Bill Nye: Creationism Is Just Wrong!

BicycleRepairMan says...

@shinyblurry Radiometric data is based on uniformitarian assumptions.

Also vice versa. Which might sound circular, but isnt. Uniformitarianism is of course the simplest assumtion (occams razor) but it also correlates well with the available evidence. If natural laws acted differently in the past, we would presumably find EVIDENCE that it did. And correlating data is not a "hall of mirrors, it is evidence of correlation. This is basic statistics and empiri.

Suppose you didnt know anything about humans, and you wanted to know how long they lived in earth years. Now suppose you had a sample of 3:

Person 1: 3 years old
Person 2: 43 years old
Person 3: 81 years old.

Now, from this very limited dataset, Your conclusions about the human race would almost certainly be wrong. From the mean of 42,3 there is a standard deviation of 39, which means that you'd assume that only 68% would be less than 80 years old. You'd reckon that 95% would be less than 140 years old etc.
In other words: Pretty useless.

But if you had the age of, say, 10000 random people, things would start to look very different. From such a dataset, you could see that there would be a very steep drop-off rate above 80, with noone above 110 or so, and so you could start making qualified guesses, in fact, they would no longer be guesses, but conclusions based on data.

And this is where we are with fossils and dating. We dont just make wild guesses on the basis of 2 or 3 fossils and one shitty chemistry experiment involving half-lives; We have literally thousands of datapoints. If this is a hall of mirrors, then Satan is truly one crafty bastard making a pretty impressive one for us.

Honest Rep Turzai: Voter ID Will Allow Romney to Win Pa.

volumptuous says...

Again, complete horseshit.

Noone has to have a photo ID to live in this country. Show me the law where this is true. You do have to have a social security card, and that's the only requirement to being a US citizen.

Millions and millions of people in this country can barely afford to pay their bills, and while $20 may seem like nothing to you, it is to millions and millions of people. Many who are disabled and many who are senior citizens. So I guess you just hate disabled people and seniors. Nice. (oh, and poor people. And poor, disabled senior citizens.)

>> ^bobknight33:

Please the next time you pollute the air with your garbage - Don't.
An ID is something everyone has to have in today society. If you cant afford the $20 bucks for an ID then you have bigger issues in you life than voting.

>> ^volumptuous:
Winger doesn't know what a poll tax is and why it was already deemed unconstitutional by the US Supreme Court.
Dude, seriously, you need to educate yourself. You drive yourself crazy over things that are entirely made up, or dead concepts killed over 100 years ago for very good reasons. I'd personally be embarassed if I were you, and would probably start shutting my mouth until I took some rudimentary political science and political history classes.>> ^bobknight33:
Voter Id should be mandatory because it matters. If some one really desires to vote they will get the id, which they most likely already own.

Oh the fun of the internet-- Thank you Al Gore for this great invention.

I hope you're joking. He didn't invent the Internet.

He only helped push the Internet (aka super information highway he kept using). He did NOT invent it.

What makes America the greatest country in the world?

And imagine our Gross National Product if we STOPPED tossing money at these other nations.America need Noone in the end.
But,I dream. America was an interesting experiment:give common people the Vote and they'll vote for the happiest Fiction they are shown, and soon our politicians will just do away with that illusion of choice and bring us into the new Corporate Feudalism where we'll be serfs enthralled to the yokes of global conglomerates.

I agree with the corporate feudalism.. With dubya the republicans already rediscovered medieval European monarchy.

As for tossing money at other nations though, 50c in the dollar is tossed in the form of explosives and shrapnel. It doesn't make friends. And that's why there is such a need for security, and THAT's why control is being lost to fear at the political level. (nothing demented right wingers like more than a red alert situation).

It's never too late to stop killing people. Eventually, they will stop trying to kill you. Then you save half your money!

What makes America the greatest country in the world?

TheDreamingDragon says...

I would call America the Greatest, but I judge Greatest by different criteria.

Resources, and the management of them, basicly. How self sufficient a country can be if the raw materials the land posesses were properly utilized. We have farmland, oil metal and other harvestable materials ,industry and tecnology ,and the space for a huge population. If our corporate masters had an interest in it,we could provide ourselves the highest standard of living for all citizens if these phenomenal potentials were focused to that end. What other country commands such wealth of assets? And imagine our Gross National Product if we STOPPED tossing money at these other nations.America need Noone in the end.

But,I dream. America was an interesting experiment:give common people the Vote and they'll vote for the happiest Fiction they are shown, and soon our politicians will just do away with that illusion of choice and bring us into the new Corporate Feudalism where we'll be serfs enthralled to the yokes of global conglomerates.

Things Every Person Should Know About Astronomy #1

No.
That was facts. As far as I could make out, every one of these claims are well-documented with mountains of evidence and hard science to back them up.

We have no idea how many planets there are in the galaxy. We haven't discovered enough of them to determine any sort of pattern. So claiming that we "know" there are 1.6 planets per star is indeed speculation. Similarily, suggesting that "The Big Bang did not need a cause" is speculation. We don't have nearly enough information about how it happened, or under what conditions it happened to be able to do anything more than theorize at this point.
There are other examples, but I'm too lazy to go through them all. Claiming certainty about things for which we have insufficient evidence to make such claims is poor science.

He doesnt say "we know there are 1.6 planets" he specifically says "an ESTIMATED 1.6 planets" so its an estimate based on the available evidence, which is that we've discovered 770 and counting planets, and we know that its currently very hard to detect planets, yet we find lots. From this we can extrapolate, and the 1.6 ratio is probably at the low end of an estimate.

I wont pretend to understand how the big bang didnt need a cause, but the lawrence Krauss talk I linked to explains this in some detail. Notice that he does NOT say "the big bang didnt HAVE a cause", he says it didnt NEED one. In other words, physicists have worked out ways the big bang could have happened without a cause. That doesnt nescessarily mean that it didnt actually have a cause. Its like saying "Cats dont need owners" It doesnt mean that noone owns a cat.
