Science teacher got surprising results from McDonald's diet.

It wasn't a clinical study, I think the point was merely to show that it was possible for a overweight, borderline obese man to eat only MCD menu items, be satiated and maintain the calorific deficit needed to gradually lose weight, provided basic exercise was maintained.

I don't think the point was to stress that changing to MCD made his diet better (in that case adding exercise is obviously cheating), just to show that it is possible to lose weight and eat MCD.

Taking this as a reference for calorie burned:

http://www.health.harvard.edu/newsweek/Calories-burned-in-30-minutes-of-leisure-and-routine-activities.htm

45 mins walking is about 300 calories burned. Considering that teaching is primarily a pretty sedentary job (outside of class), that's only freeing up an extra 15% of your roughly daily intake needs of 2000 calories.

Not huge. I think the main takeaway here is, junk food or not, if your goal is losing weight (ignoring long term health complications), then it's all about portion control.

@JiggaJonson

As above, I think this is the main issue. I usually want half the portion that take away food outlets offer. Pricing structure then distorts the cost of the smallest size to make the larger 'value meal' much more attractive. One reason why I tend to prefer sashimi eat outs.

Men aren't judged by looks as much as women. And you're talking about clothing and things easily adjusted, such as shaving. Both of those are generally considered unkept, for good looking men or ugly men. Has nothing to do with physical merit.

Plus, if you look at, for instance, TV Anchors, how many of those men are in super good shape? Especially sports announcers. How many overweight men do you see on tv, and how many over weight women? Save for Candy, of course. (Wasn't her name Candy? Cindy? Mandy? Andy? Damn I'm bad with names grrr) Point stands, women are held to a much higher standard for physical attractiveness than men in order to be considered "worthwhile" or "have anything relevant to say".

It happens to men all the time. That's part of talking in front of a camera. You get evaluated on appearance. If a guy got up there with a neck beard and schlubby clothes people will tell him to get himself together. That is if they don't tell him to eat shit and die first.

Being called both beautiful and smart isn't bullying.

The problem isn't sexism. It's lookism.

Here's a bigger picture of mandatory " health insurance" , one that resembles another failed institution's successes and failures through extortion with the goal of diverting capitol to private coffers.

Fuck birth control, I don't feed myself as influenced by the corporate media machine's saturation diet of shit food but the majority of unhealthy, overweight, drones in sector EVERYWHERE do-The bulk of health care expenses in the U.S. are squandered on correcting or marginally forestalling the inevitable cascading failures associated with these poor diet habits fostered by the machine. The SAME machine owns the insurance companies, the medical establishment, down the fucking line.

Chicago 1921-1923- New York, Boston, hell pick a city on the east coast.
The mafia invented it, gangster fucks perfected it, it continues under the guise of the Affordable (fuck you, I have my own insurance) Care Act.

If people, were not such fucking imbeciles, they'd see through the simple veil of graft and extortion these suited, elected (joke) criminals use to continue to divert attention away from the obvious criminality of their ruse.

Get me started on eating healthy and the lack of availability and inaccessibility of the healthiest of raw materials...of how staple crops have been hijacked and genetically coded with ONE goal preeminent: To increase the profits of the monopolies that control the food supply.

The fastest way to fix the problem of affordable health care, is to fix the broken habits of dumb-ass humans who allow themselves to be bent-over and ass-fucked into thinking they need insurance AT ALL!

Teach people that their diets are being being systematically and fundamentally altered to keep them in this loop and the insurance companies and the cunts who make the laws that benefit them, will collapse under the weight of their own, orchestrated illusion.

Going to the Doctor in America

Raigen says...

Just read through this whole damn thread. And damn was that tiring. It's been a while since I've spoken up about anything on ye olde 'Sift, and now seems like a good time to do so.

Hi there, I'm a Type 1 Diabetic, and completely dependant on a regular dosage of insulin via a pump. I've been Diabetic for the last 15 years (diagnosed at age 15 during March Break of Grade 9). Thirteen years ago I was put on a pump because I was taking 9 shots a day to try and manage my wildly out of control "beetus". I was on a good diet as well, with few heavy carbs, but my body has a hard time maintaining a good balance of insulin sensitivity.

Now, on to the idea that Type 1 Diabetes can be "cured" or "treated" without insulin... Bollocks. Plain and simple.

Almost two years ago I set it upon myself to get fitter and healthier. I have never been overweight, just the less-than-average amount of fat I would say, but I was bored with how things were going and decided to try something new for my fitness routines; I went 100% Paleo.

