i feel the need to defend thinkers honor on this one.
1. he wasn't drunk
2. the comments in question were made to me after i explicitly told him what to say. it was an antisocial social experiment perpetrated by 2 insomniacs. and it was hilarious. even if we were the only ones laughing. it was our dark comedic satire at a time of high drama on the sift, calling out the absurdity of 3rd parties getting involved in personal spats. oooh... much like this post right here!!!!

Life is not like GTA 4 where you can just walk into a store and pick up a gun if you're a criminal. It's not like a Hollywood action movie where bad guys are armed to the teeth with sub machine guns, sniper rifles and atomic bombs, and the only thing that'll stop them is Bruce Willis or Mel Gibson taking up arms and shooting the living crap out of them.

There are gun restrictions in my country, where you need to register your weapon and buy ammo through specialized shops who keep track on how much you get. You need to get a hunting license and maintain it in order to legally buy and keep your weapon. You also can't have as many guns as you want, nor whatever kind you want.
Now, this is by no means necessarily the reason why the crime rate is lower here than in the states, because it's such a complicated issue that you can't just point to one single thing as the decisive factor. However, the majority of our lesser crimes (and I can imagine most of the more serious ones) are gun-free. I'm just saying that restrictive gun laws doesn't mean you simply take the weapons from law abiding citizens and hand them over to the mob, serial killers and bank heist rings.

His views are not so easily rendered in any one light. I have a fair amount of respect for him though. He went into Israel during the whole Hezbollah thing, and when he came back the "Mel Gibson hates jews" things was the top order of the day. As they transitioned to black, he muttered something to the effect of "Ya, there is a war going on and people are dying, but lets talk about Mel Gibson, that's important". It was so sarcastic that I can't convey it in text

I think Mel's response was totally fine and very much reality-based. Anyone who has ever screwed up royally could have a similar reaction when it is brought up years later and they just want to forget what they'd done.
I find his honestly angry reaction to be much more satisfying than if he were to put on a phony smile and provide the canned response his publicists authored for him.

I saw Edge of Darkness - it was good, much better than I expected.

It's weird hearing Mel say "dude". I thought he was gonna say "you pissed on my rug, man" somewhere in there... The reporter was being an ass, but Mel should have expected that question. Chances are they had some agreement before the interview to not talk about it, and the guy asked anyway.

I think Mel Gibson is a good actor/director/etc, and I would see his movies regardless of his personal life and viewpoints. Same with Tom Cruise - controversial personal beliefs but the man has talent!

The question is an obvious tabloid move. Yeah he could have had some pre-prepared auto-response to the question handy.. but that's not the Mad Max who chains people's feet to a rigged exploding car that I know.
