ADHD U: Planned Obsolescense

RedSky says...

Of course not, but alongside iOS updates which tend to slow the phone down I think it's a very intentional 'nudge' to upgrade the phone. With iPhone/iOS being something insane like >70% of Apple's profits (I think it's higher now) they really have to keep this kind of practice up to keep sales growth chugging along.

People will usually second hand the old device if they can. The more shameless practice is with printers that will arbitrarily stop working after a programmed number of prints.

I mean I think it goes without saying that Apple has the capacity to come up with a coating that doesn't scratch. It's not just Apple of course, if you split electronics by durable and regularly replaceable you find things like appliances are more durable that gadgets.

oritteropo said:

None of those things necessarily stop the device from working, and in my experience they're pretty durable. Until recently I was using a 6 year old iPhone, and the old one is still going strong after being passed on to a family member.

I'll put a hole right through your head!

@speechless Net hasn't been interested in getting involved in a LONG time now. I have told him that Choggie isn't around any more, but that hasn't changed his mind. I think he just burned himself with arguing here or something. Personally I am happy he isn't getting upset over VS stuff any more.

I also don't think he has access to VS from work any more like he used to.

I don't sift much any more, but when I do, I nudge him towards my unsifted queue, and he's kind enough to just check it out/upvote either before going to work or at lunch. Since it bothers you, I won't ask him any more.

I doubt he wants to start sifting again, but I'll let him know he's missed.

"Some day we're going to have to nuke a comet"

No.

Nuking a comet is probably the worst thing you can do to try and divert its path. At best the nuke would shatter the comet and not divert its path, meaning instead of one huge comet intersecting the earth you now have many, many huge comets intersecting the earth.

There are alternative methods out there that will nudge a comet when it is far out, avoiding the "blow it up" mentality the laymen seems to think is prevalent.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Wage Gap

This is not as relevant as the rest of the discussion here, but an interesting addendum to the clip: the President doesn't set the salaries of White House staffers - they're set according to a schedule established by an administrative affairs body. The President has some say, though, in who gets hired to senior positions, and whether it's mostly men or women in the high-paying positions. http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2014/04/14/obama-is-nudging-the-white-house-toward-gender-pay-equity.html

Titanfall Gameplay video @ 1440p

RedSky says...

Pretty much my thoughts.

My guess is, the proprietary dedicated server they have is what's limiting the player count. That or the consoles themselves. I can't imagine ex-Infinity Ward developers would have included AI bots by design. They would have had to increase Titan cooldown to compensate with more players but that would have been an improvement in itself, as after the first few minutes, if you're any good you spend most of your time in one and the game plays like Mechwarrior. Not that that's bad, but it should be a novelty, not the norm for what is still an FPS.

Very disappointed by forced match-making as well. Now that both EA and Activision are doing it, I would hate it to become the standard even on PC. Odds are I will be playing CSS/TF2 for another 10 years it seems. Although even Valve is nudging us towards it now in TF2.

That and the huge inter-game downtime. Again, if TF2 can let you change loadouts mid-game and allow you to vote on the next map while you're in the previous one, I don't see why a game released nearly 7 years later struggles with this.

The beta featured only a selection of weapons, titans and maps. Those weren't actually three different titans, that was just the three default loadouts for one titan, the Atlas. And, there were custom loadouts even in the beta, with 5 customization slots and 3 mods for all of the primary weapons, you just had to reach a certain rank to unlock customization.

But, I was disappointed too, but mainly because it was a maximum of 12-player games, small maps, no server browser, no keyboard chat and no single-player. Honestly it gives the impression they designed it to be peer-to-peer multiplayer, then late in development switched it to dedicated servers, without actually leveraging any of the advantages of having dedicated servers.

Oh but viiiideo games don't promote violence and have NO effect on imprinting or the psyche...Yeah. Keep thinking that shit.

Wait till the suspension of disbelief regarding civilization and society slam them in the ass and watch 'em switch-on. All it will take will be a nudge-

Seal Birth at Elliott Bay Marina- Seattle, WA 7/29/13

PlayhousePals says...

Seems it survived unscathed ... I just found this:

Brian Kaloper, harbormaster at Seattle’s Elliott Bay Marina, was walking to his office on Monday morning when something caught his eye.

It was a seal on the marina’s G dock. Given that the dock is heavily traveled, Kaloper thought it was odd to see the animal there.

“When I got into my office, we turned on our security cameras to see what was going on,” he said.

Soon, Kaloper was treated to an astonishing sight. As the camera recorded, the seal gave birth to a pup, alternately laboring and taking a few breaks to rest. Immediately after the pup was born, the mother turned around and nudged its face and body, as if to make sure it was alright, then looked around the dock.

Marina staff quickly locked the door to the gate to protect the mother and baby, put up caution tape and kept the dock closed for a few hours, until the mother and newborn were back in the water. Kaloper said though marina staff are used to seeing wildlife around the facilty, the birth was astonishing to witness.

“Our staff sees plenty of seals and pups swimming about, but to catch nature in its most pure form on camera during a regular Monday was unbelievable,” he said.

Mieders Alpine Coaster - Frustrated Guy Crashes

CreamK says...

Someone should show this video to the alpine resort staff. They seriously need to up the bucket seats and revise their delay timing between units. This should never be allowed to happen in the first place. The persons were in line of sights as he took off and i'm betting that ain't the first time a pussy goes at snail speed if that's the interval.

That being said, a sincere apology were in order, i'll bet he didn't want to ram her that bad, just to give a good nudge to say: "hey, you are dangerously slow!" He did have a certain douche in him, that's for sure, maybe the reason i disliked him from the start. That screaming part, that's what i would've done but after giving the impression of "there's high speed bullet coming, gtfo" just to stop them braking at every turn.. Then would've paused and let some gap form. You have to remember that you can't pause for long or you are the one slowing down the bunch..

All three are at fault here: the resort, the idiot in the front who's delaying 4 buckets and the douche himself.

To me, P. Tampanensis tasted like walnuts with a rainbow laser aftertaste whatever that means. That's just what my tongue conveyed to me. In my experience these came on stronger, sooner with a faster peak, but with a faster fall off as well. Definitely felt like a mushroom trip. An overall great time (and at times seemingly too great to the point of wanting to turn it down a bit) for just a simple "biological specimen: not for human consumption." as the envelope it was delivered it cleared stated. Hahaha wink wink nudge wink nudge nudge wink nudge wink wink wink nudge nudge wink nudge wink nudge wink wink nudge wink nudge wink wink..wink wink nudge. If you catch my drift.
