Father and Daughter Watch The Conjuring

Chairman_woo says...

I think it's mostly about adrenaline & dopamine highs . It's the same reason some people still manage to "enjoy" rollercoasters or skydiving and the like despite basically being frightened shitless by them.

All depends where your threshold for fear lies. Up to a point your physiology rewards you for what it interprets as taking a worthwhile risk, past that point it punishes you with an unpleasant response. e.g. you might get a good feeling from driving fairly fast, but if you push too far that good feeling turns to blood chilling terror.

The key is that everyone is tuned differently, some people get stressed out walking to the shops, others have to jump off buildings to get any sort of buzz. And naturally further to that we all interpret the level of risk differently in different situations. There appears to be quite the split between how people react to intense physical and cerebral stimuli.

Personally I don't really like being shit up by films like in the above, but then when I feel the back end sliding on a motorbike or drop a light aircraft into a stall I usually end up giggling like a little girl. (within reason)

As I understand it It's an evolutionary thing, we need some people who thrive on risk and go exploring and others to stay alive and raise the kids & naturally all of this is taken wildly out of context by our modern life styles. End result: some people watch scary films to feel alive and others have to race powerboats.

I'm sure there are other more emotional/metaphysical reasons too like our inherent fascinations with mortality, cruelty, paranormal etc. (and anything else we don't relate to in everyday life). But the fear "high" is definitely a big factor I think.

Rider videotapes his near-death escape

Payback says...

Motorcycles seldom kill car drivers, usually the other way 'round, but I think living with the fact someone died because they hit you is bad enough. The biker won't care any more, he's dead.

Personally, I don't see any reason for motorbikes on public streets. Litre for litre (gallon for gallon) they pollute more than a car. You can take the exhaust of any motorbike, hook it up to the intake of any modern car, and the resulting exhaust will be far less toxic than the bike alone. They are not environmentally conscious in any way beyond miles per gallon, so here's a preemptive "shut up" about that.

Bike riders fall into two categories, wannabe racers and wannabe Hell's Angels. They either get off on zigzag'ing high acceleration/deceleration or they think it makes them look badass. Anything else said is just an excuse and self-delusion.

Black Range Rover Runs Over Bikers in NYC

chingalera says...

Not condoning the dick bikers here peeps, I was assessing the best option for the Rover's crew-The shotgun blast into the air was the, "scare the mob away and make em think twice" scenario-Mind you....It's not wise to fire a long arm through the sunroof into the air, but it beats the alternative should the mob's frustration escalate into a drag-out-and-beat-me scenario.

It wouldn't have gone this way had I been driving the Rover though, I would have not been caught-up in the middle of that pack and would have already let them pass me after-having waved them on.

Best not to rile bikers-The hardcore enthusists and lifetime fans of bikes already hate the fact that most motorists drive like dumbasses and the worst of them pay NO attention to rules of the road regarding motorcycles.

I rode motorcycles off and on for years and know the pain of cycling in both Texas and California, two VERY different vibes as Californians seem to have a better handle on motoring around bikers there being so many more on the road there than in Texas hence, a better consciousness on the roadway with regard to motorbikes.

This is New York. New York is NOT an automobile-dependent state and people there (I imagine) drive like inept, first-timers on pharmaceuticals with anger-management issues.

Have to call you out on a bad read of the situation here. The bikers are entirely at fault for this incident.

Since when do Motorbike's have 4 wheels?

Also this is why I'll never own a pug. Between the snoring and the horrible screeching noises they make.

I ride both pushies and a motorbike, and I agree with @Gunter. How did he not respond to that situation? He just ploughed straight through him.

BBC 1981: F1 engine failure mechanics

oritteropo says...

In case anyone is wondering, modern F1 engines use springless pneumatic valvetrains, using Nitrogen instead of springs. It was only a few years after this video that F1 started using pneumatic actuators, I think it was the mid-80s Renaults.

Desmodromic valvetrains are sometimes used in motorbikes (Ducatti uses them for instance) but they would be too heavy for F1, and I don't even remember anyone experimenting with the idea.
