I love 84!

I had some friends into exotic cars and we'd take 84 over to the coast now and again, mostly because we had a shit-ton of money and a shit-ton of spare time to kill -- the Dot-Com fucking rocked!

There's a bend in the road just outside La Honda on the coastal side that's a 15mph hairpin with a tree at the apex. It's a lovely goddamn thing, especially when you forget it's there. So here we all come, lane-trading and exercising general assholery in cars that cost what a nice single-family home does.

Oh FUCK, the turn!!

My friend in the 911 does this beautiful trail-brake and swings through the curve. Elise follows suit, complete with smoking tires. Next up is Countach. He BARELY holds it together, but gets through without any real drama.

Now it's my turn.

Did I mention I was driving a '97 Camaro Z-28? Yeah, Camaros of that year are good at exactly one thing: driving very fast in very straight lines. Corners? Yeah, not so much. I realize I'm in trouble and I'm coming into the turn WAY too fast. I grab the shifter and get ready. My plan is that I'm going to slam it into first, let the rev limiter do its thing to save the engine, pull the e-brake and swing the tail, then punch it and swing the ass-end around and launch out of the curve with smoking Z-rated tires and all!

And HERE WE GO -- grab the shifter, yank it all the way down and...

That's when California emissions standards fucked me.

You see, when you buy a Camaro Z-28 in California, you don't actually get first gear. You get what's called a California First, which is actually SECOND gear, because if you were actually able to use FIRST gear, the goddamn car would belch enough emissions to make a farting Brontosaurus blush. And second gear ain't exactly gonna work for my little plan.

tl;dr is that I hit the no-lock brakes hard enough to get my speed down and was able to bring the ass around with the little e-brake trick. I wasn't out of the woods because I over-corrected on the way out and spun. The same God that I spite and don't believe in actually saved my ass and I didn't end up going off the road. Apparently, he loves fools and Z-28 Camaros.

I honestly had more fun in that car than the law allows: sometimes literally, like when I got clocked at 110 coming onto the straight at King City. Good times, man, good times.

As a liberal (without TDS), I would prefer Trump just stay another 4, and we get a real Democratic candidate.

The good thing about Trump is that there is so much gridlock that neither party has the ability to pass any laws. Shit just coasts along without much change.

If Democrats win now, while TDS is in full swing, any law they pass will be an ideological (non-technocratic) over-correction.

I get that he's "the democratic party's man", but FFS, take things seriously for a change. Yang, Tulsi, Bern', all better candidates by far. But since they're not obedient party dogs I guess they're unsuitable for the job...

I mean, what's the logic? Hey, people are dumb enough to vote for a narcissist, so they must also be dumb enough to vote for someone brain damaged? Are they trying to double down on last election?

I mean, his youtube campaign ad has him stumbling around for words. If that train wreck is what his own campaign put out, how bad were his other takes for them to say 'all right, this is the best we're gonna get' ?

Classic Hollywood over correction, try to fix a decades long problem with women in Hollywood by pumping out a few female centric movies as a mea culpa. Then, if the movies bomb they'll point to that as proof that nobody wants to watch female led movies.
All the while ignoring the fact that male led movies crash and burn all the damn time and nobody goes "it failed because, you know, men". And never addressing the real problems.

I really liked the 3 main games in this series, though the first version I played of the earliest ones were apparently nerfed on the PS2.

Good video too, really synthesized what seemed to be happening with the company teeter-tottering between improving the core mechanics of the squad tactics with appealing to more the quicker twitch FPS play that seems to be the industry default.

The squad tactics are what made these games fun to play, but the inaccuracy of the weapons in iron sites was infuriating. Authentic? Maybe, but I think it was a reasonable criticism and I can see how the over-correction lead to watering down of "what made the game great".

I would take that route out every time.

Turning to the right would require not only a larger change in direction from me, but also the risk of hitting oncoming traffic rather than a very slow moving/stationary vehicle or running off onto grass.

