Long Island Landscapers

Procrastinatron says...

Pronunciation: /ˈʃiːp(ə)l/
Noun
Derogatory

People compared to sheep in being docile, foolish, or easily led: "By the time the sheeple wake up and try to change things, it will be too late."

Origin:

1940s: blend of sheep and people

And this is, in my experience, what 90% of the world's human population is like. I would prefer it if wasn't true, because I'm lonely and I'm tired of always having to watch what I say so I don't wind up accidentally offending half the people in the room just by using a word they've never heard before (but which I think is a perfectly ordinary word). I'm tired of never being allowed to be interested in, or enthusiastic about, something that requires you to actually use your brain, and I am tired of the fact that noone I meet - not even teachers who've studied at an accredited university - seems to have even the most basic understanding of science, and for the life of them can't understand why an emotional argument holds less water than a rational one.

I'm really far from being a genius, and frankly, I am not very arrogant or pretentious. I try hard to ensure that anybody who speaks to me feels at ease, and that they feel like the things they say to me are being heard and understood. Because honestly, that's all I ever ask for - a conversation between equals. However, I am just dead fucking tired of living in a society that just seems to sink deeper and deeper into stupidity. It's as if I'm stuck in front of a great, frothing wave of stolid ignorance, and there is just no escape from it.

So, yes. Sheeple. Everywhere. There's just no getting away from them.

Blankfist Reaches Galaxy (Sift Talk Post)

Congratulations to both Dag and Lucky for fostering one of the most devisive and vindictive assholes to the highest echelon of the VidoeSift community.

As much as I actually get along with BF, the fact that someone can cause as much shit, as many sock puppet accounts, and attack as many people in this community is the absolute #1 reason why VS has become a back, back, back, back burner for me when I'm incredibly bored and looking to waste time when even TMZ, which is a repository that I find incredibly dull, has been exhausted.

I guess the 10bucks a month or whatever is now a great reason to allow users to abuse other members and the guidlines themselves, over and over and over again.

So, have fun VS.

And before anyone can jump in, yes, I'm really sure I'll be such a big deficit for this community going forward. So, save it, folks. We all come and go and noone's important to any community unless you're devoting your own time for free, or actual money. So, whatever.

Ad with secret anti-abuse message only visible to children

exactly what @ChaosEngine said...

Good idea: Make an ad that safely communicates with only kids.

Dumb idea: Try to get industry Kudos and awards with a viral video to spread the word with adults what's going on.

I guess noone ever said Ad agencies were selfless.

BTW Guns are not a huge issue here - this talking head trying to create it as an issue boggles my mind - SERIOUSLY- guns, it's a subject that does not factor into my existence, because I am not american. I never even think twice about guns, guns guns guns, leave it to these guys to dredge up a non issue to try an americanize us. guess what? i walk around all over the place in canada without ANY fear of guns. don't think about them, don't fear them. noone fucking has handguns, not afraid of rifles on dark streets, noone shooting up the place. i find the level of violence in canada VERY ACCEPTABLE where we are a human civilization, humans enter into conflict, shit happens. most people here die in hospital of old age so don't think that your gun debate has anything to do with canada, it's a non issue, and you thinking that we're talking about it ILLUSTRATES YOUR UTTER DETACHMENT FROM REALITY.

VP Joe Biden: Drug-Addled Moron interviewed by creature

chingalera says...

Hmm. Stupid comments and ignorance.

Ok try this: When, with approval of the current administration in collusion with all parties interested and motivated to disarm anyone who they deem unfit or unauthorized I am broadcast an inane, retarded, insulting, dishonest, video propaganda piece complete with a minlktoast, pencil-necked freak speaking for "THE CHILDREN" and a drunk-at-noon VP with a track record of bullshit longer than a freight train, my common-sense and fundamental understanding of the nature of human beings kicks-in, and I begin to make perfect sense to similar beings and sound like a raving sociopath to the those so programmed through imprint, conditioning, and environment.

Again, seek professional help if you are unable make the leap on your own.

Why U.S. Internet Access is Slow, Costly, and Unfair

charliem says...

Data transmission in modern worlds follows rules of contention.
ISP's typically provision their networks with 1:50 or higher contention ratios, because they know that 50 people on any normal day wont use up 1 torrent-user's typical bandwidth consumption under full saturation.

The ratios are calculated from the average access edge speeds....say avg speed is 3mbps, they could provision 50 customers to share 3mbps in the core network before they consider upgrading.

Contention....noone uses the entire networks bandwidth the entire time its available. Otherwise networking equipment and access costs would be 50 times greater!!

Its just not efficient to plan for everyone to saturate everyones links at the same time and not have a bottleneck....because 99% of the rest of the time, noones using shit on average. What a waste of power, space, equipment, service fees, support contracts, engineers to maintain the equipment / network etc..etc...etc...

Help a petition to get Susan Crawford appointed FCC Chairman (Politics Talk Post)

charliem says...

