If there is a button the the steering wheel that gives an extra 100hp for overtaking by whatever method, I'm willing to call it push to pass. I expect that hitting the button would switch the engine to a high power torque mapping, use the MGU-H to spool up the turbo faster, and give a MGU-K boost exactly like last year's KERS button. I would also expect that not every team uses a steering wheel button for this function, but if Williams called it "push to pass" over the radio, I expect that they do. You could also have a separate engine mapping to do the same thing, and I expect that probably some teams do.

The RBR infringement was a bit more complicated than that. The FIA sensor was giving them inaccurate readings (it was reading high), and the FIA told them to apply an offset to the sensor values. They chose to use another method to ensure they weren't exceeding the 100kg/hr limit, and were excluded on the grounds that they had not sought permission from the FIA to do so and that it is not within their discretion to run a different fuel flow measurement method without the permission of the FIA.

I expect their appeal will be on the grounds that they did not in fact exceed the limit, and gained no advantage from their actions... and despite Christian Horner's level of confidence it could go either way. The last report I heard was that although they have lodged their intention to appeal, they have not yet actually tabled the appeal (but have a few more hours to do so).

Actually Mercedes were warned about the same issue. They chose to turn down their engines a bit to avoid the problem.

Formula one has been about getting around the rules at least since the 80s, and RBR have been very good at it. The camera mounting is very much in the category of satisfies the letter of the law, but very much goes against the spirit. I like the approach of using the camera mount as an extra wing actually (is it only the one team who did this?).

What they meant by this is to use all power available. They got 100l of fuel to go full 1½h race. The fuel flow is limited to 100l/h. That means they need to use around 67l/h on average, this of course decreases during braking and is almost at max during acceleration. Also energy recovery and the release of that energy has some leeway to be used in different ratios, it is limited to 33s per lap. How that energy is divided, is up to the team.. So they will have the full boost of 160hp from ERS and full 100l/h fuel flow when using "push to pass" button but it's nowhere near the common definition of that function. Traditional push to pass is high boost, on 2014 F1 it means few percentages of power. The correct term would be "overtake mode".

RBR infringed fuel flow rule and no other team had been even warned, FIA has guidelines that teams should calibrate with enough margins to void minor differences between sensors. RBR refused to do this and counted on FIA not counting that marginal change. FIA had stated pre-season that in no case there will be extra fuel flow allowed, it's almost zero tolerance policy.

They've done this before, made a marginal rule infringement and got away with Charlie Whitings slap on the wrist:"change it to the next race".. Their camera mountings is already one of those little things that is technically legal and at the same is not.. It all depends if the TV crews can find a suitable camera. If they say "no", the rules are clear: they need unobstructed view.. That small hole hardly allow high quality picture, the only lens that could even remotely suffice is fisheye lens with a mask: it is not their standard equipment.. RBR most likely will have to change those too (imho, so should merc camera pods and mclaren parachutes too). Compare that to Williams 360 camera pod and it's pretty clear what FIA means by "enough room to fit camera" means.

Last year they had holes on the floor in monaco: ruling was, change them to the next race.. Then there was the TC scandal, RBR used illegal engine mappings.. They used them last year too when there was a ban of feeding fuel to exhaust during zero throttle to feed the blown diffuser: RBR chuckled and used them anyway.. They still have the duct inside the nose, it violates the intention of the rule but is legal technically. Of course the severity of the punishment is a clear sign: FIA just showed that no more of that bullshit, RBR has to start respecting rules.

It doesn't take much variance in speed to cause annoyance in other drivers, if this device tells you to slow down even 5km/h (sorry I don't do miles), you're going to be breaking the flow of traffic and people *will* overtake you.

People drive up to and often slightly over the speed limit, you can say whatever you want about what people *should* be doing but it's not reality, so it's moot.

If this doesn't take other drivers in to consideration, the entire thing is pointless other than the light countdown timer, which is handy but could also cause irresponsible driving ("If I speed up now, I'm gonna make it, this thing is switching in 5 seconds!").

