on the sift? They get exhausted or something?

I have a nasty feeling these are metrosexuals. Might be gay - might be straight. Don't matter either way - give them 3 chillies and they act like bitches on heat (I mean the dogs).

Yeah, I didn't get any particular vibe...but I suspect even a threat of pepper spray would settle them right down.

I think the underlying point is. A lot of crap is blown out of proportions in the US. Look at the video of the police ruining a house because they THOUGHT the owner's son may have been living there and spent ....4? hours shooting it full of pepper spray and tear gas. This was over a robbery where no one was hurt or killed, and he was alleged to have done it but had no formal charges on him as of the making of the video.

Copyright infringement has absurdly large numbers attached to it, so I have no doubt that what happened in the case of a suspected robber would be scaled up to meet the dollar amount suspected to have been "stolen" by someone who has very little absolute proof on those damages. I mean all those copyright infringement videos say you're stealing dollars right out of the working stiff's pockets if you don't buy it from the approved channels, which may or may not include any of the digital offerings...especially if they don't have direct ties to some media conglomerate.

And I don't doubt in the future that they start looking at ways to make sure you don't let anyone else watch the movie via borrowing or taking it to their house, etc. Because that's a little too much like sharing which is just another name for copyright infringement. They already try really hard to do it with ebooks, which you pay anywhere from 3-5x the price of a paperback for an ebook from most publishers....and they just set out to make it more costly using Apple a few months back.

It's absolutely insane, and I would be shocked if this video doesn't eerily depict something that has happened already somewhere in the US or at the hands of US influence in other countries. And I am not even including the Megaupload/Dotcom fiasco...which they raided his house. Seems absolutely plausible and only gets even more so each passing day. They continue to try to pass a lot of underhanded laws in the "War on Copyright Infringement"...it's a good blanket excuse for a lot of bullshit to slide in. It's getting up there with "For the children!"

If a protest involves hordes of people marching in the street, blocking traffic and generally being loud and annoying, I don't really consider that "peaceful." It may not be violent but it's entirely disruptive and hinders people's ability to get where they need to go and do what they need to do.
You can try and justify the disruption by saying that it's the only way to get attention but really, you would only say that if you agreed with the protestors. If a bunch of people marched on the streets because the MSRP of Twinkies was raised by 5 cents, would that protest still be "justified"? A disruption is a disruption, regardless of motivation. If the protestors in the video had permits and conducted their activity in a genuinely peaceful manner, I seriously doubt there would have been any police intervention.

You only see what you want to see. The only people being disruptive and blocking traffic in this video are the cops and their fucking horses.
And who said you have a right to life without "disruption" anyway? You gonna call the police when that asshole won't stop talking in the movie theater? You going to just keep your mouth shut and walk away peacefully when that cashier overcharges you for your Twinkies? Maybe your idea of protest is standing quietly on some street corner, permit in pocket, holding a sign. It's not my idea of protest (not any more), and if disruptions bother you, stay home and veg on VS all day. Just remember to be quiet and keep your opinions to yourself, because I feel they are disruptive, and they bother me.

Flawed analogies. If you're telling someone to quiet down in a theater, you are directly addressing the person you take issue with. If you tell a cashier that he overcharged you, same deal. Nobody aside from the people directly responsible for your grievances are affected. Conversely, when you block traffic so you can protest against police brutality, who are you actually affecting? The cops will show up and do what they get paid to do. Bystanders, on the other hand, get screwed.

If you want to protest police brutality, do it where only police are affected. Like a police station. Don't do it in the middle of a business area where you're just impeding people's ability to live their lives. If you're so self-centered that you're willing to promote your agenda at the expense of everyone else, don't surprised when people get irritated. And when these people have body armor, guns, tazers, tear gas, pepper spray, riot shields, etc, things probably won't end well for you.

Didnt a police dog get loose and bite A BABY ... damn... you know lately im losing my fear of myself owning a firearm.. i really didnt think it was a good idea for me to have a lethal weapon... something is rapidly changing my mind and its not fear... its logic... there is too much crazy out there, so be prepared... i may need to shoot a dog someday, or a crazy person in a theater... i give up. i'll buy one. im not happy about it though.

edit: as i sit holding my kabar tdi last ditch knife, i realized it will suffice in nearly all SELF defense situations... i am trying to weigh my desire to live with my duty to protect those around me... i cant protect them from myself though and i still wonder how my perception of myself will change with the power of life and death in my hand... a gun is a tool ONLY in the right hands... are my hands steady enough for the responsibility?? will i conceal carry to boost my ego.. do i have the temperament to handle a conflict as though i have NO gun, when i do? ... maybe i should go small caliber and take some classes.... knife, fogging pepper spray, cell phone, gun... a one man army with no training except the internet and my fantasies... am i whats wrong with the world... it must be that pesky brain again.

Pepper spray? Check.
Barricades? Check.
Clubs? Check.
Snatch and Grab Arrests? Check.
Hauling people away by their arms and legs? Check.
Punching protesters? Check.

Needlessly pinning people to the ground with your knee on their neck? Not in this video, but often used against Occupy.
Groping women as a form of intimidation and abuse? see previous.
Full riot gear? see previous.
Plastic cuffs so tight they cut off circulation? see previous
Denying prisoners food and water for up to 24 hours? see previous
Stun grenades, tear gas, tasers, bean bag rounds? see previous

Perhaps you only think this is worse than what is happening in the US because you are not paying attention.

I guess they want to show the world how much worse than the US they are. Sad.
