Serious Motorcycle Fail

ChaosEngine says...

Aww, I didn't realise.

I don't own a motorbike, but I do have a chainsaw and a mountain bike which could be combined into some kind of powered two wheeled transport. Can I still say mean things on the web?

I also own a motorbike, which apparently gives me all kinds of licence to say unkind things about strangers on the internet.

Jesus, that mountain bike ride near the very end (through the rocks) was terrifying. Kudos!

If you look at radx's link, you see the full downhill. He wiped out on the "easy" part but got back on his bike and came in 2nd by 1/2 a second. That's how much faster he was going than anyone else.

The Invisible Bicycle Helmet (Some thought it can't be done)

bovan says...

I always use my bicycle on the sidewalk or separate bicycle roads, my average speed is 16 km/h (10 mph), I always look for immediate and potential dangers and slow down near kids and animals as well as turn down the volume on my music when I need to dedicate more attention, I never cross a road unless I have eye contact with the approaching driver, and I have never in my 30+ year life been close to landing with any parts of my body above my knee (since all the crashes I have ever had have been low-speed while trying to break on gravel). (Also my mileage on bicycle since April when the snow disappeared is ~900km.)

Maybe this will come back to haunt me one day, but I'm so surprised that people need bicycle helmets for most of the slow speed bycycling they do when what they need is actually a brain, since everyone I know that has been involved in serious bicycle crashes have been stupid, reckless or just crazy.
Of course if you have to use the roads and live in France, then please do wear one..

Pay attention to the car thats coming instead of cutting. Tap the break a bit instead of going full speed down a hill. Slow down (and show some respect) for your fellow humans and animals.
Avoiding an accident alltogether is always better than being in one with a crappy helmet.

I use a helmet when I go snowboarding and mountain biking though, but it's not a bicycle helmet.

They are very cool, but they cost about $600 each at the moment.

Also, you don't necessarily use your bike helmet when you crash. I go over the bars on my mountain bike like the last dummy clip about 3 - 4 times a year. I have only landed on my helmet once in the past 5 years...

Some of those tight, steep corners might be tricky, but I think you're right - for a downhiller this course would be pretty easy, just a bit rough on the body..

I think it's more to do with the locales history.

Terrifying mountain bike ride along cliffside

I've walked a lot of trails like that.. but I can't imagine biking it. I mean, I didn't see anything hard about the ride and the path's pretty clean. You could do the trail without doing anything physically hard, and without any real mountain bike experience.

But I think you also die or get seriously injured about 1/200 times you try that. I've biked a fair bit, and sometimes stuff happens just going down a road. You misjudge something and catch your arm on a rear-view mirror. Oops, that meant I swerved out a bit while I got my balance.

On this trail, you don't have that margin for error. Whoops, my pedal caught on a rock (on the left side) at an awkward time while I was looking up and I swerved out a bit. Then I died. And the "death by falling" section isn't just a little ways where you can be extra careful. You'd have to have that level of vigilance for a long period.

I mean, lots of activities have risks - but this trail, on a bike, is way above my threshold. This is doubly the case because you could get most of the fun (it is nice scenery) by walking. If I'm going to mountain bike, it's going to be somewhere where the biking is the good part.

I did have to bite my tongue....

You handled this very well.

And I am feeling a bit smug about being the go-to female feminist. And glad to have such perceptive male feminist company.

God, her play by play commentary is atrocious. This needs like a Mexican soccer announcer or those guys from the Danny Hart mountain-bike racing video.
Also, FUCK your son's Wii video game, tell the dispatcher he's got a crowbar. Favorite Part: "I'm sorry I can't calm down, I've just been robbed of everything!"

Yeah, it's as if she's all, like, scared or something. You'd never think that she comments on live home-invasion video feeds for a living, would you?

Whaaaa? Come on, I was only joking. Quantummushroom is the reason you hate VideoSift.

This video and your comment make me want to buy a CCTV setup for my house so I can someday be that announcer.