Yeah, for almost two years I have rarely (and I mean rarely) eaten anything aside from fruits (one serving a day, two if I'm deserving of it) veggies, nuts and protein. Nothing processed, as little preservatives and chemicals as I can manage (I read *a lot* of nutritional labels when shopping for new foods) and I buy most of my meat and veggies from local farms and farmer's markets.

Has this helped my Diabetes? Extremely marginally. My insulin sensitivity has increased by a fraction... But that's it. Has my pancreas started creating its own insulin? Not a chance in hell.

While doing this whole paleo eating lifestyle I've also been doing a lot of intervals and weight training, and I've made some great strides. But back to the original idea of getting back to "natural" ways of living/eating and "curing" my diabetes? Yeah, no dice there, ladies and gentlemen.

I cannot be without my pump hooked up to my body for more than two hours before I would need to be sent to the hospital. Nothing I have done, with all my dedication, determination, and strong will, has made my Diabetes any "better" than it was when I was first diagnosed. If anything, it has taken more of my time and money and energy to get where I am now, with nothing to show for it from my condition's perspective.

If anyone, anyone at all, thinks they can cure Diabetes Mellitus by eating better and taking better care of themselves I'll suggest this: remove your pancreas and see if your body builds you a new one while you're testing out your hypothesis, because in all seriousness and fairness, that's what it's like to be Type 1. My body killed my pancreas making it a useless, lifeless organ. It will *never* awaken again to produce my own insulin without the help of true science and excellent doctors.

So, you know what I've done, and can take it from me that it will not cure you of your Type 1 Diabetes. Now I want you to tell me what I'm not doing to help "cure myself".

I'm an open-minded skeptic.

... But I'm not so open-minded that my brain will fall out.

Some motivation pictures .. everything is possible !

eric3579 says...

I guess it might be motivational if looking like a roided out mass of muscle (which some of these people have become) is something you desire. It's one thing to go from overweight and unhealthy to being fit and in shape(more power to you), but I'm guessing I'll never see the appeal to want to go from being healthy and fit to what some of these people have become. I have to assume bodybuilding can get addictive like many other things in life.

900 Pound Man: Race Against Time

It's hearing stuff like this that makes me ok with the recent determination that obesity is a disease.

There's a definite line between obesity like this and simply being overweight. Lots of people are overweight, but this guy is insanely obese and apparently has no self control..his wife apparently has no self control either.

I have to admit, part of me shares Yogi's sentiment. Part of me wants to simply let people like this die. But they're going to be a massive burden on the health care system no matter which way you look at it so we might as well try to learn something from the guy. sociologically and medically, then maybe we can prevent this shit in the long term.

Obesity is our next national concern. As much as I want to blame people like the guy in the video. They don't deserve 100 percent of the blame.

Shitty food keeps getting cheaper and cheaper and healthy food keeps getting more and more expensive. We have a health care system that is designed around covering up symptoms instead of solving the root causes.

It's not impossible to live a healthy lifestyle in spite of these factors, but it certainly isn't getting easier.

There is clearly some psychological issues at play here, not just purely eating too much and not exercising.

Forks Over Knives -The Movie That Changed The Way I Eat

The only rule of thumb worth a damn that ever made complete sense to me. Eat instinctively or otherwise consciously-A rabbit, for example, eats only those foods which are beneficial to him, and he eats these whenever he desires/needs them. Rabbits for example, are rarely diabetic, overweight, or hypertensive, and their farts smell like dirt...OH, and they don't need to wipe, after....

Better yet, the artist shouldn't have known which woman was being described.

And I reckon the results would be reversed for men.

Overweight, Nah, I'm just solid.
Grey haired? Distinguished looking.
Short? Stocky.
Wears glasses? intellectual.

Frankly, the whole thing reminded me of this

Zawash said:

This wasn't double blind - the artist should have asked the exact same questions to the women regardless of whether they were described themselves or somebody else - and the women should have answered the questions in the same way.
But still - interesting.

Hey Lekroth, I suddenly remember this video called "Fresh Morning Call" which features an overweight woman spanking an overweight man, with Riperton's "Loving You" in the background. When I first saw it I thought it was hilarious. Now I'm trying to find it on the web and the only trace of it is a discarded upload to videosift. Is there any way you can post that video again?

The link to the discarded video is here: [url redacted]
