Christian Bakery Denies Service to Gay Couple

shinyblurry says...

First of all, it wasn't discrimination. He didn't refuse to serve them because they are gay. He refused to make them a gay wedding cake. Little bit of a difference there. The nastiness that comes out of people when they think they have an excuse to attack Christians is the real story. Immediately after the chick-fil-a controversy you had so much vile filth posted in comments and message boards, even celebrity tweets, viciously maligning Christians. That's just fine with people, but it's not okay that a man will only bake heterosexual wedding cakes. It's a hypocritical double-standard.

>> ^Yogi:

>> ^shinyblurry:
In the name of tolerance, people are coming out of the woodwork to bash Christian businesses like Chick-fil-a on the basis of their beliefs about homosexuality being a sin. A lot of these are setups; the gay community gets wind of a Christian business who has strong convictions, and then they send someone in to get refused so they can go to the media and create a bunch of hype and drama and generate sympathy. In the end, the hatred and intolerance seems to be entirely one sided. Christians don't hate gays; Jesus died as much for them as He did for the rest of us. Christians who do hate gays are simply ignorant and wrong and they should be chastised. That doesn't mean you should indict Christianity as a whole, because true Christians recognize that we've all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.
>> ^UsesProzac:
Business has doubled since the incident? I really don't understand why religious people glorify in the hatred of others. I've seen it firsthand in extended family members and it chills me. How can Christians ignore the gospel of loving thy neighbor and judge not and all those other fancy things their prophet said in their own religious text?
@shinyblurry, how do you reconcile that hypocrisy within yourself? You're the only person I know to ask here, seeing as you called me a harlot and all that. When you judge another person and go directly against the words set down in your bible, do you immediately ask your god to forgive you or what?
Edit: I'll throw in one of my favorite quotes to further illustrate the rampant hypocrisy.
“If this is going to be a Christian nation that doesn't help the poor, either we have to pretend that Jesus was just as selfish as we are, or we've got to acknowledge that He commanded us to love the poor and serve the needy without condition and then admit that we just don't want to do it.” - Stephen Colbert

Rosa Parks was a set up as well. So would me saying right now, "So you're against Rosa Park's fight for equality you fucking racist." Either it's right or it's wrong, discrimination is wrong doesn't matter what tool you use to shine a light on it, just that it's represented fairly. Chick fil A was a situation where the president said that shit himself, that's not a set up, that's putting your face out their and people bitch slapping the shit out of you.

Jay and Silent Bob predict youtube Comments

"Predict YouTube comments..."

Oh how cute! You think commenting and online flaming started with YouTube and they predicted it back in 2001. Wait till you hear about chatrooms and message boards from the 90's - it'll blow your mind.

LOL!!! you're comparing this topic to the actual work that engineers and physicists do? That is hilarious. Yes, I'm sure the engineering world has much to thank the awesome ability of arguing on a message board over what .999... is equal to.
This has nothing to do with calculus. This has nothing to do with actual practical work. This has nothing to do with solving actual problems. This is about going onto a internet message board and browbeating others which has already happened as I predicted.
Before you start insulting the education of someone else, make sure YOU'RE not making any mistakes of YOUR own, eh?
Sorry I can't stay and "debate" with you on this truly fascinating topic. I have to go to my job tomorrow and do REAL work and solve ACTUAL problems. Sure it's not as grand and as thought-provoking as comparing .999... to 1, nor do I get to beat up on some hapless internet newb who happens to take the troll-bait. But hey, we have to get our satisfaction somehow.
>> ^bcglorf:

So enlighten me, o' wise ones. What is the point of this other than troll-bait and/or ego masturbation?
This topic is the intellectual equivalent of QM coming in here and making ad-homs about "His Earness" or waxing egocentric about why he is virtuous and true and the rest of us are all immoral entitlement whores.
You saw how quickly messenger called into question the entire sift's intelligence over Entropy's post.
This sort of thing does not lend itself well to civil discourse. Admit it, the only purpose of a topic such as this is to entice someone to come in here and to argue that .999... is not 1 so you can have a grand ole time stroking your ego and patting yourself on the back over how smart you are and how the other person is dumb.

