Timing Belt - the Forgotten Belt

We just bought a 2 year old Kia Grand Carnival (the Sedona in America), replacing our old 2002 Carnival that had it's engine die after a tiny bloody plastic T joint snapped causing the radiator water to spew onto the road instead of around the engine to cool it. This resulted in an engine that overheated very quickly and a system that was de-pressurised, and apparently not really able to be re-pressurised (don't tell me it could, I don't want to know that it was actually a cheap fix when we're told the engine was cactus... don't want to know we needlessly just paid out a chunk of money on a new car that we didn't need to).
Aaaanyway.
When I was looking into whether the engines in the new Carnivals are any good (apparently they are, Hyundai Lambda engines made in the US of A), I noticed they made a big deal on the wikipedia page about it having a timing CHAIN rather than belt, and wondered why this was a big thing.
Now I know <img class="smiley" src="http://cdn.videosift.com/cdm/emoticon/tongue.gif">

Here is me, NOT telling you it was a cheap fix, even if the engine seized from overheating after you ignored the "check engine" warning light. I also won't tell you that if it didn't come to a screeching, banging, violent halt, you probably could have "nursed" it home/to mechanic by waiting until it cooled down.
No sir, I REFUSE to tell you any of that.
I will tell you that if the reason it couldn't be pressurized was "a warped cylinder head" then ya, the engine is boned, but I'll avoid saying it would be about $2500 for a motor out of a auto wrecker (junk yard, used parts lot, etc) or even around $300 for a new cylinder head.

Well that's good to know (sort of). My wife was driving it at the time, and the check engine didn't come on, but it did come to a screeching, banging halt, with steam pouring out of the engine bay. To get an engine from one of these old ones rebuilt is around $4K (Australian), and that's about all the 2002 carnival is worth now, no-one wants to touch them. There's no point getting a 2nd hand engine from anywhere as there's not many to begin with, and they're just not reliable enough to spend the money on anyway.

So it was either a scrap yard for $500, or a trade in for $600. We had to be able to drive it in. Limped it in (still no check engine light on), handed it over, bid them good luck with it. We had told them the engine had blown up, but they were 'well, if you can drive it in, we'll give you $600 for it'. So it's not like we lied to them about the condition of the car. They'll scrap it for parts anyway.

All due respect but I take offense to you bringing race into this.

1). You don't know this guy's race, so to start, you are off base.
2). I don't understand how you think white people don't understand authority. I've never seen a get out of jail free card. That assumption is a generalization and is therefor again off base.
3). I know and respect border officials and know how to respond when they ask their questions. It has NOTHING to do with race. It has to do with respect of authority. Something this guy let slip and boom, he's detained. As expected as anyone of any ethnicity would be detained.

I (as a white guy) have never expected a free ride because of race and as such always respond or act in the required manner expected of myself as needed. Respect gets respect.

You are right - "He doesn't understand this situation at all"
But this is NOT a Minorities Game. This is an Authority Game. plain and simple.
Throwing derogatory race comments around isn't necessary.

Thank you for your consideration.
(Again, all due respect, I'm not trying to start something - just pointing out that calling out race is off-base and may be called racist in itself)

WHITE PEOPLE ARE SOOOOOOOOOO FUNNY!!!! LOL He doesn't understand this situation at all!! LOL!
Authority figures don't want back talk or any type of attitude from you. Why? Because they are being fair. I know that sounds fucked up but hear me out. The ironic part about being fair is that in order to treat everyone equally, including illegal immigrants and smugglers, they have to be tough to EVERYONE so that they wouldn't be accused of being bias or be accused of racial profiling. So more crimes & illegal activities going on around the border, the tougher they have to treat regular innocent citizens. So look at it from a socio-economic perspective rather than just one isolated encounter. And be happy that everyone is now being treated equally. Yay.
The bottom line is that the officer is being fair, and the man IS resisting the officer. The funny part is that he thinks he's totally clean, and expects a special 'White Canadian' treatment, which he is denied. And he's raising a fuss over it because he just found out that he isn't SPECIAL anymore.
Minorities know all too well how this game goes, and I just find it fascinating how this Canadian couple (assumed Caucasian) just can't grasp the concept that he was defying the officer's orders just now, and has no fear of resisting an authority figure. This is such a fundamental difference in culture because every minority in North America would have been familiar with this drill before. Ready your papers, yes sir, no sir, show that you cooperate with the authorities, and be on your way. Also, most minorities are familiar with the repercussions of disobeying an authority figure, and would like more than anything to avoid that situation as the laws aren't so gentle and understanding when it comes to minorities. So minorities know exactly what to do in this situation.
However,(assumed non-minority) Canadian man thinks such treatment unto him is unfair and protests, demanding that the officer answer HIS questions instead of he answering the officer's questions. He sees the officer as his equal, and has no problem challenging him incessantly. I assume that he has never been treated this way before in his life, being treated just like the rest of the minorities have been for centuries. I just find this HILARIOUS. This just goes to show how divided our country really is, and how ironic to see that what is considered as normal practice to minorities, is deemed absolutely unacceptable to a white guy. Welcome to the life of minorities, friend!
Well perhaps he could take solace in the fact that everyone else being treated equally the same way in no regards to their race or ethnic country of origin. He should be happy this has happened to him (sarcasm!) Equality Achieved!

