Ride Apart explains why Lane Splitting is safe and should be encouraged. Obviously this is a controversial subject and needs a bit more study. So here's some links if you're interested.

The Hurt Report was a motorcycle safety study that was very thorough. It helped pave the way for helmet laws and suggests that motorcyclists would be safer if allowed to Lane Split instead of getting rear ended and killed.