What else is it telling you? Start slowing down now but oh wait, 5 cars just took position in front of you...guess the distance I calculated to the traffic light just then is no longer useful, you better slow down another 10km/h, oh hell just look in front of you and slow down to meet traffic conditions.

There is also an expectation that technology works and it is entirely valid, yes people should use common sense but this doesn't excuse your product for not working, this is silly. The purpose of technology is to work so transparently, you are doing less thinking so you can focus on more important things, like sudden high impact situations that require heroic reaction times.

Anyway, I don't think this is bad tech, I think it is not particularly useful in today's environment and is just an odd stepping stone to proper smart cars. I think the gradual progression to smart cars is the fault of an uneducated public who have unfounded hate in the concept of letting go of driving to a computer.

I just want smart cars every where for everyone, so we can have safe and effective roads.

No one is going to know you're driving at slow speeds because you have information on the lights, they're just gonna be pissed off, do dangerous overtaking etc, which in turns is gonna throw your cars calculations off no?

Even when we get self-driving cars, cars have relatively large life spans, it's going to take 50-60yrs from when they even become popular to out phase older models. It doesn't feel like something you can retrofit.

It's just depressing all-around, I'm so over crappy inefficient human drivers. We're all just ticking time bombs escaping death every time we drive, oh you sneezed, dead, oh you felt slightly depressed and let your concentration slip for a second, dead etc

Yes we get away with it the vast majority of the time but the times we don't is still far too high.

With regards to "Not sure if I'd be amused or annoyed." --

High-beam flashing isn't as annoying in a truck as it is in a car. For a few reasons: you're higher so the angle doesn't hit you as much (especially if you are in a cab-over truck), you don't have a rear-view so you'll only get reflections from side views instead of being blinded by the large rearview, and also the signals are frequently used for helpful/constructive purposes between truckers.

I drove a truck for my family farm operations a bit back when I was living in the US, and it was quite common to flash the high-beams to another truck overtaking/passing you when they had enough room to get back in the lane. Pretty handy/nice thing to do since most cars want to be going faster than you and it is somewhat difficult to gauge the earliest safe time that you can merge back into the slower lane in a sideview mirror looking back at a long trailer (or trailers).

Well, to me it seemed he was just overtaking the car, there wasn't much time after he did that to indicate whether he intended to continue to rocket along like a lunatic or if he was just merely putting distance between the two of them (I often do that in a car). I believe it was made public a few decades ago that the US has had a roadmap for overtaking the middle-east for at least 3 or 4 decades. I recall hearing that around 2005 or so, but it's been so long I don't remember the source. Only that there was a specific plan that the US had laid out that was a strip of specific land across the mid-east that military strategists had basically said "we topple here, here and here, and we run the world forever", or some such equally power-mongering statement.

I'm sorry but you are simply wrong. America is rich largely because of it's slavery past which was cotton, which was textiles. It's why we grew so quickly and put ourselves in a place to overtake everyone after World War 2 when we literally had half the worlds wealth. There's plenty of economic history of this that you can research if you care to try.

The fear thing is pretty unique in America but not unique when you compare it to say a authoritarian society. Americans are a terrified people and it's easy to use it. You can look back at the first Gulf War when people were buying guys and camo and readying themselves in case Saddam came to attack the US. Which is insanity. In the Iraq War we were more terrified of Iraq than Kuwait and it's citizens were, and they had been attacked by them and were their closest neighbor. You can also see the fear today about taking peoples guns away, if we don't have guns we're all doomed, the government is coming or al qaeda is coming and we're all gonna die. Most of the rest of the world looks at us and laughs when we react all scared to nothing.

Maybe this is the only way he can get the motorist to follow the speed limit the other car seems to be doing the same speed as the Police car, and its only when the guy in the big truck overtakes and accelerates past him that you see him pull over and brake. Stupid behavior i know but after you have pulled a few people from wrecks im sure trying to keep speeders of our roads would be one of your concerns too.

So its time to use those things in cars, like in Viper. They can scout ahead and make you even able to overtake in bends!
Though, I dont think they can keep up with a car driving 60 mph, much less scout ahead of it.