Authority figures don't want back talk or any type of attitude from you. Why? Because being angry or having an attitude can incite to violence. This man obviously cannot control his temper. That's why they pulled him off the side in the first place. But secondly and most importantly, because the cops are being fair. I know that sounds fucked up but hear me out. The ironic part about being fair is that in order to treat everyone equally, including illegal immigrants and smugglers, they have to be tough to EVERYONE so that they wouldn't be accused of being bias or be accused of racial profiling. In Conclusion, this is Irony to the HIGHEST degree. The Canadian man in the video is being a hardcore ethnocentric asshole without him realizing it. The Officer is treating the Canadian couple the same way he/she would with any suspicious person or a minority. The Canadian man thinks he shouldn't be seen as a suspicious person. He is demanding a special treatment because he's not from Iraq and that being Canadian should allow him Special Privilege. He also admits he's not going to obey orders he doesn't agree? Huh? How is that his choice? Well perhaps he could take solace in the fact that everyone else being treated equally the same way in no regards to their race or ethnic country of origin. He should be happy this has happened to him (sarcasm!) Equality Achieved!

Can fake chicken feed the world?

EvilDeathBee says...

Once, meeting some friends in Melbourne city one night, they'd stopped off at a place called Lord of the Fries and gotten some "chick'n" nuggets. And they swore blind that it was real chicken no matter how much I tried to convince them that Lord of the Fries is 100% vegetarian. Mind you they were drunk.

I had one of their "burgers" before noticing the big sign saying there vegetarian. No sir, I don't like it. Good chips and fantastic sauces, though. Had an limited time "Obama Sauce" which was jalapeno, ketchup and pineapple. Was awesome!

Ron Paul Recites Revisionist History Before Confederate Flag

longde says...

It seems the evidence pointing to Paul's support for racists is piling up. This video is not quite the smoking gun of Paul hosting a lynching party, but is one step closer.

I guess just like Paul is denying the real reason for the Civil War, his acolytes will deny the real reason for the modern displays of the "stars and bars" flag.

Can't be racism. No sir, no white supremacy here. What're you talking about? We're all for states rights is all.....

Walmart Manager Denies Xmas Eve Shoppers

jmd says...

@target here, never really kicked people out early ever, and we are pretty much held until closing prep is completed before we actually leave so on holidays, we often end up going over scheduled time.

That said, walmart is notorious for having the most outlandish and rude guest and chances are this shift manager has had issues in the past closing on Xmas eve. Also the store manager may have given the OK to bypass some of the store closing routines (Like there are any in a 24 hour walmart) and wanted to get their employees out shortly after closing and so agreed to the modified closing procedures.

Again, keep in mind that 24 hour walmarts don't normally have a closing procedure.

This is a choice of the store manager, for the safety and or well being of the employees, he has stopped allowing guest in a few minutes early. You, have no say in this. You are free to complain to corporate, and the manager is probably sorry he had to go to this lengths to clear the store by 8, but you have no say in this. And if you complain like this at my store, I will have security escort you from the premise.

Frankly I found it pretty sad the people who come in on Xmas eve, no mam we are out of powdered sugar. No sir, no more turkey pans. I am sorry, we haven't had leapsters in stock for 2 weeks!

The after holiday clearance is even better.. No mam, we will NOT be getting any more of those tree bags that we clearenced to %50.

I didn't need any more reasons to hate cops. They are nothing but militarized, above-the-law goons nowadays. They are under-trained, shoot/tase/spray-first, hyper-testosteroned thugs whose primary purpose is to raise revenue for the city/county/state they work for. Police forces everywhere are rife with power-trip blowhards who simply can't function without a daily dose of "yes sir", "no sir", "anything you say sir". People who desire to become cops are often the very people who shouldn't be allowed to become cops because their reasons have little to do with "public service", and more to do with desiring power and longing for the respect they couldn't earn as a civilian.
Remember when a college degree was required to become a cop? They'll take anybody nowadays, as long as they can write tickets. They are nothing but paid witnesses, and absolutely worthless when it comes to "protect and serve".
O'Donnell is spot on.

messenger says...

Some police forces now do extensive psychological profiling before hiring to eliminate exactly this kind of person. The problem is that almost everyone starts out normal, but after a few years on the job, they see the world differently. They become psychologically damaged by the job. They divide the world into "Police" and "others", and cease to see people as people, but as criminals. This division creates all sorts of hostility and misunderstanding, which combined with their incredible legal powers, results again and again in what you see here. If police could just admit that it's a severely traumatic job psychologically and accept help, the world would be a much better place.>> ^Fletch:

"like a boss"? "not a single fuck was given"? Come on, those trickle-down net colloquialisms don't even apply.

You look at the security guards face at 0:54, and you tell me if he gives a fuck.
no, no sir, he does not.

Well it's obviously "Giving a fuck - like a boss". Because Yes he is doing what he's doing like a boss. But no, he is indeed giving at least one fuck otherwise he would just stand there and let the banana have his fuck all the way - like a banana.
