Blonde Goes Bowling

xxovercastxx says...

There's a reason why grown adults aren't allowed to use the 6lbers.

That being said, I was a rather avid bowler in my late teens and once came close to doing something similar.

For anyone who doesn't know, you're supposed to slide a little bit on your final step as you release the ball. That's why bowling shoes are soled with suede.

In this particular case, on my final step I planted my left foot in what was probably a little spill of soda. My little slide became an abrupt stop and I flopped forward onto the floor, simultaneously launching my bowling ball (a 12lb) virtually straight up. Luckily, I didn't do any damage to either myself or the alley. The ball gently nudged one of the ceiling tiles out of place and then fell to the floor a few feet in front of me.

Also luckily, the owner knew us well enough (we were there every weekend) that he knew we weren't screwing around and that something must have happened.

Cat Hates Leash Enough To Play Dead

Xaielao says...

I've fairly successfully taught my indoor cat to take a leash. He knows if I put on his harness he gets to go outside. Not that I can like walk him like a dog but I can at least nudge him in the right directions. For the longest time he just slumped over until i thought him it was a reward.

And believe it or not my cat 'loves' going for a ride lol. He's Siamese, what do you expect. Crazy ass breed.

It burns my ass to see people hit other people's cars and carry on like nothing happened.

When I first lived in New York and I would see people nudge to parallel park I was dumbfounded! Being originally from Michigan where cars are Gods, I just couldn't grasp the idea of nudging and it being ok. A couple years later I learned that's what bumpers are for! You can nudge quite a bit before any monetary or physical damage is done. Lot's of nicks and pings in NYC cars though, I'll tell you that.

Say WHAT? They are not meant for "Braille parking".

I hope you're being sarcastic, it's not readily apparent. The bumpers on a car exist so that, in an accident, the damage to your vehicle is minimized. The "5 mph bumper" came about after consumer groups fought to have execedingly minor accidents ( < 5mph ) do virtually no damage at all, to help keep cost of ownership down. It was never meant to take the place of competent driving skills.

But not all bumpers line up height-wise with other cars' bumpers. Most aren't made of steal and are actually painted. Etc. Therefore drivers shouldn't ding other cars regardless, IMHO.

My car has some pretty nasty dings and even bad grooves cut into it from other drivers rationalizing hitting cars like that and driving off.

Jon Stewart - Fox News False Statements - TDS

kceaton1 says...

I'd have to say that The Daily Show is rebuking Fox News and PolitiFact at the same time. Fox due to the obvious and PolitiFact for correctly fact checking Jon, but not bothering to mention that if Fox is wrong on so many levels that the polls taken are essentially pointless. Their viewers are being brainwashed and a better poll to take and follow the results (and throw out the rest of the polls) is to poll on the very topics that are lies.

This is why you need to look at who is polling AND what was polled.

The Daily Show always has a retort whether they were wrong to a certain degree or not. This is what I think I see them doing here. Sort of a gentle nudge for PolitiFact.

First look at Windows 8 - very interesting

A fresh start would be good, and then use emulation or virtualisation to run the old Windows programs.

Apple has shown that this can be done. First with the move from Old Mac OS to to the completely different OS X then with the move from Power PC to Intel. Both changes required emulators to run the old programs and were then eventually discarded.

Notice that Windows 7 seems to be underneath when they run Excel. I don't like this. They should make the commitment to the new paradigm else it's going to be a dodgy compromise.

True. I guess though it must be one huge codebase to maintain compatibility across to the new version and somehow make the interface as consistent as possible. In other words they're going to fail at some of this. But it might be the price needed to move Windows on.
Idea - what if they did break compatibility? What if you had to rewrite your code? Would that be so bad? They could then provide a new security model and control their app store with an iron fist. I still think informed users would be able to install anything they like (hell it's still a Windows PC) but many users would find themselves nudged towards chargeable applications.

Both of the women have great delivery. Plenty of winking and nudging, but at least they can keep it together unlike the men. Though it was sort of cute that the guys that were laughing like school boys, then fled in embarrassment.
I actually disagree. It seemed to me like they didn't entirely "get it", even though the humor was as juvenile as it gets.

Very funny though, regardless.

Avoiding Idiots In Dublin

If You Drink and Drive you get to "Date" one of these men!

No drunk driver will ever stop to think "oh wait, prison rape."

So this ad isn't a deterrent of any sort.

Furthermore, when [in a decent civil society] is it ever acceptable to threaten a person or group with the fear of violent sexual assault by individuals stripped of their dignity, freedom & humanity?
~~~
I never liked "slippery slope" arguments but if you think this is okay, where do you draw the line for these ads?
"Don't smoke cannabis or.. SWAT teams could bust down your door without a warrant and murder beloved family pets right in front of your young children..
And you wouldn't want that to happen, riight? *Wink Nudge*"
~~~

If this doesn't set off a "completely inappropriate/tasteless" bell in your mind..
it would seem you are indeed infected by the Neo-con Ideology Virus, NCIV

..but this thing just doesn't set off any alarms with me. It's a well played scare tactic, as far as I am concerned.
