Shattering the Chains of the Anti-Bottled Water Conglomerate

RFlagg says...

Are there efforts to take bottled water off the shelf? I know lots of people point out it is simply tap water that has been filtered. Sometimes a simple Britta like carbon filter, often a reverse osmosis filter system. Even after the expense of a RO system you would save money over the long term and can be cooking with the stuff, using it for coffee, tea... I would think that even the ones from springs have to be sent through a RO system to kill microbes. Anyhow, I don't recall ever hearing of people trying to take bottled water off the shelf.

75% of the oil is gone.
Can we study the oil plume's in the water?
No the microbes are eating them and there are no oil plumes.
How much oil is going to reach the shore?
The dispecsents have succeeded and an insignificant amount of oil reached the shore.
Can I see how much oil came to shore and got washed over by sand?.............

Zip-It Drain Tool - Not For The Faint Of Heart

HaricotVert says...

I had to use one of these the other day. It lives up to the claim, I have to give it that.

For the love of god though... if you ever need to use one of these yourself, treat it from a safety perspective like it's a power tool. Like a circular saw or something equally dangerous. Because those hooks? Yeah. They are sharper than they look, even if they're plastic. And if you were to accidentally be overzealous with yanking on the Zip It or if your grip slipped and you drew your hand across one of the barbs... congrats, you've just opened up a cut that has all kinds of lovely microbes that you just pulled from your drain pouring into it. Good luck trying to keep that from getting infected.

Just a word of warning. I agree the Zip It is retardedly effective at what it does, though.

Sea Blobs are on the Rise

id49606 says...

>> ^KnivesOut:
Oh I'm sure it will be OK. This is just the Earth's ecosystem healing itself...
By killing all life larger than a microbe.
It certainly isn't man's fault or problem!

Yeah, cause it's not like global warming doesn't happen for a few hundred years before every major and minor ice age, or something.

Sea Blobs are on the Rise

Unexpected Wedding Crasher

ForgedReality says...

Don't fool yourselves, people. Iguanas can give particularly vicious and gruesome bites. They have a serrated ridge bone in their mouths and hugely powerful jaws. Their saliva is also teeming with nasty microbes.

You're not gunna like it when it rips your skin off, and then the salmonella, necrotizing fasciitus, and other diseases crop up like some kind of nightmarish horror flick.

Just go grab that lizard off of what he is envisioning as his next meal, and your meaty flesh may become part of it.

I certainly hope they didn't eat that cake.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch

JTZ says...

As HollywoodBob said, they are washed away from streets or coastal areas. also a lot of is from the ships that traverse the Pacific ocean. Over the short 40-50 years of plastic history, all those ships that went around the Pacific ocean pretty much just dumped all the garbage they produced while traveling into the ocean, since it is a "vast" place. What people over that period failed to realize till recent;y is that the "North Pacific Subtropical Gyre" formed by all the currents around Pacific ocean have pushed all the trash into one location forming the "great garbage patch". Since the only way for these man made polymers to degrade is UV ray from the sun over a long long exposure.(No microbes can break down plastic yet) being in the water shielded most of it from UV ray making it takes even longer to photodegrade.

>> ^ravioli:
To me it's not clear how this garbage actually leaves the dumps and ends in the ocean. It's not just stuff left on the beach that's pulled by the waves. It's not just stuff thrown overboard by seamen. It must be transported and conveniently dumped in the ocean while no one is looking. Probably the cheapest way to get rid of garbage, and it's been going on a large scale for decades. Ships travel between Asia and America with marchandise on one way, and have to be filled with something on their return. I wonder if half of all the plastic bottles sent to China for recycling ever get there.

Rep. John Shimkus: God decides when the "earth will end"

imstellar28 says...

The argument is not about whether the climate is changing. the question is, did mankind (and specifically C02 emissions) cause it?

consensus has nothing to do with fact, so it really doesn't matter even if 100% of scientists believe something.

To put carbon emissions in perspective, the average human breathes approximately 15 times a minute, over the course of the day this adds up to approximately 0.9 kg of C02, so in a year each human produces 328.5 kg of C02 just in the act of breathing alone. There are just over six and a half billion humans living on earth, so by simply being alive humans produce 328.5 * 6.6 / 1000 = 2.168 billion tonnes of C02 per year.

Here are some other numbers for comparison:

Global industrial C02 emissions: 24.16 billion tonnes per year
Consumption of vegetation by animals & microbes: 220 billion tonnes per year
The ocean as part of the carbon cycle: 330 billion tonnes tonnes per year

total human impact is 2.2168 + 24.16 = 26.3768 billion tonnes, or 26.3768 / (220 + 330) = 4.7957% of total C02 emission

total animal/bacterial impact is 220 / (330 + 24.16) = 62.11% of total C02 emission

Seeing ice melt, or droughts occur may say something about climate change but it says nothing of the cause of such a change. The cause of the change is what is causing controversy, not the change itself.

>> ^raverman:
I'm truly amazed when i hear people say they don't "believe" in global warming.
You can SEE million year old ice melting in greenland.
You can SEE unpresedented 10-15 year doughts in Australia & Africa
Around the world 95% of scientists are BEGGING us to avoid disaster.
Whats not to believe? Scientists because they discredit religion?
or just 'in principle' because of a right wing prejudice against environmentalists? It's just so damn petty and closed minded.

Health warning!!! Lemon wedges in your drinks can kill you!

fullerenedream says...

Ok, so she found microorganisms that can make you sick. But in what quantities? This video doesn't say. How much of these bacteria do you have to eat before they make you sick? No mention of that either. I'd like to know how the type and quantity of microbes on lemon wedges compare with those in our home kitchens.

Even if lemon wedges do make people sick, this video is still bad. Its message is "FEAR!" But if these wedges are so bad, a more useful message would be "Bartenders should wash their hands and equipment more often."

"Man, this is the best birthday present I could have ever got."

Wow. I'm sorry. That made me very sad. I mean, a new car, a handjob from three trannies, a half drunk bottle of beer um.. just about anything....

Or the thought that there might have once been microbes that belched gas.
