ADG Filler #59 - Sound Blaster Revisions

Fantomas says...

Wow this video brought back a lot of nostalgia.
I remember having a 2.0, 16, and an Audigy. Can't remember if I had any others, but my current system has a Zx model.

I miss the old EAX effects the cards could produce, as the modern OpenAL drivers just don't produce the same quality.

Quake Champions Quakecon 2016 Gameplay

Digitalfiend says...

Ah, I remember when QuakeWorld was released and how awesome it was playing it on my US Robotics 56k modem (or might have been a 14.4), though it wasn't until Quake 2 Rocket Arena 2 (and to a lesser extent QCTF/threewave) that I really got my FPS addiction on. I even recall the day I got my first cable modem and became one of the few LPBs on Canadian servers - this was way before the big three (id, Epic, Valve) started tweaking their netcode to "even" the playing field between HPBs/LPBs. Ah those were the days.

Even though I don't have much time for games anymore, I might have to give this a try for the sake of nostalgia.

Intertextuality: Hollywood's New Currency

artician says...

He's just giving another definition for nostalgia, and how it's being used against audiences.

That shot of Han and Chewie entering the Falcon almost ruined the film for me the first time I saw it. Still kind of does. It looks like two classic characters entering a classic setting for the first time in decades, but if you look closer it's actually a director and his crew dressed up like the Falcon, Han and Chewie, and they're all screaming at you to please love them with all your heart.

STAR TREK BEYOND Official Trailer #2 (2016)

Sylvester_Ink says...

I'm thinking you probably don't understand Star Trek. The TNG movies were no work of art, but they were still decent Star Trek movies. Now none of the Star Trek movies, not even the first 6 (with the exception of the Motion Picture, and arguably The Voyage Home) truly represent what Star Trek is with relation to their respective TV shows, as they choose to focus more on space action and conflict, but all of them stuck with the core premise that Gene Roddenberry laid out: To explore the human condition and show how mankind can better itself.
The TNG movies certainly could have done better, and while First Contact was pretty darn good (especially if you consider how it relates to the Borg "trilogy") I've come to see Generations and even Insurrection in a more forgiving light. Heck, as painful as it is to admit, even Nemesis had a lot of potential, judging by the scenes that were cut. (But that's being REALLY generous.)
However, none of the new movies come anywhere near what the old movies were. Yes, Star Trek 2009 was actually a better movie than several of the previous movies, but otherwise, all of them, even what I'm seeing in this new trailer, lack the vision laid down by Roddenberry. And also, it's very hard to appreciate a Star Trek movie that doesn't have its core points laid down in a TV show, as it really is best suited for the TV medium. Without that character and setting development, you can really only get by with nostalgia and action.

Now some of the fan works, on the other hand, seem to do their source material better justice. I avoided them for quite some time, but after hearing about some of the good ones, I've started to look into them and have been pleasantly surprised. They are certainly rough around the edges, but they do seem to stick to Roddenberry's vision a lot better. Heck, that Axanar thing looks pretty compelling, if they ever get to complete it.

This trailer is still better than all of the TNG movies put together. Yes, including First Contact.

RetroAhoy: Quake

shagen454 says...

The soundtrack for Quake is/was awesome. But, yeah - I really got into even heavier music than I was into already at the time and would listen to that while playing any number of multiplayer Quake mods.

The segment about Threewave CTF (with the grappling hook) really shot a wave of nostalgia through me. Aside from some really unique Ultima Online guild skirmishes, Threewave CTF for me takes the cake for best multiplayer experiences I've ever had ; and to lesser extents Doom 2 over dialup and WoW.

I still remember when I downloaded qtestx86 for Linux and playing it in a college's computer lab's computer with no sound card on LAN. It was on a Sunday night too. It was SO rad.

Rogue One Teaser Trailer

SDGundamX says...

Will wait and see for this one. Was disappointed by Force Awakens. Not a bad film, but flawed in a lot of ways. Hopefully they'll tone down the attempts at nostalgia-inducing scenes in this one and focus on a compelling and believable story.

Let's Compare ( Classic Pac-Man )

Phreezdryd says...

I had some nostalgia fever recently and ran across these "Let's Compare" videos a day before seeing your Pac-Man homebrew submission, so I had to post this.

Had you not seen that channel before? Between YouTube and emulators it's fun to revisit the old favourites, and the ones you may have missed. Can you guess which company I was a fan of way back when?

Almost forgot to mention I had that Pac-Man table top game they show at the end.

How Star Wars The Force Awakens Should Have Ended

The Last Audio Cassette Factory

VoodooV says...

Why?

even CD/DVD are going the way of the dodo.

I suspect when that guy shuffles off this mortal coil, so will the business. Either that when the last few people who even have a cassette player shuffle off cuz there will be nothing to play them on.

Yeah sure nostalgia has its place, but it really is just the human mind trying to fight inevitable change. So this really is just generational. Don't see anyone having nostalgia for using sticks as tools.

I mean I sorta get it. When Steam first came out I was vehemently against it. I "needed" that physical CD.

Well...I got over it. Steam rocks and digital is the way to go. The jury is in.
