Last week Tsipras put out a rather dejected sounding press release that I thought meant they were ready to raise the white flag, but just after that thing returned to normal

I think there are two factors at play over the primary surplus, firstly the creditors are in no mood to lend more money to help Greece's recovery, and secondly the primary surplus promised by Greece is, at least to start with, so small that any possible contraction would be more of a rounding error.

I was a little bemused to read this http://gu.com/p/49h6n/stw article on the UK's voluntary austerity. If you look at where they're spending money (tax cuts for the rich, who don't spend money) and where they're saving it (taking from the poor, who do) you have almost guaranteed an economic slowdown.

That leads to the thought that, as not all government expenditure is equal, surely a Greek government with more than usual amount of economic nous could surely come up with something.

Or, alternatively, agree to kick the can down the road for another 9 months.

I'd really like to think that the former is possible, no matter how unlikely.

Varoufakis is on stage at an IMK gig in Berlin right now. It was ~40 minutes of old news, really, at least if you've been following the developments over the last couple of months.

The interesting bit is that he's still making a clear commitment to a permanent primary surplus. For a country as devastated as Greece, that's austerity. Some argue that a 5% deficit over 5-10 years would be required to get Greece back on track, Bill Mitchell and Jamie Galbraith even make the case for running a 10% deficit to get some traction.

Since Varoufakis has to be aware that a primary surplus of any size is still contractionary, I wonder what funky accounting voodoo he has in mind to circumvent this contradiction. Just surplus recycling via the EIB? Who knows...

Edit: the ongoing panel discussion is interesting though.

Edit #2: the recording is now up again:
http://www.boeckler.de/veranstaltung_54282.htm (Varoufakis' talk begins at 12:30)

Edit #3: SPON has a piece on it this morning and one of the first comments correctly calls them out on it.

Texas cop busts a pool party picking on the black teens

JustSaying says...

'The girl was as the wrong place at the wrong time. The cop was in no mood to play around.

Once again obey, let the cop do what he needs to do and everyone moves on.'

Remember kids, if the pitbull bites your arm real hard and won't let go, he just wants to play.

Who needs de-escalation if you can be the pitbull? That's exactly the problem here, the lack of training and stench of racism.

Texas cop busts a pool party picking on the black teens

bobknight33 says...

The Facebook police statement..
"Pool Party Incident:

On June 5, 2015 at approximately 7:15 p.m., officers from the McKinney Police Department responded to a disturbance at the Craig Ranch North Community Pool. The initial call came in as a disturbance involving multiple juveniles at the location, who do not live in the area or have permission to be there, refusing to leave. McKinney Police received several additional calls related to this incident advising that juveniles were now actively fighting.

First responding officers encountered a large crowd that refused to comply with police commands. Nine additional units responded to the scene. Officers were eventually able to gain control of the situation..."

It does not say that white or blacks were fighting. Since the cop was gathering up black kids it appears that they were the uninvited guests and some broke out in fighting. The video or text does not say just that juveniles were now actively fighting. More info is needed.

The cops have to gain control of the situation, then go about finding out what occurred and who did what.

The girl was as the wrong place at the wrong time. The cop was in no mood to play around.

Once again obey, let the cop do what he needs to do and everyone moves on.

What was the result? Did they find who did the fighting?

Israeli Woman Sets Car On Fire At Gas Station

Sagemind jokingly says...

Smokers, they should all be arrested and smoking should be illegal. These are the type of people that smoke - they can't be trusted.

Or we can make the story about the fact the she's Israeli. Israeli's can't be trusted, they all want to set your car on fire once your back is turned.

I have no idea where I'm going with this, just one of those moods - it's the media I'm lampooning here.... because they need to have a scoop to sell the story. It's impossible that one person could just be loopy enough to do something stupid - there needs to be a conspiracy behind the violence.

Okay - I'm done

Sundays -- another dark sci-fi film to get a movie deal

LiquidDrift says...

Interesting, this seems to be a good strategy for successful funding - make a video that has good mood, interesting visuals and very vague gameplay/story. It's clever because the viewer has to fill in the blanks rather than the creator having to actually figure out the hard bits.

Does Appearance Determine How We Treat People?

ulysses1904 says...

Yeah you never see the out-takes on these productions. And how come we didn't get the mood-setting music when the first guy was falling? Isn't this supposed to be a clinical and objective experiment

Mess With The Cat, Get The Fangs (And Claws)

yellowc says...

You could have stopped your comment there

Everything about this video was wrong wrong wrong. If you want to own an animal and are not willing to invest the time to understand the behaviour of that animal. Firstly, you shouldn't own it but secondly, you deserve what's coming to you.

You never ever "play" with a cat with your own limbs. Not with protection on, not under the bed sheets, not as a kitten with their cute harmless teeth, never. Cats are built to kill things and they're very good at it.

This wasn't play though, this was deliberate intimidation and the cat was extremely distressed. Cats are very protective of the top of their heads, as you would rightly imagine and it tells you a lot the cat is immediately angry he goes near it.

This means they have no bond, none, so the history of this person and the cat is not good. If a cat trusts you, it would not react in this manner, it may shy away or gently tell you "I'm not in the mood for a head scratch", even to a stranger a cat is unlikely to do more than give a soft warning bite at first (they hurt but generally won't penetrate skin).

So you really shouldn't have any sympathy for this person, nothing in this video remotely suggests he has ever been kind to this cat and if it is feral, well then he's just a damn idiot.

eric3579 says...

Three Hours Of Walking In NYC As A Homosexual Man

kceaton1 says...

Sorry to say, but I have to wait too to see what this video really is. It is "homophobic" in it's own way, just by using the entire notion of "dressed like a homosexual". This reeks of someone trying to do the same thing as the women, as mentioned in posts above. But, was it a real attempt to show something or was it a parody. To me, it seemed to be a mixture of the two.

But, when they use the caption that they did at the start and the statistics at the end, they tried to make it real...so I'm really in the mood to just downvote this outright.

Yes, sorry a little overreacting. In my defense, this site does chomp off the annotations, and, for whatever reason, the YouTube links were not working when I first looked (I promise, though now I think I'm imagining things), so it was kind of a black hole for my video when I first saw it, I wasn't familiar with the site, and another site WAS ripping it off, which kinda put me in a bad mood.

Glad you liked the video, must've woken up on the wrong side of the bed.

Just for the record, the reason you couldn't post the URL is because you have only just joined videosift. It's an anti-spam measure.

Now, I'm guessing this is actually your blog, and possibly video too, since you just joined and you're using the same avatar and username as the blog writer. That's cool, I really like what you've done, and if you'd just asked me to link to your blog, I would have. There's no conspiracy here to stop you getting credit for your work, in fact, I posted it on here so that you would get more exposure.

Maybe in future don't get so defensive...