This simple concept is one of the fundamental principles of calculus. Without it you don't have engineering, physics, or a million other things known as the modern world. It's not some obscure irrelevant math trivia only used by math geeks. It is a fundamental first year mathematics principle used by every scientist, engineer, and pharmacist in the work they do every day to make all the things you take for granted.
But yeah, just because your not educated enough to appreciate that you should rag all over it and insist it's unimportant. We should burn all the books you don't care for too, right?

Get over yourself. The video isn't supposed to start any kind of fight or internet debate. It's a simply instructive video about basic math.

If you want to be upset with anyone for starting an internet fight over something you consider unimportant blame the first poster in the thread that tried to turn it that way...

Oh, I see, it was you...

Because it truly doesn't matter to anyone other than a mathematician or a physicist.....or people who like to argue on internet message boards.

.999... either equals one, or it equals a number absurdly close to one. It just does not matter in our practical lives.

Don't get me wrong, the scientist in me loves stuff like this. But the argument just seems selfish in the perspective of larger concerns. I kinda feel the same way about the Hadron Collider. Like income inequality, there is a HUGE gap between the smartest of us, and the average citizen. I feel we should be closing that gap, instead of indulging the intellectual 1 percent.

FWIW, I was the one who sifted the Trayvon martin videos here, so at least I'm contributing to both sides. I guess I'm surprised that Sifters would be disinclined to accept a mathematical fact about a number. That's like just "disagreeing" with relativity because you can't picture it in your mind even though it's been proven to hold on all but the tiniest microscopic levels.>> ^VoodooV:
do a google search. It's been argued forever. Only thing it proves is how far we'll go to argue ridiculous things and the fucked up priorities of humanity.
we'll argue .999... for forever (or infinitely...zing!) but try and solve things like why kids like Trayvonn Martin still get senselessly shot or try and solve how we can take care all of our citizens regardless of income level. Ehh, we'll get around to it sometime.
It reveals just how truly absurd this shit is.

Your ignorant presumption that an aetheist cannot appreciate music with spiritual themes is judgemental (and baseless), and the fact that you're willing to espouse it makes you an asshole.

How are you not proving my point here with your presumption that a tiny vocal percentage represent the entire body? Do you subscribe to the hate views of the westboro lunatics? Do I judge all christians based on them? They're rhetorical questions btw, although I doubt your shield of self righteousness and delusion will allow you to consider the implications...
And instead of just enjoying some wonderful music and a great crowd reaction along with everyone else, you come trundling in with your standard shtick designed to cause arguments and controversy. Blessed be the peace makers indeed... /eyeroll

My comment was simply an expression of my surprise that atheists may actually appreciate music with spiritual or christian themes. My initial reaction was rather unfiltered..I was reacting more to the atheists on the sift and not atheists in general. You're right though, my comment essentially pigeonholed all of you inappropiately, but I do know better; I have spoken to a few moderate atheists. I have also have atheist friends. In any case, this could have spurred a much different conversation than the ones who have chosen to respond have brought to the table thus far. I was just curious as to why atheists here would support this kind of music when all I hear from them is that everything Christian or spiritual is poison and should be destroyed.

Boxer excited to go for a walk

tim wise on the word nigger-nigga

longde says...

because honestly... the only power a word, and language itself have... are the power we attribute it

That's a cop out, pure and simple. It's all well and good to post such a sentiment on a message board, but try saying that platitude in the real world to a black person after some white person has called them a nigger. I think you have more sense than that.

It's not just the word, itself. It's not that simple. It's all about the context-- the emotion, the intent, the environment in which the word is used.

White people People who use ethnic slurs against the slurs' targets in a way that could be construed at hostile or insulting are bigots or idiots. I don't mind at all people who use such offensive language because I love to see people self identify.

I don't know who offends me more. White people who use "nigger" a slur, or white people who get upset because they can't use it more freely without the social stigma.
