Making Solid State Drives For Your Computer

What is the single best thing we can do for our health?

rottenseed says...

At first I didn't like sitting on those exercise balls. Especially because when I first tried it I was studying. I felt the fact that I was sitting on a ball distracted me too much. Fast forward a few months later...we hire a new employee. He brings his big exercise ball in to sit on. I mock him for some time (I've known him for years), but when he needs computer help, I have to sit on it to work at his desk. I love it now. That's right...I love another mans balls.>> ^JiggaJonson:

Love the deftly sarcastic rhetoric here.
I wonder if it still counts if people sit on balls...
Not THOSE kinds of balls you perverts!!!
"But Jigga, you're the one who posted the link?!" -Random sifter
"Shut up bitch!" SLAP
Now as I was saying, ahem, I sit on a ball at least once a day for as long as I can stand it. Stability balls are a great way for me to get a little something out of sitting as often as I do. Basically the way it works is you're constantly being thrown slightly off balance. That imbalance forces you to use muscles in your abs and butt that would normally be doing nothing.
I know it's not largely significant (a 2008 study showed it only increased calories burned by about 6%, comparable to standing) but while sitting on the ball I frequently try to lean back to lounge the way I would in a chair and my body is consistently surprised that I jsut tricked it into doing a sit-up of sorts (although sometimes the body rebels and I fall off) :-).
Still no 6-pack, but every little bit helps.

TRMS: Bernie Sanders on Tax Cut Absurdity

peggedbea says...

i was talking today with a small business owner. his net work is around $15 million today. he started his business in the late 70's when taxes were much higher. this was his point, when taxes were around 50% he had the option of either giving 50% of his profits to the government OR spending that revenue to hire new employees or buy new equipment. he would always choose to spend extra money to lessen his tax burden and this is what drives the economy. it's unfathomable to a man who has run his own small business for 30 something years to set the tax burden so low that it is cheaper to just pay the taxes than it is to reinvest in the company. i'm sure most of you have already considered this point, but i hadn't thought about it until he brought it up. it seems 15% more absurd to me now ... the logic that corporate taxes kill jobs. giving corporations reasons to spend more money, hire more people, buy more equipment seems to be what helps an economy to thrive.

of course i guess one justification is that if taxes go too high, companies will just relocate to developing countries where everything is cheaper. moving to china was never an option to this man so we never discussed that side of the story.

The Unemployment Game Show: Are You *Really* Unemployed?

What about those of us who have been on twelve interviews since graduating, and refuse to take a fucking retail job making minimum wage, yet because Obama doesn't give fuck all about the economy, and is therefore doing NOTHING about it, companies will not hire you without years and years of experience, even if you have a bachelor's since it's just too big of a financial risk to invest in new employees, and, thus, we're motherfucking screwed. How about us, huh?
Thank you for wasting billions upon billions of the dollars we haven't even printed yet, Bush and Obama. How swell of you to think of the big picture.

I'm just going to go out on a limb here but is your "bachelor degree" simply a passing grade? I apologise if it's not but otherwise please be aware there is actually a difference between getting a degree and getting a degree that actually shows you have the the relevant level of experience.

Also what Nithern and longde said. Life's tough when people stop holding your hand, you're not the first graduate who *gasp* has to take more than 12 interviews. You're also not the first graduate to find themselves with only retail jobs available, please get off your high horse, you're not God's gift to the employment world.

Companies WILL hire any candidate they see a FUTURE in, I suspect if your attitude comes off as it does in this comment, it is no wonder you don't scream "employ me".

The Unemployment Game Show: Are You *Really* Unemployed?

Your problem has been around for decades. We have all had to compete upon graduation in a market full of experienced people. I would suggest going to grad school and getting a masters. Or even offering to work for a reduced amount or for free as a probationary measure. A friend of mine's son, recently graduated with a BS in engineering, did just that and it worked. He negotiated to come on as a contractor at $1000 a month; 3 months later they raised his salary. He will probably get taken on as a full worker; but even if they let him go, he has gained some valuable experience.

However, on the contrary, many companies are laying off workers who have years of experience in favor of less expensive new graduates. So, people on the other side of your situation are feeling the same pressures but in a different direction.

Lastly, what's wrong with getting a low paying retail job until you start your career? I worked as a waiter for a few months after I graduated (with a BS in physics) and was able so save some much needed money.

NOTHING?

RedSky says...

Without the fiscal stimulus there's good reason to believe the unemployment rate would have climbed even higher. That higher unemployment could have been the catalyst for another vicious cycle of further unemployment and so on. In the middle of the crisis, the current unemployment level is not the status quo, it's where it's heading if nothing is done.

Unemployment has been shown throughout history to recover slowly. This has obvious reasons, some discouraged workers simply don't re-enter or may not be able to. Employers are hesitant to hire new employees early when they're uncertain of the outlook of the economy because the cost of firing them would be high if they had to. The main point, it's simply a fact that it takes several years at the least based on prior data.

Wasteful spending? Partly subjective and partly completely ludicrous hypocrisy coming from the GOP.

Welcome, timtoner. Choggie's right, there are quite a few of us here.