Similar issue in Australia, only the single entity that owned every copper cable in the country (was post master general, then renamed to telecom, then sold off privately as Telstra), owns all of the major TV rights for cable shows (discovery, nat geo etc...), still owns all of the copper lines, and the telephone exchanges, and the pits/ducts....

They have a wholesale side of the company where they are forced by law to allow other service providers access to the infrastructure to sell services on via unbundled local loop (ULL) or line sharing services (LSS).

LSS services are basically telstra renting out everything to the service provider at cost, and a small premium. So they take all the profits, and make it neigh impossible for anyone else to compete with other providers.

ULL services are telstra giving access to just the copper pairs, service providers come in with their own equipment in the headend. The other providers still must pay rent, and line rental fees to telstra.

Imagine then, how these other companies can compete at a retail service level, against the company that owns all the lines?

They can set their prices as high as the competition regulator will allow them (which in a vast majority of the access undertaking costs, is FAR above what it actually costs telstra themselves), and then sell those same services to its retail arm for less than they charge their competition....they can price match and reap way more profits, or undercut them and drive the competition out of the market!!

Competition came in the 90's in the form of an HFC rollout by Optus, but every street Optus went down with HFC, Telstra followed them, the very next week, making their rollout far less lucrative (ie. not commercially viable).

The practice was ruled anti-competitve and telstra got fined heavily for it. Doesnt matter, it stopped anyone else from wanting to roll out an HFC network ever since.

Recently it has come to a head, Telstra have been forced to vertically seperate their wholesale and retail arms, the prices they set have been capped lower on the wholesale side, they cant over-quote competitors for access over what they provide their own retail arm....but thats not enough.

Noone can run out fibre, cause telstra own all the pits and pipes.

So...the government has stepped in, in the past 4 years or so, created a government owned company called NBNco (National Broadband Network Company), to buy up all the copper lines, rip them out, and roll out fibre to 93% of homes using GPON FTTH technology.

The opposition (who will likely win the coming election) wants to tear this apart. The very same people who set up the rules and regulations and sold off telstra into private hands, and made this mess in the first place, wants to go back on relying on private industry to upgrade this - a critical service infrastructure - which has already shown to be a COMPLETE failure in the past.

I hope that whoever wins, this NBN stays....wholesale competition has never ever worked for national infrastructure. Never, in any country.

VICE: Gun Crazy USA

I read what you said and next time you want to respond actually read what I said. Noone is scared. It's an excuse to kill people. Noone is afraid. It's another reason to use our toys. No one is scared you ignoramus so please, read what I said.

You are a fucking moron and noone is scared. There I put a tl:dr for your dumbass. Read that you kool aid idiot.

Yogi said:

Ok obviously you got None of what I said. I'm talking about the US public, and yes they are scared and it's easy to scare them. All you have to do is tell them that Iraq is minutes from a nuclear weapon, doesn't matter if it's true, a HUGE percentage of Americans believe it regardless of any facts. Throughout history the US public has been whipped up into a horrible frenzy about the stupidest things to fear. When Reagan was president we were scared of Libyan hitmen were all over DC and he was standing tall...do you remember Back to the Future and the Libyans that attack Doc...that's what that was about!

Also I was pointing out that there's nothing to be scared of, I for instance am not scared of Iran. Because I have a brain, I can look at things rationally and I'm not a reactionary idiot.

So next time you want to respond, please maybe read what I posted instead of trying to sound like a tough guy.

Bill Nye: Creationism Is Just Wrong!

BicycleRepairMan says...

@shinyblurry Radiometric data is based on uniformitarian assumptions.

Also vice versa. Which might sound circular, but isnt. Uniformitarianism is of course the simplest assumtion (occams razor) but it also correlates well with the available evidence. If natural laws acted differently in the past, we would presumably find EVIDENCE that it did. And correlating data is not a "hall of mirrors, it is evidence of correlation. This is basic statistics and empiri.

Suppose you didnt know anything about humans, and you wanted to know how long they lived in earth years. Now suppose you had a sample of 3:

Person 1: 3 years old
Person 2: 43 years old
Person 3: 81 years old.

Now, from this very limited dataset, Your conclusions about the human race would almost certainly be wrong. From the mean of 42,3 there is a standard deviation of 39, which means that you'd assume that only 68% would be less than 80 years old. You'd reckon that 95% would be less than 140 years old etc.
In other words: Pretty useless.

But if you had the age of, say, 10000 random people, things would start to look very different. From such a dataset, you could see that there would be a very steep drop-off rate above 80, with noone above 110 or so, and so you could start making qualified guesses, in fact, they would no longer be guesses, but conclusions based on data.

And this is where we are with fossils and dating. We dont just make wild guesses on the basis of 2 or 3 fossils and one shitty chemistry experiment involving half-lives; We have literally thousands of datapoints. If this is a hall of mirrors, then Satan is truly one crafty bastard making a pretty impressive one for us.