As for the over correction, that's someone driving in a very stressful situation and doing their best. Just about every car you can buy in the UK now has stability control that would have prevented that spin, and the amount of training it would take for someone to be able to reliably control a car without that stability control through a stressful and unexpected situation like that would be overly prohibitive.

The larger swerve required to go to the right of the car cutting in across the lane would have made the car a lot more unstable and a lot more likely to turn over.

Bad call to go to the right. She made the right choice, and less dangerous one and everyone walked away.

Buddy turns INTO the path of the oncoming car, then over-corrects into a spin-out. Terrific work.

I find this stuff very interesting, will be visiting that site. Something I noticed about native Spanish speakers is that when they speak English they put a slight "eh" sound at the beginning of English words that start with "st" or "sp", as no Spanish words start with those consonants. So they pronounce the word "Spanish" as "ehSpanish". Which leads to Ricky Ricardo over-correcting and trying to perfect his accent by removing the "e" sound where it actually belongs, like "(ex)splaining" and "(e)xactly".

I've had a few trial flights in an R22 (the heli in this video) and he's not kidding.

FLYING a helicopter is pretty easy, but hovering is an absolute bastard. That Pilot Induced Oscillation thing? If you want an idea of what it's like, get a plastic cup and balance it on the end of a stick, and the balance that on the palm of your hand. Then fill the cup with water. Now don't spill any.

Almost every touch you make is a complete over-correction and just makes things worse.

And the most depressing thing is when the instructor takes the controls and then levels out with seemingly no effort or thought.

Still, helicopters are great fun and if you ever get a chance to do a trial flight, go for it!

I was almost in an accident like this once. My girlfriend and I were driving through California near Modesto on a two-lane, 50 mph back-road in the dark. Our right front tire went over the line into what looked like more pavement but was actually soft, dry, desert dirt. We just barely kissed the line but it was enough to send us off the road towards a tree, my girlfriend over-corrected and brought us back on the road and into the oncoming lane. We passed through the space between two cars, went off the other side of the road, over-corrected again (because we were really just fishtailing at that point), drove back through oncoming traffic, sideways, and stopped in our original lane facing the wrong way.

I always think of that when I see car accident videos. That and the fact that we were driving an early Hyundai Accent, the kind that would've vaporized had we actually hit anything. For a few seconds there, floating in the space between two cars, my whole existence was entirely dependent on luck, or fate if you wish. It felt very weird, and a damn-sight unfair.

It's really easy to say that this guy was driving irresponsibly, or to say that one needs to respect semis, but it looks like he was going with the flow of traffic, maybe just a little faster. Those moments like this happen before you even know what's going on. Your tire brushing that little pile of melting snow can start a series of events that you have no control over. And driving slower than the rest of traffic can be just as dangerous, especially in the snow.

But I'm not trying to be preachy. The thing that really amazes me is that when people see these videos, we always tend to think of ourselves as being in the place of the driver who fucked-up. We could just as easily, however, be the other guy. Happens every day, all over the world. You're driving safely in your own lane, minding your own business, and all-of-a-sudden you're pink pate' getting spread nicely over a crispy metal cracker. Nothing you could've done. Driving is dangerous.

Not really. Not saying it wouldn't be expensive, but the technology to do this has been around for a while: a few accelerometers, a gyroscope, and lots of actuators. And someone who knows a little control system programming.

Actually, and judging by the title it is what it uses, but this can pretty much be done with a pivoting table and a large spinning gyro placed in the table. Much like a top, the spinning gyro would resist movement. There is probably something else that auto corrects the tilt for any time it is off (a gyro resist forces that try and tilt it, but if it finds a new tilt degree forcefully, it will keep it). It is really hard to tell from just seeing this video. Also if you went with the actuator route, something as simple as the actuators and an ipod alone could be used.
the most expensive part would probably still be the pool table, and the act of building the pool table mounted to the auto level device.
